Eni, through its Agip Division, is holder and operator of the "Bucchianico Exploration License" and has completed the drilling of the Miglianico 1 onshore well to the north of Ortona on the Abruzzo coast.

Preliminary findings are positive and confirm the high quality of the oil (34° API) available in a quantity of around 1000 barrels a day, plus associated natural gas of around 32,000 cubic metres a day.

The well was drilled after geological and geophysical studies had identified the hydrocarbons in the carbonate rock. During drilling electrograph data had indicated a 100 metre-thick layer of hydrocarbons at 4800 metres. Subsequent productivity tests to ascertain the well's potential flow rate were then carried out.

The size of the field will be known only after 2 or 3 test wells have been drilled. Current data suggests that reserves amount to about 40/45 million barrels, making it a medium sized field, considerably smaller than the Val d'Agri one, which is around ten times larger.

The discovery is a positive one, however, for hydrocarbon exploration in Italy and of especial encouragement for continued activity in this relatively unexplored area.
