AT&T Wireless Taps Openwave For Next-Gen WAP Gateway
BASKING RIDGE, NEW JERSEY, Feb 22, 2001 (Newsbytes via COMTEX) -- Mobile Internet users of AT&T Wireless [NYSE:AWE] moved a few steps closer to getting higher access speeds this week when the mobile carrier announced a major deal with Openwave [NASDAQ:OPWV].
Openwave, which took the wraps off its next-generation microbrowser technologies at this week`s GSM Congress in Cannes, France, promising the arrival of color and graphics for mobile Internet users, is to provide a full WAP (wireless application protocol) gateway for AT&T Wireless` new GSM/PCS GPRS (general packet radio service) system.
GPRS allows single PCS data channels to be daisy-chained together to allow wireless data speeds approaching that of a regular wireline 56K modem user.
Using the technology also allow wireless carriers to offer IP (Internet protocol) connections for always-on Internet facilities.
Openwave already provides gateway services for AT&T Wireless` CDPD (cellular data, packet data) Pocketnet mobile Internet service, but the new GPRS gateway will support a wide variety of mobile Internet protocols and systems.
These include support for what Openwave calls "multi-mode browsing," which includes xHTML (extended HTML), WML (wireless markup language), HDML (handheld markup language) and cHTML (compact HTML).
The real advantage to AT&T Pocketnet users, however, is that the gateway will allow access to a great many more pages on the general Internet, with the Openwave gateway converting formats.
It`s unlikely that all Web pages will be accessible to AT&T Pocketnet users, simply because many Web pages are constructed to be full-screen and feature Java plus Javascript facilities.
Coupled with HTML Frames, such pages are unsuitable for conversion to a format that can be viewed satisfactorily on a mobile Internet-enabled mobile phone screen.
Don`t hold your breath waiting for AT&T Wireless to announce when its GPRS services will go live. Like many European wireless carriers, the US carrier wisely remains coy about its GPRS service introduction dates.

Net loss for the third fiscal quarter including merger and acquisition-related charges, stock-based compensation and unrealized losses on non-marketable equity securities was $151.2 million, or $0.91 per basic and diluted share, compared to a net loss of $228.6 million, or $1.38 per basic and diluted share for the quarter ended December 31, 2000, and a net loss of $77.5 million, or $0.56 per basic and diluted share for the third quarter in the prior fiscal year.

The Company benefited from strong wireless subscriber additions throughout the third quarter, as consumers around the world signed up for mobile Internet services. Total active mobile subscribers using Openwave products grew by 5.3 million to over 17.4 million at the end of March 2001 up from 12.1 million at the end of December 2000. This growth was evident on a global basis as the Company saw strong results from leading carriers in Japan, the Asia Pacific region, the Americas, and Europe. Additionally, with the signing of KG Telecom, Openwave has secured customer relationships with four of NTT DoCoMo`s iMODE partners including AT&T Wireless, Hutchison Telecom, and Telecom Italia Mobile.

Openwave`s messaging business continued to gain global momentum, as licensed subscribers reached an industry leading 175.9 million seats, at the end of March, with activated seats at 108.7 million. As a key component of the Services OS, the Openwave messaging platform has been recognized by leading carriers as a critical technology for the next generation of messaging services as illustrated by the 37 carriers, which have each licensed over 1 million seats.

New product announcements in the fiscal third quarter included the launch of the Openwave Services OS, a suite of open, IP-based mobile Internet software that enables mobile operators to rapidly deploy new revenue-generating services while providing mobile subscribers with a more compelling, easy-to-use, and personalized mobile Internet experience. Additionally, Openwave launched its new Mobile Access Gateway 5.0 and Next Generation Browser, as well as an end-to-end set of location services.

      Financial Outlook

The following statements are forward looking and actual results may differ materially due to factors noted below, among others.

For the remainder of calendar year 2001, Openwave`s outlook is that quarterly revenues will continue to grow at 10 to 20 percent sequentially, resulting in calendar year 2001 revenues of approximately $640 million and pro forma earnings per share of approximately $0.46, excluding merger and acquisition-related charges, stock-based compensation and unrealized losses on non-marketable equity securities. The Company`s outlook is that gross profit will range between 79 and 81 percent for the calendar year 2001.

The Company`s pro forma operating profit excluding merger and acquisition-related charges and stock-based compensation was 11.6 percent for the third fiscal quarter of 2001. The Company intends to continue to improve its pro forma operating profit through calendar year 2001, with a targeted pro forma operating profit of approximately 13 percent by the fourth calendar quarter of 2001.

      Openwave CEO reiterates outlook
Listwin believes mobile Net will mature in U.S. last
      By Michael Baron, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 4:08 PM ET May 21, 2001

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Don Listwin sees opportunity in the declining margins in wireless voice traffic over telecommunications networks.

"It`s risky to build new networks with average revenue per user down and price wars to woo users eroding margins," Listwin, the chief executive officer and president of Openwave Systems (OPWV: news, msgs, alerts) , told analysts and money managers at Lehman Bros. Next Generation Wireless Conference in New York Monday. "The carriers are looking for ways to monetize data traffic and that`s where we fit in."

For this reason, he said the timeline for development of the third-generation networks is immaterial to Openwave`s success.

Noting that the summer is seasonally slow, Listwin also reiterated Openwave`s expectation of sequential revenue growth of 10 to 20 percent in the June quarter from the March quarter`s $130 million total, resulting in operating profit growth of 14 percent for fiscal 2001 ending June 30.

Based in Redwood City, Calif., Openwave develops open Internet-protocol based communications infrastructure software.

Listwin believes the company`s products - which enable Web browsing, messaging and electronic commerce among other applications - will have an addressable global market of roughly $14 billion by 2005 if current predictions for the growth of the mobile Internet are borne out. One interesting aspect of the development of this market, according to Listwin, is that it will mature in North America last.

"Japan is, by far, the leader, and we expect the rest of the Asia/Pacific region to follow with Europe next," said Listwin. "Unlike other technologies, the U.S. and North America will be last to adopt because at present, the service is so poor."

The most promising areas for applications, Listwin said, are messaging and entertainment. He called Monday`s wireless instant messaging alliance of VoiceStream (VSTR: news, msgs, alerts) and America Online (AOL: news, msgs, alerts) , a positive sign that demonstrates enthusiasm for this kind of service.

Asked about wireless commerce and the recent dimming of its prospects, Listwin said the current reluctance of consumers to make purchases via a mobile phone is more cultural than technical.

"It took me twenty years to get my mother to use an ATM," he quipped. "We don`t see mobile commerce as a key driver for a couple of years and it`s not prevalent in our current model."

Openwave Reports Results for Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2001
Fiscal Year Revenues Increase 218 Percent to $465 Million Management Reaffirms Profitability Outlook for Calendar Year 2001
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Jul 23, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV chart, msgs), the worldwide leader of open, IP-based communications infrastructure software and applications, today announced results for the fourth fiscal quarter and fiscal year ended June 30, 2001.

      (Photo:http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20001204/OPENWAVE )

Fourth fiscal quarter revenues increased approximately 11 percent to $144.7 million from $130.0 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2001, and 153 percent from $57.3 million in the comparable period a year earlier. Revenues for the twelve months ended June 30, 2001, increased 218 percent to $465.3 million from $146.4 million for the comparable period ended June 30, 2000.

Deferred revenue was $90.3 million as of June 30, 2001, an increase of $8.3 million from the third fiscal quarter.

Pro forma earnings for the fourth fiscal quarter were $19.2 million, or $0.11 per diluted share, and for the fiscal year were $45.4 million, or $0.25 per diluted share, excluding merger and acquisition-related charges and stock-based compensation. The pro forma earnings per share number is based on 177.1 million weighted average diluted shares outstanding for the fourth fiscal quarter and 182.2 million weighted average diluted shares outstanding for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2001.

The Company achieved $14.6 million of positive cash flows from operations for the fiscal quarter. As of June 30, 2001, the Company had cash, cash equivalents, short-term and long-term investments of $369.7 million, excluding $20.7 million set aside as restricted cash, total assets of $1.73 billion and stockholders` equity of $1.56 billion.

"I`m pleased we have achieved our objectives for the fiscal year. We have executed well within a difficult environment," said Don Listwin, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "We continue to lead in the adoption of the mobile Internet globally."

Net loss for the fourth fiscal quarter including merger and acquisition-related charges and stock-based compensation was $142.2 million, or $0.84 per basic and diluted share, compared to a net loss of $151.2 million, or $0.91 per basic and diluted share for the quarter ended March 31, 2001, and a net loss of $177.4 million, or $1.13 per basic and diluted share for the fourth quarter in the prior fiscal year.

Net loss for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2001, including merger and acquisition-related charges and stock-based compensation was $690.0 million, or $4.17 per basic and diluted share, compared to a net loss of $288.3 million, or $2.06 per basic and diluted share, for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2000.

Total active mobile subscribers grew by 4.2 million to over 21.6 million at the end of June 2001, up from 17.4 million at the end of March 2001. Mobile subscriber growth was impacted by slower subscriber growth in the highly penetrated Japanese market and by the conversion of large carrier customers to contracts with higher subscriber activation and usage thresholds. Openwave`s messaging business continued to grow, as licensed subscribers reached an industry leading 180.9 million seats, at the end of June, with activated seats at 118.5 million highlighted by the 37 carriers which have each licensed over 1 million seats.

Of particular significance during the fourth quarter, the Company announced its support of the GSM Association`s Mobile Services Initiative (M-Services). This initiative was created to accelerate deployment and adoption of mobile Internet services within the GSM community this year. Openwave is contributing two key components: first, WML extensions enabling a highly intuitive graphical user interface (GUI), and second, an end-to-end architecture, called Download Fun, supporting the secure download of consumer-oriented content, such as ring tones, images and wallpapers.

      Financial Outlook

The following statements are forward looking and actual results may differ materially due to factors noted below, among others.

Management`s outlook since the beginning of calendar 2001 has been that quarterly revenues would grow 10 to 20 percent sequentially. For the quarter ending September 30, 2001, Openwave`s outlook is that seasonal growth patterns in its served wireless markets will result in quarterly revenues increasing at the low end of this range. For the quarter ending December 31, 2001, the Company`s outlook is that revenues will grow by 10 to 20 percent sequentially, with the higher rate of growth contingent upon anticipated seasonal growth patterns that impact wireless markets around the holiday season, as well as M-Services and other growth opportunities.

The Company`s pro forma earnings per share outlook for calendar year 2001 remains unchanged at approximately $0.43, excluding merger and acquisition-related charges and stock-based compensation. The Company`s outlook is that gross profit will range between 81 and 83 percent for the remainder of calendar year 2001.

The Company`s pro forma operating profit excluding merger and acquisition-related charges and stock-based compensation was 13 percent for the fourth fiscal quarter of 2001. The Company`s targeted pro forma operating profit is now approximately 14 percent by the fourth calendar quarter of 2001.

      Merill Lynch positiv für OPTV

6:19am 07/30/01 Merrill adds QCOM to `techfolio` (DST, QCOM, MOT, OPWV) By Emily Church
Merrill Lynch is tweaking its "techfolio" and replacing DST Systems (DST) with Qualcomm (QCOM) , noting that the wireless tech company recently reiterated its earnings outlook. Amid sectors, Merrill said it`s downgrading energy technology to underweight from overweight and is upgrading wireless from underweight to equal weight. Merrill said the near-term outlook for the energy tech group "has deteriorated." In wireless, Merrill said "our analysts are seeing more modest estimate revisions and inventories back to normal levels by the end of summer... We like stocks such as Motorola (MOT) and Openwave [s:opwv].
