First Turn-Key Linux-Based Solution to Offer High Availability
HOUSTON and REDWOOD CITY, Calif., April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news) and Check Point Software Technologies, Ltd. (Nasdaq: CHKP - news) today announced the availability of a turn-key Linux-based security solution for medium to large-sized enterprises and service providers in North America. The jointly developed ``Compaq/Check Point SolutionPaq`` is a ``Secured by Check Point(TM) Appliance`` integrating industry-leading Compaq ProLiant(TM) servers with Check Point`s market-leading VPN-1/FireWall-1 software and enabled with firewall high availability software from Rainfinity. The platform is optimized for security applications, running on a hardened Red Hat Linux operating system with all software pre-installed, pre-configured, tested and OPSEC-certified to ensure `out-of-the-box` deployment as a single, fully integrated product from Compaq and Check Point.
``This is a first in many ways,`` said David Parsons, Vice-President e- Business Solutions & Alliances for Compaq North America. ``It`s the first high-availability, Enterprise class VPN/firewall solution based on a Linux server, the first of its kind with optional integrated load balancing, the first backed by the Compaq Global Services support network, and especially the first to combine the strengths of market-leading Compaq ProLiant servers and Check Point`s VPN-1/FireWall-1 brand. This SolutionPaq may also be re- deployed as an industry-standard server, should the customer`s needs change. We are looking forward to proving how Compaq`s innovative infrastructure and access products and services can be easily integrated with network security solutions, simplifying the integration of the solution component stack and making them more readily accessible to leading IT professionals.``
Through the Compaq/Check Point SolutionPaq, Compaq and Check Point further strengthen the leadership of Check Point`s OPSEC platform and SVN architecture.
``We are pleased to expand our long-standing relationship with Compaq through this `Secured by Check Point(TM) Appliance`,`` said Asheem Chandna, vice president of business development and product management for Check Point Software Technologies. ``Compaq ProLiant platforms combined with Check Point`s market-leading VPN-1/FireWall-1 software provide customers with `best-of- breed` security solutions for enterprise and service provider deployments.``
``It will be a great benefit to offer our customers a network security solution based on the well recognized networking brands of Compaq and Check Point,`` said Rick Chenard, president of Minnesota-based Midwest Systems, Inc., a Compaq and Check Point Premiere reseller with consulting and integration expertise in secure networking solutions. ``They are names our customers know and trust. It will be a further benefit to execute efficient multi-device deployments with tools that have a pre-hardened OS, pre-loaded software, and pre-configured hardware -- basically, tools ready to rack and run.``
As the first in a family of SolutionPaqs to be offered by Compaq, the Compaq/Check Point SolutionPaq will be available initially on Compaq ProLiant ML330 and DL320 servers, which feature pedestal and space-saving 1U rack-mount profiles, running on a security-hardened version of the Red Hat Linux operating system. These SolutionPaqs will also be the first to include firewall high availability with Rainfinity`s RainWall-S software, for seamless connectivity in high volume, high security environments. Compaq Global Services will provide 7/24 telephone support and next-day service, offering optional installation and enhanced support services. The Compaq/Check Point SolutionPaq will be available in May as a single part number to resellers through Ingram Micro and through Compaq DirectPlus, with end-user prices beginning at approximately $5,500 for the complete bundle of hardware, software and services. Product details are available at www.compaq.com/security, and phone inquiries are welcome at (800) 345-1518.
With the release of the Compaq/Check Point SolutionPaq, Compaq extends its offerings in Internet security to customers looking for a hardware-based implementation. ``Compaq is pleased to be in the unique position of offering Internet security solutions for our customers seeking either application-based or pre-installed, pre-configured solutions,`` Compaq`s Parsons said.

THOM CALANDRA`S STOCKWATCH
Seeking security in trying times
Service providers may be poised to generate business
By Thom Calandra, FT MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 4:44 AM ET Apr 11, 2001
LONDON (FTMW) - Smart cards, firewalls, digital rights, intrusion detection, encryption.
A new report says managed security service providers will play an influential and profitable role at the world`s largest companies, which are opening their computer networks to the sprawling Internet.
Security concerns - from network firewalls to data protection - will mushroom the next three years. Corporations will increasingly turn to outside firms for the business of monitoring and hosting security services, says the report, from little-known FAC Equities in Boston.
One researcher, META Group, expects security budgets to grow as much as 50 percent a year this decade. Almost 5 percent of all corporate technology spending will e devoted to security concerns by year`s end, up from 1 percent, the Connecticut-based META Group says.
"Over the next three years, we see managed service providers becoming MSPs becoming a major component of on organization`s infrastructure management," FAC Equities analyst Matt Barzowskas says in his report.
To be sure, corporate security until recently was one of the best performing stock-market sectors. But earning warnings from technology companies have led some investors to conclude that Symantec Corp. (SYMC: news, msgs, alerts) , Check Point Software Technologies (CHKP: news, msgs, alerts) and other security providers are vulnerable to an economic slowdown.
Still, some Internet security companies have seen their shares endure the market`s first-quarter tumble. Symantec, which makes software that protects companies from e-mail attacks and other so-called viruses, has seen its shares rise 51 percent this year. Check Point, with one of the largest market caps in the sector at $13 billion, has suffered a share loss of 33 percent this year.
This week, RSA Security (RSAS: news, msgs, alerts) said first-quarter sales rose 21 percent to $76 million from a year ago. The company`s sales and a profit of $8.8 million were what most analysts expected. RSA is one of the largest providers of encryption and user authentication products. The Massachusetts company`s chief executive, Art Coviello, said he expected RSA to meet its financial targets in a "difficult economic environment" this year.
Most researchers agree the expense of maintaining a secure network is a priority, even in a recession. IDC, the data researcher, estimates the U.S. information security services market will grow to $8.2 billion in three years from $4.3 billion market this year.
"While organizations have realized the importance of security, there are number of daunting factors that keep CIOs up at night," Barzowskas says in his report. "There are thousands of security technology options and the technology is rapidly evolving with immature standards. The technology is complicated and fragmented into many different areas and security is and will remain a best-of-breed solution."
He and other researchers say most companies should opt for security services that last no more than a year. The pace of evolving technologies makes longer commitments too risky.
Barzowskas makes no specific recommendations on companies that might make good investments. But he cites several publicly traded companies, including Internet Security Systems (ISSX: news, msgs, alerts) , Network Associates-owned McAfee.com (NETA: news, msgs, alerts) , Pilot Network Services (PILT: news, msgs, alerts) , Symantec, VeriSign (VRSN: news, msgs, alerts) and Ubizen. Nearly all are American. Ubizen is a Brussels security consultant trades on the Easdaq Exchange in Europe.
Among private companies, there are scores, suggesting the next wave of initial public offerings will feature security services prominently. These include Aventail, which securely connects computer users to Internet applications; CyberSafe; DefendNet; DigitalMojo; OpenReach; and eTunnels, a Seattle company that builds and manages computer networks with the help of virtual private networks
