      Fonix speech recognition technology

How many words can be in the active word list?
Is the word list, and therefore commands available, limited only by the storage ability of the processor specific to the application?

-------------From FAAST EMBEDDED 1.0 ONLINE MANUAL---------------

Word Spotting - A type of recognition that allows the user to say a single word in a sentence. The recognition engine matches the word against the active word list and extracts the correct word. Fonix supports this model with Speaker-independent recognition.

Grammar - A type of recognition that allows the user to say a several words in a sentence. The recognition engine matches the words against the active word list and extracts the correct words. Fonix supports this model with Speaker-independent recognition.

Fonix products and solutions are sold into two markets based on
processor size and speed, and memory and power capacity. They include
server-based solutions (scaling from desktop/laptop applications to connected
server applications and even to full distributed solutions) and embedded
solutions (smaller processors with limited memory and power capacity).

Server-Based Markets - Interactive voice response solutions and voice
web portal development are two of the most advanced markets for automated
speech, and sales are increasing each year. Current industry revenue estimates
indicate that customized automated call centers, virtual operators, packaged
call center software, custom vertical market dictation systems and general
desktop dictation systems have led server-based speech applications into the
market. Additionally, new product areas for automated speech include network
systems, telephone company email reader services, software document readers,
Internet navigation and screenless access, website text readers and mobile
computing solutions. Currently, server-based markets are trending toward the
convergence of wireless data transmission and connectivity between mobile
      computing and fixed-server databases.

The FAAST framework, including Fonix TTS and ASR engines, is marketed
primarily to solution integrators, including OEMs and VARs, who bring together
various applications and products to provide a complete solution to their
end-user customers. Fonix has entered into agreements with several key solution
providers such as Nortel Networks, Nuance Communications, Envox, and Motorola
Mobile Internet Exchange for one or both of these engines.

Breakthrough Software Platform Increases Speed, Effectiveness and ROI
Of Back-Office Applications Connected to Web, Voice and Mobile Devices

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Xora, a wireless and
voice-enabled data applications company, today announced its plans to
transform the way enterprises build applications to link back-office systems
with wireless and wireline mobile devices. For the first time, companies can
achieve ROI with mobile deployment by building direct connections from devices
such as PDAs or cellular phones to ERP, CRM, supply chain and database
systems. Backed by its patent-pending platform, Xora is breaking through the
deployment barriers that keep many companies from achieving success with
mobile applications. Now, enterprises can build mobile applications from
within the native environment of their back office systems in one to two
weeks, including groundbreaking voice access to data with natural language
      queries.
"Despite all the activity focused on the mobile enterprise, companies
continue to wrestle with ROI from their projects," commented Sanjay Shirole,
CEO of Xora. "The Xora platform represents a new standard of deployment and
achieving ROI, one that happens in weeks, not months or years, and represents
      a genuine operational saving."
Hundreds of enterprises striving to connect their businesses with mobile
applications face challenges to successful deployment. These challenges
include complex integration requirements that drive long, expensive timelines,
and the lack of resources to connect with the large and confusing range of
mobile devices. Smart organizations connect mobile technology directly to the
existing back-office systems with proven ROI: CRM, ERP, supply chain and
databases. To achieve a rapid, efficient connection, firms can use internal
back-office expertise to connect Xora`s pre-built solutions to mobile devices
of any type Xora extends this flexibility to the most appropriate access
method at any given time: Web on a LAN, wireless PDA or voice. With its
launch, Xora is expanding the mobile enterprise market by delivering this
efficiency in timelines of weeks, not months, enabling companies to achieve
ROI quickly. Target applications include sales, field service and support,
      supply chain, manufacturing and shipping.
"We have 700 field staff who use the Home Finishes proprietary Site One
Work Order Management System to track and manage their jobs," said Chris
Gatley, senior vice president of Home Finishes, a leading home warranty
provider. "We wanted to create a wireless solution to manage the Time and
Expense module and eliminate the 4000 pieces of paper we generate each week.
We chose the Xora platform, as it is a prebuilt solution that works on our
existing Nextel phones, and allowed us to implement a solution in a matter of
days. The Xora solution allows us to collect the same information with more
accuracy than the paper-based system it replaces," Gatley added. "We forecast
a ten-times return on our investment and we should see ROI within a few
months. The Xora platform is a key part of our strategy to offer a higher
level of service and a unique value proposition to our clients."
Powering Xora`s competitive advantages in the marketplace is the company`s
dynamic transformation and integration engine, which provides real-time, two-
way communication between all mobile devices and virtually any back-office
application, including homegrown legacy systems. The engine accelerates
deployment with pre-built connections to major enterprise applications such as
Siebel CRM, Clarify, Remedy, Oracle CRM, Oracle ERP, i2 technologies and
leading EAI vendors such as Vitria. Xora extends this interoperability with
powerful Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology from Nuance and Xora`s
own Dynamic Voice Grammar Engine (DVGE) that enables developers to build
dynamic grammars at runtime without specialized training in speech
programming. The Xora platform allows companies to build their applications
once, deploying them on Web, through voice and wireless devices.

This report is available in English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Portuguese, Japanese, Hindi and Italian, for international distribution. The following is a Global News Network Special Report on the Fonix Corporation.

Fonix has now established contracts with Microsoft, Panasonic, Nortel, Motorola, Nuance, Envox, Conita, General Magic, Kunnsoft, Voci, PipeBeach, Siemens, Concierge, Odyssey and RCA. The Fonix Corporation has progressed at the speed of sound since their debut on the market in 1999 and, as the leading provider of human-user-interface technology, is on the ground floor of an industry that is set to explode across the global landscape of the world of commercial and consumer electronics.

The Fonix Corporation has created the quintessential voice recognition technology systems, protected by a series of worldwide patents, by mechanically recreating the human auditory system based on a complex series of neural networks, extracting the fundamental mathematical elements of the human language with human inflection, intonation and clarity. They have employed this technology in all natural interface technologies. If you can think of an application requiring a machine to interact with a human being -- you have thought of an area where voice recognition technology will soon become omnipresent.

In the very near future, voice recognition technology will be used in virtually all computers, telephones, camcorders, televisions, wireless handhelds, cell phones, automobiles, and e-commerce applications (each category being a colossal industry in and by itself and yet, individually, only a small percentage of voice recognition applications. E-commerce alone, only in its infancy, is projected to generate over 65 billion dollars in revenues by the end of 2001).

Voice recognition will also be used in virtually all forms of household appliances, computer video games, 3 -D virtual reality programs, educational tools, security devices, universal translators for Internet and face to face communication, telephone and retail credit card systems as well as interactive programs and applications of every nature. The overall market potential is monumental. The use for this technology and the scope of Fonix applications is so immense that a series of reports would have to be written to list all its applications. As stated in Hoover`s company capsule, "when you hear phonics, Fonix Corporation hears the sound of cold, hard cash". A recent Microsoft website review referred to one of these applications, the Fonix TimeTalk for Pocket PCs, as "one of the most unique, advanced technological applications available".

Voice recognition technology will clearly be in the future of all technologies that require human interaction with a machine -- as the most effective and efficient way for machines to serve man is for the machines to directly interface with their human-users; for computers and machines to talk and interact in a natural way with their controllers.

With the Fonix line of voice recognition technologies, Fonix has made science fiction -- science fact. As a charter member of Microsoft`s Embedded Tools Partner since October of 1999, in a little over a year, Fonix has successfully created a global technology for the next generation of computer electronics.

Fonix Technology on the Infineon TriCore

Evaluation Information for Speech Recognition and Text-to-Speech Technologies

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This page provides an overview of two types of Fonix technology: Speech Recognition and Text-To-Speech. In addition to this, you will find instructions on how to evaluate the technology using the Infineon TriCore. The evaluation program demonstrates the use of a customized vocabulary set for the Fonix AcuVoice Unlimited Vocabulary TTS system and illustrates the ability of the TriCore to handle its increased calculation load.

      1 Speech Recognition

Fonix speech recognition technology works well in embedded systems where size limits most speech recognizers. The Fonix Customized Vocabulary Speech Recognizer (CVSR) is speaker-independent and does not require training to the user`s voice. Implementations of the Speech Recognizer use an active vocabulary containing up to several hundred words.

1 What are the main components of the CVSR?
Fonix speech recognition technology consists of three main components: acoustic feature extraction, phoneme probability estimation, and word decoding.

Acoustic feature extraction is the phase where frequency domain features are computed. The number of features and the amount of temporal context can be modified somewhat to accommodate the size and speed of the target platform.

Phoneme probability estimation is done through a neural network whose inputs are the features from the previous stage and whose outputs are probabilities for each phoneme. The number of inputs, hidden nodes, and outputs can be adjusted to affect both accuracy and speed.

Word decoding occurs through a Viterbi- type search. The inputs are the phoneme probabilities and a vocabulary of possible words to be recognized and their pronunciations. The output is a ranked list of recognized words and their scores. Speed and size of the word decoding process is affected by the number of phoneme probability inputs, the number of words in the vocabulary, the number of pronunciations per word, and how aggressively candidate words are pruned from the decoding process.

2 What are the technology highlights of the CVSR?

      Advanced Neural Network-based speech recognition

Word spotting that allows more natural speech input

Finite-state-grammar, resulting in more complex speech input

Dynamic background noise adaptation for high recognition accuracy in noisy environments

3 How does the CVSR provide microphone sampling and speech detection?
The StrongARM simultaneously records from the microphone and the speech detector searches for speech that has higher volume than background noise. Microphone sampling is triggered by one of the StrongARM`s timers which has been configured to interrupt the CPU at an 8 kHz frequency. Each time microphone sampling is triggered, a single 16 bit sample is stored in a RAM buffer. In the absence of anything other than background noise, microphone sampling continues indefinitely and the same buffers are reused. When appropriate speech is detected, a recognition buffer is allocated and the packet of speech is passed to that buffer for analysis.

      2 Text-To-Speech

Fonix Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology provides two different approaches, Customized Vocabulary, and Unlimited Vocabulary.

1 What is Customized Vocabulary TTS?
The Customized system gives completely natural sounding speech, but available vocabulary is restricted and each application must be specially built. The concatenated speech is generated from cluster palettes containing all the pieces of sound. This results in a voice that is virtually indistinguishable from actual human speech. Proprietary compression techniques yield palettes with small footprints.

2 What is Unlimited Vocabulary TTS?
The Fonix Unlimited Vocabulary provides a completely unrestricted vocabulary of understandable speech output. This system uses recordings of each sound and the software means for concatenating them in desired words and phrases. The software allows for modifications to pitch, emphasis, and pauses that provide correct meaning and context to spoken words and phrases.

3 What are the technology highlights of Text-to Speech?

Any alphanumeric text can be spoken naturally with high degree of accuracy

User can modify part-of-speech, pronunciation, stress, and pausation

Numbers voiced with precision and smoothness of pre-recorded speech

Over 60,000 proper names are used

      3 Technology Evaluation

This section provides a detailed list of the equipment you will need to facilitate the evaluation. Step-by-step instructions accompany a wiring diagram.
