PRESS RELEASE - Arlanda, Sweden 6:th March 2001
NorDig members agree on DVB-MHP
NorDig* reached an agreement on March 6, 2001, on a successive transition to a common and open standard for interactive services etc. The TV audience will in the future receive and use interactive services from various operators in one way only. TV companies and content producers will develop and produce their services in a common system, very much in the same way that HTML works for the Internet.
The members of NorDig have reached an agreement to use DVB-MHP (Digital Video Broadcasting-Multimedia Home Platform). DVB is the European distribution standard for satellite and cable as well as terrestrial transmission. DVB now also covers a system for interactivity.
Today the Nordic operators work within different systems. The agreement follows the European aims for a standardisation within digital TV. The work within NorDig is based upon accepted European and international standards.
The agreement of March 6 means that the NorDig members are committed to making the transition to DVB-MHP at the latest in 2005.
As from the end of 2001 all NorDig members will recommend the market to support only set top boxes that meet the specifications of NorDig I. And from the end of 2002 they will only offer their customers boxes that operate interactive services via DVB-MHP.
From that time on there will be no new interactivity in the present boxes only, but they will still function in the nets where systems like Open TV and MediaHighway are used. The present digital set top boxes can be used also after 2005 for conventional TV reception including teletext as well as the interactive services from today’s systems.
The DVB-MHP standard for interactive services will be used in the new digital nets that will be built in the near future; i.e. the terrestrial nets in Finland, Denmark and Norway.
Since the start NorDig has been working on specifying the demands of different aspects to be met by digital set top boxes. These demands are now linked to the plan for the transition to DVB-MHP. NorDig is at the moment trying to find the practical forms for testing digital boxes. The aim is to brand boxes that live up to the right standard with a NorDig logo.
The NorDig members are the most important TV and telecommunications companies and operators in the Nordic countries - Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland. The members have since the start 1997 worked for a transition to a API common system for interactivity. They agree that the transition to DVB-MHP will stimulate the market for digital TV, not the least the development of added services, as well as the convergence of the Internet and digital television.
- Choosing an open solution is a break through for Nordic co-operation and a clear signal to the rest of the world, says Arne Wessberg, head of the NorDig board, director general of YLE but also president of EBU. - I am convinced that this will stimulate the development of digital TV in all our countries. I hope that all Nordic households soon will be able to use the digital interactivity offered to them.

05Apr2001 SWEDEN: Modern Times Group MTG AB - Danish DR1 and DR2 on Viasat`s Digital TV Platform.
STOCKHOLM, Sweden-(BUSINESS WIRE)-April 5, 2001-(Nasdaq:MTGNY) (SSE:MTGA.) (SSE:MTGB.)
Viasat Denmark today signed an agreement with the Danish public service company DR.
Viasat`s Danish digital TV selection will now include the DR1 and DR2 TV channels and the P1, P3, and DR Klassisk (classical music) radio stations.
Hans-Holger Albrecht, CEO and President of Modern Times Group MTG AB commented: "We are extremely pleased about this agreement. It means that DR is sticking to the service level that all of the Nordic countries` public service companies have agreed to, i.e. making their channels digitally available to all viewers, regardless of whether they use the terrestrial network, cable TV, or a satellite dish."
The agreement between Viasat Denmark and DR will take effect immediately. The channels will be available in Denmark for those satellite dish owners with Viasat`s digital set-top boxes as soon as the transmission of DR`s channels from the satellite position 5 degrees East has been established. It is expected to be ready shortly after Easter.
"DR will not only offer these five channels to our subscribers but will additionally offer viewers a range of exciting interactive services," says Hans-Holger Albrecht.
In Norway, the public broadcast channel NRK is already available to Viasat`s digital TV subscribers. The Viasat Broad-casting business area of MTG began its transition to a digital satellite TV platform at the end of 2000, in the Nordic and Baltic countries, the Group`s core geographic areas. Up to and including the week beginning February 5, 2001, a total of 285,000 digital set-top boxes had been installed by Viasat Gold subscribers. In addition, 97,000 new set-top boxes were sold, 80% of which with Viasat Gold subscriptions. The total number of digital subscribers thus amounted to 382,000.

10Apr2001 NETHERLANDS: Broadband Internet seen at 10 mln in Europe-Study.
AMSTERDAM, April 10 (Reuters) - The adoption of high-speed, or broadband Internet in Europe will be slower than most current projections, reaching only 10 million households by 2003, according to a study by Jupiter MMXI, released on Tuesday.
The rollout of broadband Internet is hampered by lack of competition among operators, low customer demand and the high price of technology, Jupiter said.
Broadband Internet is normally defined as high-speed Internet access that is always on. It is normally delivered through the TV cable network or using DSL (digital subscriber line) technology over the telephone network.
Such services in Europe cost the consumer 200 euros to install and about 50 euros per month, Jupiter said. It added there are currently around 3.5 million broadband subscribers in Europe.
Customers are often unaware of the benefits of broadband, Jupiter added.
"The high prices currently being charged for broadband access means that the majority of consumers are discouraged from the technology. To attract these people, companies need to improve their marketing message to ensure that Europeans understand the added value of broadband," Jupiter said.
Nordic countries will grow broadband penetration the fasted with 30 percent of households in Sweden, Finland and Norway using broadband by 2005.
