      Press Release

Sun Microsystems Expands Inktomi Search Software Deployment Across Global Network

FOSTER CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 12, 2001--Inktomi Corp. (Nasdaq:INKT - news), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced that Sun Microsystems Inc. has expanded the deployment of Inktomi® Search Software across its intranet, extranet and public sites to enable the efficient search of more than 40 million documents on more than 30,000 servers worldwide. By leveraging the Inktomi platform for its internal and external search, Sun can manage the rapid growth of its network and the documents within it while providing employees, customers and Internet users with high quality search results.

Inktomi Search Software is a robust, scalable platform that powers the Inktomi Search/Custom, Inktomi Search/Enterprise and Inktomi Search/Site applications. Sun has deployed Inktomi Search/Enterprise and Inktomi Search/Site as an easy to install and maintain licensed search solution that enables natural language search and topic hierarchy capabilities compatible with hundreds of file formats on corporate intranets, extranets and public sites.

``Our network is very demanding and requires incredible scale and flexibility from an enterprise search software product,`` said Bill Howard, senior vice president and chief information officer, Sun Microsystems. ``Inktomi Search Software provides the extensive capabilities we need for our growing network, while requiring minimal IT maintenance and administrative effort.``

In 1997, Sun`s initial deployment of the Inktomi Search Software consisted of more than one million documents on more than 2,000 servers. Today, Sun runs one of the largest and most advanced global networks and has expanded its use of the software to now process more than 170,000 queries a day on its intranet, extranet and Web sites. Additionally, with the enhanced language capabilities of Inktomi Search Software, Sun is considering a build out of its intranet to include an Asian-specific search cluster to augment European and U.S. operations.

``Inktomi is pleased to continue working with Sun as a core search solution within its global enterprise and public network,`` said Troy Toman, vice president and general manager, Inktomi Search Solutions Division. ``Our expanding relationship with Sun is a testament to the benefits our software can provide to large corporations seeking cost-savings and improved employee productivity through efficient search.``
