TOKYO (CBS.MW) - Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp. said Thursday that it and Sweden`s Ericsson LM were considering cooperating in the field of mobile phone handsets.

Japan`s state-run NHK television reported earlier the two companies had agreed to fold their cell phone businesses into a new joint venture in Britain.

Sony said in a statement, however, that the companies had not yet reached any concrete decisions. It did not provide further details.

According to the NHK report, Sony (SNE: news, msgs, alerts) and Ericsson (ERICY: news, msgs, alerts) (SE:000010865: news, alerts) , the world`s third-biggest supplier of mobile phones, will also jointly research and develop a next-generation high-speed cellular phone.

Shares of Sony jumped 2.7 percent, or 240 yen, to 9,200 yen by mid afternoon Tokyo. Ericsson closed up 62 cents at $6.32 in New York on Wednesday.

Analysts said a partnership would be beneficial for both sides. Motoharu Sone, a telecom analyst at Tokyo`s Tsubasa Securities, said the deal would help Sony crack into the tough European market and allow Ericsson to tap into the Sony brand name.

"If what`s been reported is true and they`ll integrate their cell phone operations, that would boost Sony`s market share in Europe and Ericsson`s in Japan. Sony`s fashionable and well-designed cell phones would be beneficial for the joint venture (if created) and has potential to attract users in the European market," said Motoharu Sone, a telecom analyst at Tokyo`s Tsubasa Securities.

"Ericsson is struggling amid intensified competition against Nokia (NOK: news, msgs, alerts) (SE:000053994: news, alerts) and Motorola (MOT: news, msgs, alerts) , so I would say this deal, if it happens, would help Ericsson regain share in the European market. The Sony brand is a big name."

Other analysts added that the alliance would boost their competitiveness in the global cell phone market and help them reduce cell phone development costs.

Although Ericsson is still the world`s top vendor in the telecom infrastructure business, its mobile phone business has been hurting due to slowing demand for handsets.

Stockholm-based Ericsson is the world`s No.3 maker of cell phones with a market share of about 10 percent.

Ericsson said late March it was axing 2,100 jobs in Sweden and halting production of handsets at two plants in the U.K., which employs about 1,200 people. The company added it aims to cut costs by 20 billion Swedish kronor ($1.97 billion) a year from 2002.
