HOT products of tomorrow EXTENDED SYSTEMS.

"Look for companies that have introduced or are about to introduce what could become the hot products of tomorrow. In the chip area, some examples are LSI Logic (LSI:NYSE - news) with its CDMA chip for wireless phones and Atmel (ATML:Nasdaq - news) with its high-end flash memory for Bluetooth applications, or XTND (XTND:Nasdaq - news) with there qualified Bluetooth software."

Carl Yankowski, chief executive of Palm about some of Palm`s strategies.

"I personally prefer and believe that a PDA-sized device with a wireless Bluetooth connectivity . . . to an ear bud - so you can simply hold and write, and have your radio down here and be talking back and forth - will probably end up being the preferred form factor, as opposed to these forced integrations."

How do you think Bluetooth will transform the future of wireless?

"Just the way we`ve done with infrared. I mean, Bluetooth is a radio frequency, a high-frequency infrared. It`s going to have dramatic effects in terms of localization and personalization. If you turn on your accessibility to Bluetooth signals, you`ll be able to walk down a street [past] a store [and] get information. I could have given people the ability to Bluetooth-wise download my presentation straight into their Palm [devices] right from this meeting room, for example. You are going to see a lot of marketing aspects [for] people who have the ability to do automatic couponing in sports arenas, etc. You`ll have the ability to get information wirelessly and locally. So, I think Bluetooth is going to be both a deliverer of information and an enabler between devices - like having a core Palm device in your hand [that`s] Bluetooth-enabled to a headset microphone that might be so small that it sits up here; you don`t have any wires, and yet it gives you all the conveniences and freedoms of writing on a normal-sized tablet and screen and multitasking as you talk."

Why these calling cards will soon be a credit to us all

      BY BEN HAMMERSLEY

A special mobile phone service will make it easier to buy goods online, and help to reduce fraud

Mobile phone users will soon be able to use their handset to make credit card payments, following an announcement from the EMV group — which comprises Europay, Mastercard and Visa.
The system uses special mobile phones with a slot that fits the newer credit cards, those with the built-in chips. These cards are rare in the UK but common across the rest of Europe: there are 400,000 in use in France alone.

By inserting a card into the slot and entering a pin code users can authorise payment from their credit card accounts. This allows for interesting possibilities: e-commerce websites, for example, would no longer need to know or ask for your card details or address. All they would need is your phone number.

It would work like this: you go on to a website and choose what you want to buy. The site asks for your phone number, sends the details to your bank, which then sends an SMS (text message) to your phone asking whether you want to make the purchase. To proceed, you insert your credit card into the phone and tap in your pin code. Your bank confirms the payment, and sends an acknowledgement, and your address, to the website.

The advantages are numerous. You are dealing directly with your bank, so you have no fear of your credit card details going astray on the net. You are also spared the hassle of having to type your address into every site from which you buy.

The vendors benefit as they are sure that it is you who is using your credit card. Such a transaction cuts down on fraud, for which the seller would have been liable — one cause for many a dot-com’s downfall.

Europay expects that the next generation of mobile phones will have Bluetooth technology. It will enable people to use their Switch debit card to pay wirelessly for goods, such as train tickets or soft drinks, bought from machines.
