Portal Software Launches Convergent Wireless Product Line for Next-Generation Mobile Operators
With new products and advanced features from the Infranet® 6.1 platform, Infranet Wireless enables wireless network and content service providers to support 2.5G and 3G services
CANNES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 2001-- Portal Software, Inc. (Nasdaq:PRSF - news) today announced the initial release of its Infranet Wireless product line for customer management and billing of 2.5G and 3G wireless services. The Infranet Wireless product line includes the new release of Portal`s leading customer management and billing software, the Infranet® 6.1 platform, which now offers optional modules to support GPRS, WAP, and SMS services. The Infranet Wireless product line also encompasses new wireless voice rating, interconnect and settlement, and business intelligence products. With Infranet Wireless, mobile service providers can rapidly develop business models and price plans for a multitude of wireless voice and data services for delivery to a variety of devices.

The Infranet Wireless product line allows service providers to quickly provide convergent bills for services over mobile phones or multiple devices; price new services based on value, usage or quality of service; support pre-paid and post-paid price plans; deploy complex revenue-sharing agreements with value chain partners (settlement); develop interactive pricing models that incorporate real-time advice-of-charge; and develop branding programs.

``The complexity of emerging 2.5G and 3G technologies, combined with steep license costs and intense competition, makes it critical for convergent service providers to quickly develop business models that go far beyond flat-rate, homogeneous pricing plans,`` said Bob Vieraitis, vice president of product marketing for Portal Software. ``The Infranet Wireless product line enables service providers to roll out innovative business models for wireless voice, data, and content services in immediate response to market conditions and emerging technologies.``

``The opportunities for the delivery of wireless voice and data services over multiple devices are increasing rapidly,`` said Iain Gillott, principal and founder of iGillottResearch. ``But these opportunities also present new challenges, such as the need for service providers to develop and support new services and price plans fast enough to keep up with evolving technology, market developments, and intense competition. To succeed in today`s uncertain business environment, services providers` next generation networks and devices must be supported by next generation business platforms.``

The Infranet Wireless product line includes the Infranet 6.1 platform, which is built on a highly flexible open architecture with robust application programming interfaces (APIs) and real-time capabilities. Infranet 6.1 has new optional modules to support wireless voice, data, and content services:

Infranet GPRS Manager provides real-time, flexible functionality for services based on bytes used, quality of service, access point name (APN), and airtime. It also provides the options to authorize and authenticate subscribers based on APN and/or customer balance.
Infranet WAP Manager provides a generic authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) interface to WAP gateways. Its real-time, flexible functionality enables tracking, billing, and settlement for WAP services based on bytes used, URL visited, or airtime.
Infranet SMS Manager allows service providers to capitalize on the dramatic growth in SMS and value-added services based on SMS by providing real-time rating and billing capabilities for these services.
The Infranet Wireless line also includes robust new products with wireless capabilities that can be used alone or in conjunction with the Infranet platform:

Infranet IntegRate is a high-performance rating engine that provides call detail record/event data record (CDR/EDR) management and rating, prerating, and enrichment capabilities and performs complex, multistreamed event processing. It can be custom-configured through functional plug-in modules and a powerful, easy-to-use scripting language.
Infranet Interconnect is an intercarrier billing system that helps prevent unnecessary losses and incalculable expenses while enhancing overall operating revenue. It is capable of supporting interconnect requirements for voice, data, and content -- including GPRS, WAP, and SMS services. With single-touch CDR processing, parallel rating, and unlimited tariff and discount modules, it can support numerous network operator infrastructure models.
Infranet Analyze enables providers to extract intelligent, extended information from usage data to support pricing model, trend, and profitability research.
Infranet Simulate is a tariff simulation product that assists in quickly forecasting acceptance and profitability. It enables providers to model tariff changes and view the impact on revenue, margin, and overall profitability against their customer bases, based on actual historical usage data.
The Infranet Wireless product line is available immediately.

Portal Software and SignalSoft Team to Offer Location-Based Billing for Wireless Services
CANNES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 2001--Portal Software, Inc. (Nasdaq:PRSF - news), a leading provider of business infrastructure software for Internet, wireless, and next-generation communications services, and SignalSoft Corp. (Nasdaq:SGSF - news), the platform and applications developer of Wireless Location Services®, today announced an alliance to develop a 3G-ready customer management and billing solution to support wireless location-based services. The integrated platform will enable wireless carriers to quickly deploy and collect revenue from enhanced location services, such as mobile commerce (m-commerce) and location-sensitive billing.

Through SignalSoft`s local.info(TM) Alliance program, the companies plan to streamline information flow between Infranet Wireless, Portal Software`s new product line for customer management and billing of 2.5G and 3G wireless services, and Wireless Location Services, SignalSoft`s product suite for location-based services. The integration enables wireless carriers and their application and content partners to enhance their service offerings with location information and to bill value-chain partners and end users for value-added location information.

Location information from SignalSoft`s local.info software application is processed by Infranet® software, Portal Software`s flexible, real-time customer management and billing platform. Infranet has a powerful rating engine that supports a variety of carrier-determined billing models for location information and location-based services, including differential remittances. For example, a carrier remits to value-chain partners an amount minus the value of the location information to the partner, for mobile commerce transactions and value-based pricing to the end user for premium location-enriched services. The combined infrastructure solution is also a core element in advanced 3G services such as location-sensitive billing, where carriers charge differentiated rates based on the geographic location of the subscriber.

``Portal Software`s Infranet platform combined with SignalSoft`s local.info software application is an innovative service offering for the wireless industry, and our combined solution delivers carriers a leading-edge business infrastructure for location-based services,`` said Brian McNiff, vice president of Internet services for SignalSoft. ``Through our joint solution, our wireless customers will be able to effectively leverage the tremendous value contained in their location-aware networks.``

John Janetos, director of strategic alliances at Portal Software, stated, ``SignalSoft`s leadership in wireless location services, together with Portal Software`s convergent platform, provides wireless carriers with the premier 3G-ready location solution. Our joint solution gives carriers and content providers the ability to offer differentiated m-commerce and voice services while simultaneously adding significant new revenue streams.``

Several demonstrations of the SignalSoft/Portal Software solution, will be highlighted at this week`s 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, February 20-23 (Booths C29, Hall 2 and in Booth G26, Hall 2).

IBM and Portal Software Form Global Strategic Alliance

      CANNES, France & CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 2001--

      To deliver personalized anytime, anywhere

      e-business infrastructure solutions

      for mobile wireless service providers

IBM, a market leader in e-business infrastructure, (NYSE: IBM - news) and Portal Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRSF - news), a leading provider of customer management and billing software for wireless, broadband, Internet, and next-generation communications services, today announced a global alliance to integrate IBM`s WebSphere Everyplace Suite® with Portal`s Infranet® to create a comprehensive carrier-grade, 3G-ready infrastructure platform for wireless service providers. The companies will jointly market and sell integrated software solutions and related services to wireless service providers worldwide.

Together, they will deliver an industry-leading solution for wireless service providers seeking to recover large investments in 3G licenses. IBM`s WebSphere(1) Everyplace Suite is a functionally rich software platform designed to extend the reach of e-business applications and Internet content to the mobile Internet. Portal`s Infranet Wireless product line provides a solution that enables wireless network and content service providers to launch, manage and bill for new 2.5G and 3G services. The integration of Infranet with Tivoli Personalized Services Manager, a component of Websphere Everyplace Suite, enables this solution to deliver essential personalization functions and mobile device management. The joint solution will provide wireless carriers with a highly scalable, 3G-ready e-business infrastructure.

``Portal`s leadership in customer management and billing software for the mobile wireless market makes them an ideal alliance partner,`` said Richard Stomp, vice president of solutions and marketing for IBM`s Communications Sector. ``Wireless service providers need a feature-rich business infrastructure that will allow them to create, deploy and manage their mobile Internet services. IBM`s WebSphere Everyplace Suite and industry-specific consulting services, combined with Portal`s Infranet represent one of the most comprehensive, leading-edge wireless e-business infrastructure solution in the industry. The pre-integration of these leading solutions will mean an unprecedented time to market for our customers.``

The integrated solution will enable personalized, next-generation services capable of generating immediate revenue while accelerating deployment of new mobile wireless services. The WebSphere Everyplace Suite will enable service providers to create mobile Internet services with advanced software elements such as transcoding, message queuing, synchronization, and security in addition to core technology enablers such as a wireless gateway capable of supporting multiple networks and protocols. Portal`s industry-leading customer management and billing platform supports real-time authorization and authentication for wireless services with flexible, sophisticated rating capabilities to enable value-based pricing.

The alliance brings together two mobile wireless technology leaders. Both WebSphere Everyplace Suite and Infranet have been widely adopted among wireless service providers that have begun deployment of next-generation mobile Internet services. The alliance leverages IBM`s extensive product portfolio of carrier-grade servers and middleware in addition to IBM`s renowned industry-specific professional services. Portal Software`s experience with supporting next-generation services such as digital content and rich voice forms the foundation of the joint 3G-ready solution.

``IBM is a household name with the world`s leading wireless carriers,`` said Steve Sommer, vice president of marketing and business development at Portal Software. ``By teaming with IBM, we can take advantage of IBM`s worldwide technology and services capabilities to deliver a carrier-grade solution and give service providers the opportunity to develop new revenue streams. The strategic alliance with IBM will provide our global customer base with a comprehensive, convergent infrastructure solution that will be ready for 3G.``

IBM Global Services has formed a worldwide practice within its Business Innovation Services division to deliver world-class business solutions based on Infranet. IBM experts in Infranet will provide process innovation, software configuration, integration, training, and support to joint customers. In addition, the companies plan to extend Infranet to support IBM`s DB2(1) Universal Database, IBM`s pSeries(1) and xSeries(1) server platforms, and the IBM Application Framework(1) for e-business, comprising the WebSphere Everyplace Suite, Tivoli service enablement and service assurance solutions, and MQ Series(1) middleware.

As both companies jointly market and sell the integrated products, prospective customers will be invited to visit IBM`s Telecommunications Centers of Competency in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific that will feature the end-to-end solution.

Reliacast will demonstrate the integrated solution in its booth (#259) at the CDN Spring 2001 tradeshow in New York City, February 21- 23, 2001.

The Reliacast Solution(TM) audience management technology provides businesses with the ability to measure, manage, control, bill and scale mass audience events on the Web. John Janetos, director of strategic alliances at Portal Software, Inc., stated that the alliance is in response to market demand: ``The Internet is transitioning from a technology to a business phenomenon. The Reliacast Solution is a platform- and protocol-independent network infrastructure application that manages audiences and enables the intelligent delivery of content, streaming media and applications. The Reliacast Solution consists of the ReliaServer(TM), Net Agent(TM), Virtual Turnstile(TM) and R-Ticket(TM) software applications. These components reside in a service provider network, linking and processing event interaction from the end user to the content provider through the network. Management data is available in real time to network owners and content and service providers throughout the life of the event. Net loss in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2001 after the acquisition-related costs was $18 million or $0.11 per diluted share.

"Portal continues to close business with the market leading communications and services companies worldwide, signaling the market’s endorsement of our off-the-shelf product approach to back office systems," said John Little, founder and CEO, Portal Software. "Significant revenue from both new and existing customers shows the strength of our convergent platform and our ability to grow our business with the world’s largest companies."

"We experienced solid performance in the fourth quarter despite an uncertain market. We remain optimistic about our business and market position, but given the current macroeconomic conditions, are taking a cautious approach to managing our cost structure over the next few quarters," said Jack Acosta, chief financial officer, Portal Software. "For fiscal year 2001, Portal grew rapidly and profitably, adding 229 new customers and expanding revenue from international customers to over 40% of total revenue for the year."

During the quarter, Portal continued to demonstrate success in winning business with leading service providers across markets. America Online signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract with Portal to license the Infranet software platform to support a wide range of services. BT Ignite Content Hosting, the hosting arm of British Telecom’s international broadband and Internet Protocol (IP) data and solutions business, announced the selection of the Infranet platform for the rating and billing functionality to support its pan-European content hosting business. In the U.S., Akamai Technologies, Inc., the leading content delivery service provider, is implementing Infranet to support its portfolio of content delivery services. In China, Portal won expanded contracts with existing customers Jitong, Liaoning Telecom, and Shanghai Telecom.

This week, at the 3GSM World Congress trade show in Cannes, France, Portal announced that Vodafone UK, subsidiary of the world’s largest wireless telecommunications company Vodafone Group plc, selected Portal’s software platform to support GPRS and next-generation services for millions of subscribers. Portal also disclosed a five-year framework agreement with France Telecom, the second largest telecommunications provider in Europe, to provide the exclusive reference billing platform for all IP-based services within France Telecom and its subsidiaries worldwide, including services implemented through dial-up, broadband and wireless technologies.

Portal launched an expanded convergent wireless product portfolio at the 3GSM show, with the announcement of the initial release of the Infranet Wireless product line for 2.5G and 3G wireless services. The Infranet Wireless product line includes new modules in Infranet® 6.1 for support of GPRS, WAP, and SMS services, and also encompasses new wireless voice rating, interconnect and settlement, and business intelligence products obtained through Portal’s acquisition of SOLUTION42 in November 2000. With Portal Infranet products, mobile service providers can rapidly develop business models and price plans for a multitude of wireless voice and data services for delivery to a variety of devices.

Recently, Portal also continued to expand customers and partners in wireless markets including a contract with Deutsche Landtel to supply a converged voice and data billing platform, an alliance agreement to develop a 3G-ready customer management and billing solution to support wireless location-based services with SignalSoft Corporation, and a global strategic alliance agreement with IBM to jointly market and sell comprehensive, carrier-grade, 3G-ready infrastructure solutions and related services to wireless operators.

Portal will discuss its fourth quarter fiscal 2001 results and other financial and business information in a conference call on February 21, 2001, beginning at 2:00pm PST. A webcast of the conference call will be available to all interested parties at www.vcall.com.

      One-year performance of PRSF
Portal Software Inc. {PRSF, News, Boards} posted a profit of 4 cents a share before charges for its fourth quarter, a penny ahead of estimates. But the company`s top management describes future results as "murky."

Portal, which makes e-commerce billing and customer-relations software, lost 11 cents a share when a $24.9 million charge, related to its purchase of a European wireless software firm, is counted in its results. The company`s revenue more than doubled from the year-ago quarter to $81.1 million.

Meanwhile, its shares have about doubled to 9.75 at Wednesday`s close from a 52-week low of 4.75 late last year.

CNBC.com took some time with chief executive John Little and financial chief Jack Acosta right before Portal`s conference call. What`s next for the software maker? It`s hard to say.

CNBC.com: Let`s start with a topic that`s on the mind of most technology investors: visibility. Just how far can you see results?
Acosta: The macroeconomic environment is murky at best. The North American market may be in recession and we don`t know what the effect will be on the rest of the world.

CNBC.com: Right, but how far can you see? Into the second half, into next quarter?
Acosta: What we can see is good fundamental demand, especially for the wireless business. The government can`t do it, the economists can`t do it, so we`re not even going to try.

CNBC.com: How do you see the different facets of your business doing going forward?
Acosta: It looks like in specific industries, like wireless, the second half will be stronger than the first.

CNBC.com: So, what does Portal do in the present environment?
Acosta: We have to manage the business in this murky environment. ... You watch your expenses carefully. You don`t bake in a lot of growth and you don`t bake in a lot of upside.

CNBC.com: Are you planning any more acquisitions as part of the management?
Acosta: We`ve only done one acquisition. There are no fundamental holes in our product line, so we`re not planning any, but we`ll remain opportunistic.

CNBC.com: I see that revenue for your fourth quarter doubled from a year ago. Do you see that kind of growth for the next year? What about for the first quarter?
Acosta: We`re very pleased with our results. ... Predicting the future is, well, predicting the future...there`s a Chinese proverb that says it`s difficult to predict anything, especially the future.

CNBC.com: What`s the breakdown of your products, by percentage of sales, and how do you see that changing?
Acosta: We have next-generation, broadband and wireless. Wireless is the newest -- and the smallest -- and as that grows and expands, we expect for that number to grow. It`s about 16 percent of sales in the fourth quarter. Broadband makes up 60 percent and next generation makes up 23 percent.

CNBC.com: Jumping back to an earlier point you made, how much of your business is in North America?
Acosta: About 54 percent of revenue came from North America, 21 percent from Asia, and the balance in Europe.
Little: We have customers in more than 40 countries, so we have a diverse customer base.

CNBC.com: In which area do you expect the most growth?
Acosta: Asia has been offering the most growth. The growth is very, very strong, Albeit it`s not that large. The growth would be ranked Asia, Europe and then North America.
Little: Also, a lot of our customers have global scope, such as AOL {AOL, News, Boards}, Vodaphone {VOD, News, Boards}and France Telecom {FTE, News, Boards}.

Portal Software and Nokia Networks Announce OEM Agreement on Rating Systems to Support WAP, GPRS, and 3G-Based New Services
SAN FRANCISCO, Mar 6, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

      PORTAL CONFERENCE 2001

Portal Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRSF chart, msgs), a leading provider of business infrastructure software for next-generation communications services, and Nokia Networks, the infrastructure arm of Nokia, today announced an OEM agreement on rating systems to support WAP, GPRS, and 3G-based new services.

Nokia Networks has selected Portal`s Infranet(R) platform to be an integral component of the Nokia Charging Center (NCC), a rating and service management solution for GPRS, WAP, and UMTS mobile services. The joint solution relies on the Nokia Charging Center integrated with `off-the-shelf` Portal Infranet(R) for flexible multi-service charging for GPRS and WAP.

"For Portal Software this OEM agreement is significant because our Infranet software now becomes an integral part of the Nokia Charging Center, and Nokia is clearly a key company to work with in the wireless market," said John Little, Portal Software founder and chief executive officer. "The agreement combines technology from two industry-leading companies to benefit mobile wireless operators deploying highly profitable next-generation services."

"We believe that the Nokia Charging Center will give our customers a competitive advantage in the new services for mobile Internet. Our goal is to provide best time-to-market for the customers with pre-integrated solutions to Nokia network infrastructure and leading applications," commented Ilkka Toivola, Director of Charging and Billing Solutions Group, Nokia Networks.

Time Warner Cable Selects Portal Software`s Customer Management and Billing Platform To Support Multiple ISP Choice
CUPERTINO, Calif., Mar 6, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Portal Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRSF chart, msgs) today announced that Time Warner Cable has licensed Portal`s Infranet(R) customer management and billing platform to support multiple ISP choice and usage- and value-based billing of its broadband cable services.

Time Warner Cable`s initiative will allow multiple independent ISPs to deliver services, content or applications over its broadband cable network. Subscribers then have the ability to independently select services from different ISPs based upon the competitive nature of each ISP`s service offering.

The initiative enables Time Warner Cable to provide its subscribers with a choice of broadband ISP, which places special demands on its business software. With Portal`s Infranet, Time Warner Cable can segment a single installation of Infranet into multiple `brands,` each supporting its own subscriber management, pricing structure and business rules while giving each of its retail ISPs complete control and security over its data. In addition, the flexibility of Infranet allows easy integration with Time Warner`s existing software infrastructure, which supports analog video services.

`Time Warner Cable is leading the industry in its adoption of multiple ISP choice. Portal Software has demonstrated that Infranet can support the business requirements arising from this initiative,` said Cyndee Everman, vice president operational support systems at Time Warner Cable. `Portal`s leadership in next-generation services industry coupled with its effective partnership with our other software suppliers made them the clear choice for Time Warner Cable.`

Also, durchhalten!

DataOne Asia Chooses Portal Software`s Infranet to Support Regional Internet Data Centers
CUPERTINO, Calif., Mar 27, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Leading pan-Asian managed service provider sees competitive advantage

in using Portal`s real-time customer management and billing platform

Portal Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRSF chart, msgs) a leading provider of business infrastructure software for Internet and next-generation communications services, has signed a contract with DataOne Asia, a pan-Asian managed service provider.

DataOne Asia will use Infranet(R), Portal`s scalable customer management and billing platform, to support its Internet Data Centre (IDC) operations.

DataOne Asia, the wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-headquartered Keppel Telecommunications and Transportation Ltd, offers Co-location and Dedicated Server Hosting services. Having launched its first data center in August 2000, DataOne Asia today owns and operates five world-class IDCs in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.

By deploying Infranet the company can easily bundle and price their service offerings to aggressively compete in the IDC market. Infranet will also enable DataOne Asia to create and manage customer accounts, perform hands-off provisioning of service offerings, and track and control billing activities across its IDCs in Asia.

In hosting "live" e-business exchanges, DataOne Asia recognizes the value of selecting a single platform to integrate its customer management and billing information so that employees can access real-time data to effectively reach and service clients. Instead of building its own proprietary software, DataOne Asia saw the business advantage of collaborating with world-class technology partners like Portal Software to leverage the strength of off-the-shelf packaged software.

"We see an intelligent customer management and billing tool as having real benefits to our business operations," said Andrew Lee, chief executive officer of DataOne Asia. "The immediate benefits include allowing our customers to have a holistic picture of their expenditure with DataOne Asia by entering a secured Web site and arming our customer service representatives with more thorough data to increase their effectiveness. For the longer-term, Infranet is flexible enough to adapt to DataOne Asia`s evolving product offerings and scale as necessary to address significant growth."

"The IDC landscape is becoming extremely competitive as more and more companies in Asia realize the business potential in providing hosting services," said Robert Lau, vice president of Portal Software (Asia Pacific) Ltd. "To differentiate, these companies are offering advanced services which are typically billed on a usage basis. Infranet is ideal for supporting the new services that IDCs are implementing like content delivery, and hosted storage. It is a technology platform that was designed from the ground up to be uniquely capable of supporting very complex service offerings and ever changing business models. Our proven platform minimizes technology risk and reduces long-term cost of ownership. We are delighted that DataOne Asia has chosen our customer management and billing software to support the growth of its regional IDC business."

zu portal noch ein sehr interessanter kommentar:

Here is a something from Susan Passoni, of CSFB that I think addresses your question)
      --------------------------------------------
Yesterday, PRSF announced that it was awarded a contract from China Mobile for PRSF`s Infranet Interconnect product to support settlement billing services. Infranet Interconnect is a component of PRSF`s Infranet product line that was obtained through the acquisition of Solution 42 in November 2000.

China Mobile is China`s largest wireless carrier with roughly 65 million subscribers through its subsidiary operations in 25 Chinese provinces. The company provides wireless voice, data, IP telephony and other multimedia services. China Mobile is owned by China Telecom, an existing PRSF customer that has signed 13 deals with PRSF in the past two years.

Infranet Interconnect will provide China Mobile with a complete solution to manage and support interconnect billing allowing accurate reconciliation between China Mobile`s subsidiaries. The product was launched in February and can be purchased with other Infranet components or on a standalone basis. This contract win is an illustration of the strategic fit and strong revenue synergy potential from the Solution 42 acquisition.

China Mobile is the largest single-operator wireless carrier in the world and we view this contract as a very impressive win for PRSF. This serves as another testament to PRSF`s ability to penetrate tier-one carriers with its
off-the-shelf products. It also demonstrates PRSF`s ability to leverage existing carrier relationships to win more business.

In fiscal 4Q (January), Asia Pacific was PRSF`s fastest growing geographical segment, increasing 24% sequentially and representing 21% of total sales. This contract continues to demonstrate PRSF`s impressive momentum in the Asia region.

      Gehts jetzt endlich los? :)

      gourmet
