      Samsung rumor misunderstood

      .....

An analyst at Oppenheimer & Co. explained why Novaled is different in the technology it offers to Samsung. Novaled makes “transport layers” in OLED displays. Conversely, Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ:OLED) products are used in the “emitter layer” in an OLED device. Both are used in the creation of Samsung's displays.

TVs to drive growth of OLED materials market, says DisplaySearch
Press release; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 20 August 2013]

Growing demand from large TV panels is expected to increase OLED material revenues at a compound annual growth rate of 67% through 2017, even as material revenue from mobile phones slows after 2014, according to DisplaySearch. The firm said revenues from organic materials used in the emission and common layers of OLED displays are forecast to reach US$530 million in 2013 and grow to US$3.4 billion by 2017. The growing importance of OLED materials was highlighted by the August 9, 2013 announcement that Samsung Electronics, the leading OLED panel manufacturer, was acquiring Novaled AG, a developer of common-layer OLED materials.

Until recently, AMOLED displays have mainly been used in mobile phones, but AMOLED display manufacturers are now starting to make inroads into TVs, tablets, and other large-area display applications. OLED TV unit shipments are expected to remain modest at less than a million units in 2014 and only reaching 10 million after 2017, when they will account for 10% of total OLED panel shipments. However, on an area basis, OLED TV panels are expected to account for 17% of the OLED display materials market in 2014 and will exceed the share of mobile phone panels by 2016.

"The large size of TV panels will result in OLED display area growing quickly through 2017," noted Jimmy Kim, senior analyst for DisplaySearch. "The demand for materials in the emission, common, and other OLED layers is proportional to the area of the panels; furthermore, the low yield rates for OLED TV panel manufacturing means that the consumption of raw materials is further increased; thus, the introduction of OLED TVs will result in rapid growth in the market for OLED materials."

Universal Display and Philips announce OLED lighting agreement
Press release, November 26; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 26 November 2013]

Universal Display has announced it will begin supplying Philips with phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) materials for solid-state lighting applications.

Universal Display said its PHOLED technology has the potential to maximize energy efficiency and contribute to high performance lighting devices.

According to NanoMarkets, the OLED lighting business may exceed US$2 billion in revenues by 2020. OLED lighting offers makers a low-cost lighting solution and the potential for extremely thin, lightweight and highly energy efficient lighting products. OLEDs can be manufactured on both flexible and rigid substrates, and advances in manufacturing processes could add more value in the supply chain.

Global AMOLED light-emitting material market to expand in 2014, says IHS
Press release; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Thursday 26 December 2013]

The global market for AMOLED light-emitting materials will expand to US$445 million in 2014, up from US$350 million in 2013, according to IHS.

"South Korea's Samsung Display has successfully pioneered the AMOLED business during the last five years, attaining major success in the market for smartphone panels ranging in size from 3-inches to 5-inches," said Doo Kim, principal analyst, display component and materials research. "Now other panel manufacturers are seeking to cash in on the expanding demand for AMOLEDs in smartphone, televisions and other products. This phenomenon will spur the continued increase in sales of materials used to create AMOLEDs in 2014."

The market for AMOLED light-emitting materials saw a larger 49% increase in 2013, IHS disclosed.

Samsung Display started the AMOLED market when it commenced large-scale mass production in 2008. Since then, it has led the AMOLED market's expansion, IHS noted.

In 2013, LG Display launched a white OLED (WOLED) TV panel and a flexible AMOLED panel. Meanwhile, AU Optronics (AUO) introduced samples of small- to medium-sized AMOLED panels.

In 2014, LG, AUO and Japan Display (JDI) are poised to commence or increase AMOLED panel production, IHS observed. As a result, light-emitting material makers are expected to compete in a more diverse market environment with increased demand and a broader base of customers. This will represent a marked change from the last five years, when they depended wholly on demand from Samsung Display, IHS said.

The organic light-emitting materials utilized in AMOLED panels can be largely divided into two categories: common functional layer materials and color-emitting materials. The common layer materials include hole transport layer (HTL), hole injection layer (HIL), electron transport layer (ETL), electron injection layer (EIL), capping layer (CPL), charged generation layer (CGL), electron blocking layer (EBL), efficiency enhanced layer (EEL) and RGB prime layer materials. The color-emitting materials are red, green and blue host and dopant materials. Yellow-green materials are used in WOLED. Materials such as PIN dopant are also adopted to improve efficiency.

Kaneka developed a 50,000 hours OLED lighting panel, plans to increase production capacity

DC Lifetime OLED lighting OLED production Phosphorescent

According to a news report from Japan, Kaneka developed a new OLED panel that achieves a lifetime of 50,000 hours, almost double from the company's current OLEDs. The panel is 8x8 cm in size and 1 mm thick.

Kaneka has a small production line with an annual capacity of about 20,000 panels. The company plans to expand the production capacity with an aim to halve the manufacturing costs. Kaneka plans to achieve OLED sales of ¥50 billion (around $450 million) by 2020.

We do no have more information about Kaneka's new panels. The company's current OLEDs are not very efficient (about 20 lm/W). In January 2014, however, Kaneka signed an OLED technology license agreement with Univeral Display, so hopefully the new panels use phosphorescent emitters and are more efficient.

In April 2011 Kaneka exhibited the world's largest OLED installation to date in a trade show in Milano - with 2,500 OLED panels:

The analyst firm say that the global OLED display market will grow at a CAGR of 36.7 per cent in the period to 2018.

The global OLED Display market is nearing commercialisation and is expected to grow at a high rate during the forecast period.

The report states that increased adoption of OLEDs in large-screen displays is one key trend emerging in this market. Because the average selling price of OLED displays is decreasing, manufacturers are adopting this technology across large-screen displays such as TVs and PCs.

According to the report, one of the major drivers in the market is the inherent advantages of OLED displays such as low power consumption, eco-friendliness, bright picture, and flexibility which have prompted manufacturers to adopt OLED technology across various devices.

Digitimes Research: Korea makers to expand AMOLED production capacity 36% in 2015
Tony Huang, DIGITIMES Research, Taipei [Tuesday 27 January 2015]

The global AMOLED panel industry saw an over 10% on-year decline in sales revenue during 2014 largely due to lagging sales from Samsung Display. Despite the decline, Korea makers LG Display and Samsung Display have prospects for the technology in 2015 and will expand accumulative production capacity by 36%, up from the 24% expansion the two makers achieved in 2014, according to Digitimes Research.

In 2015, Samsung is eyeing opportunities in the AMOLED flexible display industry and will have a new 6G A3 line enter mass production in the first half of the year. Additionally, the line will produce a variety of curved and flexible AMOLED panels for used in handsets.

Samsung Display is also shifting its strategy in 2015 by expanding its customer base. In 2014, 87% of the company's sales went to the Samsung Group (primarily Samsung Electronics), but that percentage is expected to drop to 55% in 2016 as Samsung Display aims to supply China vendors and other customers AMOLED panels.

LG Display meanwhile will have its new M2 8G line enter mass production in the first half of 2015, which will focus on production of OLED TV panels as LG Electronics pushes forth OLED TVs in 2015 to compete against other technologies in the high-end TV segment.

Despite efforts from panel makers outside of Korea such as AU Optronics (AUO) to produce AMOLED solutions for applications such as smartwatches, production capacity is limited and therefore Korea makers will remain the top AMOLED panel suppliers in 2015, added Digitimes Research.

Universal Display announces 1Q15 financial results
Press release, May 8; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Friday 8 May 2015]

Universal Display has announced that for the first quarter of 2015 its net income of US$1.3 million, or US$0.03 per diluted share, on revenues of US$31.2 million, compared to net income of US$4 million, or US$0.09 per diluted share, on revenues of US$37.8 million for the first quarter of 2014.

"During the first quarter, we saw the introduction of new OLED displays, including flagship products from our top customers, which led to higher volumes of our red and green emitters sold, offset by volume pricing discounts. The quarter also reflected the continued downward trend of host sales, consistent with our expectations. As the year progresses, we expect the continued proliferation of OLED adoption in the marketplace to drive revenue growth in the second half of this year," said Sidney D Rosenblatt, Executive VP and CFO of Universal Display. "The broadening of the OLED display product portfolio from flexibles and wearables, including smartwatches, to high-end smartphones, mid-end smartphones, high-end tablets, Full HD and Ultra HD (4K) TVs, exemplifies the growing breadth of the OLED display market opportunity. On the lighting front, developmental activity continues to flourish as efficacy rates and lifetimes increase. Broadly speaking, we believe that OLED technology can provide the design freedom for display and lighting makers to dramatically alter the consumer and illumination landscape, and create differentiated, high-performing, energy-efficient, innovative products."

The company reported revenues of US$31.2 million, compared to revenues of US$37.8 million in the same quarter of 2014. Material sales were US$26.8 million, down 5% sequentially and down 24% compared to the first quarter of 2014, primarily due to a decrease in host material volume. Royalty and license fees were US$4.4 million, up from US$1.8 million in the first quarter of 2014.

No revenue was recognized under the Samsung Display (SDS) licensing agreement in the first quarter, as SDC is obligated to make licensing payments in the second and fourth quarters of the year. For 2015, the company expects to recognize US$60 million in SDC licensing revenues for the full year. Royalty revenue was also not recognized under the new LG Display (LGD) licensing and royalty agreement in the first quarter of 2015, as these revenues are recognized one quarter in arrears when the royalty amount is reported to us.

The company reported operating income of US$1.8 million, down from US$6.6 million for the first quarter of 2014. Operating expenses were US$29.5 million, compared to US$31.2 million in the same quarter of 2014. Cost of materials was US$8.6 million, compared to US$9.9 million in the first quarter of 2014, reflecting the decline in host material sales volume.

During the first quarter, the company generated US$47 million in operating cash flow, mainly stemming from the receipt of upfront license fees, prepaid royalties and milestone payments. These resulted in working capital increasing to US$367.9 million at the end of the quarter.

Universal Display Up on Prospects of Apple Adopting OLED
Shares of computer peripherals producer Universal Display Corp. (OLED - Snapshot Report) jumped 2.49% touching a high of $52.99, before closing a notch lower at $52.60, following speculations that Apple (AAPL - Analyst Report) will completely transition to organic light emitting diode (OLED - Snapshot Report) displays.

Apple launched its watch in April this year. The watch was the first Apple device to feature an active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) screen and marked a shift from LCD screens, which are used in iPhones and iPods. The AMOLED technology doesn't use a backlight to light up the screen, saving on space and power. This technology made way to the minute Apple Watch screen and lowered the space required to store all the different layers.

Finally, Apple's OLED adoption opens the door for it to use OLED displays in larger products - mainly the iPhone and iPad. Apple cannot afford to ignore OLED displays for long as those displays are superior to LCDs, and enable radical new design options such as curved or even bendable displays.

So now analysts anticipate Apple's OLED adoption to continue in its forthcoming products including iPads and iPhones also, which have much larger acceptance than its watch. Apple apparently has inked deals with Foxconn and Innolux to build a plant to produce flexible OLEDs for both smartphones and wearables and also a JV launched by Japan Display, Sony, and Panasonic (known as JOLED) to make OLEDs for upcoming iPads.

With reports of Apple’s transition to the superior OLED technology doing the rounds, Universal Display, being the leader in the market, expects to be approached. The rumors created excitement among investors, resulting in a boost in the company’s share price.

Universal Display (OLED - Snapshot Report) is an OLED research company, and one of the pioneers in the space. OLEDs are solid-state devices made of thin films of organic molecules that generate light with the use of electricity. OLEDs can offer brighter, crisper displays on electronic devices and are more power-efficient than traditional light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or liquid crystal displays (LCDs) used today.

Universal Display’s other customers include Apple’s competitors in the market, Samsung and LG Display (LPL - Snapshot Report). Universal Display has long claimed that Samsung Display is its single largest customer, given the application of its OLED materials in Samsung's popular high-end Galaxy smartphones. Samsung’s latest device Samsung Galaxy S6 and its curved-edge alternative, the Galaxy S6 Edge witnessed a strong reception and surpassed its predecessors, which was good news for Universal.

The success or failure of these devices also impacts suppliers. Therefore, Universal Display’s destiny lies in the hands of these companies. If the high-end smartphones don’t fare well, Universal Display's most significant revenue stream stands to suffer. And if they do, it’ll be good news for the company. If Universal Display is chosen by Apple as the OLED technology provider, it will be a great achievement for the company.

Universal Display currently has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). Another stock worth considering in the industry is Kyocera Corp. (KYO - Snapshot Report), sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

AMOLED panels used in 20% of China smartphones sold during 1H15, says firm
Rebecca Kuo, Tainan; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Monday 3 August 2015]

Approximately 15 million of the smartphones sold in China during the first half of 2015 used AMOLED panels, up 19.9% on year, according to Sigmaintell Consulting.

Overall smartphone shipments in the China market during the first half reached 201 million, down 1.7% on year, of which around 15 million were AMOLED units to represent a 19.9% share. The firm said the use of AMOLED was more for strategic purposes to have differentiated products in the market as the China handset market is starting to cool down.

Heading into the second half of 2015, vendors are expected to release even more smartphones equipped with AMOLED, with most supply coming from Samsung Display. As of the first half, China vendors that have used AMOLED panels from Samsung include Vivo, Oppo, Coolpad, Lenovo, and ZTE in addition to others.

Despite the cooldown in the first half of 2015, the firm said it expects smartphone shipments in China to grow 7-10% on year in the second half, and that total smartphone shipments in China during 2015 will grow 3-5% on year to 405 million.

Universal Display surges amid Apple patent application, LG OLED TV buzz
Nov 19 2015, 12:36 ET | About: Universal Display Corporation (OLED) | By: Eric Jhonsa, SA News Editor

Universal Display (OLED +9.6%) is up 17% over the last two days.:) Possibly helping: The USPTO has published a patent application from Apple (has long been the subject of rumors it's testing/thinking of using OLEDs) for an integrated OLED display and touch panel, with a fingerprint reader underneath.

In the application, Apple states integrating an OLED stack and touch sensors on a silicon substrate "can allow for an extremely high number of pixels per inch," and that arranging OLED sub-pixels side-by-side with touch sensors "can also lead to a wider viewing angle display with a higher contrast ratio, higher brightness, and more vibrant colors without compromising touch sensitivity.

"Also: Reuters has published an article highlighting LG's recent OLED TV price cuts, made possible by recent production improvements and plant investments. Two sets now sell for less than $2K. LG Display (LPL +3.2%) recently promised to invest at least KRW10T ($8.5B) in OLED manufacturing through 2018.

Universal jumped two weeks ago after beating Q3 estimates and narrowing its full-year guidance. Shares are at their highest levels since August.

Japan's Nikkei reports Apple (AAPL -0.5%) will launch iPhones sporting OLED displays starting in 2018. To date, the company has exclusively used LCDs for its retina displays.

The paper adds securing enough OLEDs to meet Apple's needs (the company sells over 200M iPhones/year) could be difficult, and that Apple will "work over the next year or so" with suppliers to see if it can obtain enough displays and eliminate technical drawbacks such as performance degradation.

iPhone LCD supplier LG Display (LPL +6.9%), which has already unveiled plans to invest ~$8.5B in OLED manufacturing through 2018, is said to be "planning capacity upgrades." OLED materials/IP provider Universal Display (OLED +5.2%) have caught a bid on the Nikkei's report; LPL was already higher on the day.

OLEDs have long been a staple on Samsung's Galaxy S and Note lines. Supporters of the technology praise its high contrast/deep blacks and potential thickness and power consumption advantages. Apple, however, has argued its LCDs provide superior color accuracy.

There have long been rumors Apple is thinking of adopting OLEDs. The company recently filed a patent application for an integrated OLED display and touch panel, with a fingerprint reader located underneath.

Vicky Chou, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Friday 27 November 2015]

Apple has notified supply chains that it intends to switch to OLED panels for iPhones released in 2017-2018 and is calling on display makers in Korea and Japan to begin expanding production for the technology, according to a new report from Nikkei Asian Review that quoted supply chain sources in Japan.

The report said Apple is aiming to release iPhones with OLED in 2017 but may be forced to wait until 2018 depending on supply and yield issues. Apple has been reluctant to switch to OLED because of these factors, coupled with instability dealing with the lifespan, luminosity and energy-saving capabilities small- to medium-size OLED panels currently possess.

Apple has outlined its requirements in terms of expected specifications for the displays and supply needed to meet iPhone shipments, which are expected to continue surpassing the 200 million mark a year over the next few years, the report added.

Currently there are three main panel makers looking to compete for orders from Apple: LG Display, Japan Display (JDI) and JOLED. The report indicated that panel makers in Japan are highly concerned over Apple's reported decision since they mainly focus on LCD production and development, with LCDs accounting for roughly 80% of JDI's total business.

JDI and JOLED however are expected to increase cooperation in developing OLED, setting up new research facilities in 2016 in order to begin producing various samples. The makers expect to mass produce OLED by 2018, the report added.

Sharp may be significantly affected by Apple's move as the panel maker has currently not put much investment into developing OLED displays.

Meanwhile, reports from Korea have recently stated that Apple has been seriously considering OLED for upcoming iPhones and also reiterated a likely time-frame would fall between 2017-2018. The reports have also leaked information that LG Display is expected to increase capacity as well as construct new OLED facilities in order to meet demand, such as the recently reported P10 fab expected to enter mass production in 2017.

Chip equipment firms, OLED names outperform after Applied Materials' earnings
Lam Research (LRCX +4.1%), KLA-Tencor (KLAC +2.3%), ASML (ASML +2.2%), Axcelis (ACLS +3.9%), Kulicke & Soffa (KLIC +3%), Ultratech (UTEK +3.5%), Teradyne (TER +2.3%), Rudolph Technologies (RTEC +2.6%), and Xcerra (XCRA +2.7%) are outperforming after Applied Materials (AMAT +13.2%) beat FQ2 estimates, provided FQ3 guidance that was well above consensus, and reported FQ2 orders rose 52% Q/Q and 37% Y/Y to $3.45B. The Nasdaq is up 1.2%.

Applied's order growth was fueled in large part by display equipment orders totaling $700M, up sharply from $183M in the prior quarter and $120M a year ago. On its earnings call, AMAT said display order strength is likely to continue "over the rest of 2016," and is being driven by mobile-related OLED investments - many reports have indicated Apple plans to bring iPhones sporting OLEDs to market next year.

OLED materials/IP provider Universal Display (OLED +5.2%) is rallying. As are display panel makers LG Display (LPL +6.5%) and AU Optronics (AUO +3.2%), each of which have been stepping up their OLED investments, and industrial laser maker Coherent (COHR +2.5%), which has recently seen an OLED-related order surge.

Also: Applied's NAND flash-related orders more than doubled Y/Y to nearly $1B thanks to its customers' 3D NAND investments. That more than offset softer DRAM and foundry-related chip equipment demand. On the call, Applied suggested NAND orders will slow a bit in the second half of FY16, but remain strong overall. Foundry demand is expected to grow somewhat this year, with Applied gaining share. Industry wafer fab equipment demand is expected to be flat to slightly up.

      B. Riley has upgraded Applied to Buy, and several firms have hiked their targets. Cowen's Tim Arcuri thinks $3 in annual EPS is now possible. Credit Suisse's Farhan Ahmad: "AMAT is clearly outgrowing peers this year, driven by favourable mix shift within WFE (NAND/Foundry increasing, DRAM declining) and strong growth in Display (China/OLED investments)."

Universal Display soars on Apple-related Goldman upgrade
May 23 2016, 10:22 ET | About: Universal D... (OLED) | By: Eric Jhonsa, SA Eye on Tech, SA News Editor Contact this editor with comments or a news tip

"Given recent field work, we are increasingly confident on Apple’s [OLED] adoption potential and add this to our modeled estimates for 2017-2018," writes Goldman's Brian Lee, upgrading Universal Display (OLED +10.4%) to Buy and hiking his target by $21 to $76. "Specifically, Apple and Samsung analysts Simona Jankowski and Marcus Shin, expect roughly 33mn/113mn total iPhone shipments to use OLED displays, and this is a primary driver of our 4%/25% increase in F17/F18 EPS to $1.93/$2.70 for OLED."

His 2017 estimate is above a $1.64 consensus. Lee adds there could be a "hockey-stick" like increase in OLED use by phone OEMs in later years, and thinks Universal could eventually earn as much as $15/share in a "blue sky" scenario in which OLEDs are widely adopted for devices with larger displays, such as tablets and TV sets.

There have already been a slew of analyst and supply chain reports indicating Apple plans to launch iPhones sporting OLEDs next year. Universal rallied on Friday after Applied Materials reported a massive increase in display equipment orders that it attributed to mobile-related OLED equipment demand.

Shares are within $1 of a 52-week high of $63.00.

Apple (AAPL): Korea Trip Shows All iPhone OLED Coming From Samsung - UBS (OLED) (AMAT) (LPL)
      StreetInsider.com Top Tickers, 6/7/2016

      June 6, 2016 7:51 AM EDT

UBS analyst, Nicolas Gaudois was in Korea last week visiting OLED and Display supply chain companies. It is now clear that 100% of the edge OLED display supply for the first iPhone (NASDAQ: AAPL) adopting it in 2H17 will be from Samsung. LGD has been slower in qualifying. The analyst sees evidence that it remains a potential second source supplier for '18.

He also see growing interest from Chinese smartphones makers for edge-type OLED displays, which will benefit both LGD and Samsung, and contributes to Chinese panel makers prepping capacity. He continues to expect OLED to be the mainstream technology for smartphones displays by '20. TV adoption will be slower, but in spite of Samsung's current indecision, eventually, OLED will prevail in the high end.

Samsung is in the process of placing several gen 6 OLED equipment orders in 2Q, and recent filings suggest upside in the order sizes. More orders are expected in 2H16, and Samsung's A3 fab should reach its maximum capacity (120k spm) by end '17. LGD is prepping the second tranche of orders for E5 fab, with a subsequent decision on capacity allocation for Apple expected by 3Q. Equipment vendors have visibility on coming orders from Tianma and Visionox, after BOE earlier on, and less clarity on Truly and EDO.

The firm continues to favor OLED winners versus LCD legacy. While the firm recently lowered their price target on LG Display (NYSE: LPL), they continue to view the stock as an under-valued OLED play. They also initiated on Wonik IPS in the equipment space with a Buy - while Applied Materials (NASDAQ: AMAT) (Buy) recent results supported their positive stance.

SI NOTE: While not mentioned, the report should be positive for Samsung OLED partner Universal Display Corp. (NASDAQ: OLED).

      OLED: Material Lieferant
      LG: Paneel Hersteller

"However, Asensio is convinced that impending patent expirations and extensive OLED competition will soon reduce UDC to a bit player in the OLED market. He believes currently soaring OLED stock it destined to trade much lower.

OLED panels are made from organic (carbon based) materials that emit light when electricity is applied through them. Unlike LCD displays which require a backlight to produce images, each pixel in an OLED display creates its own light. OLED displays are more efficient, simpler to make, and much thinner. In fact, the tech world is abuzz about flexible, and even rollable OLED designs under development.

If reports are accurate and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) introduces its first OLED iPhone this fall, Universal Display will benefit via its licensing and supply agreements with Samsung. Apple has reportedly already placed large orders for OLED screens with Samsung."

Deutsche Bank Sets Lofty Target For Universal Display

Universal Display stock is up 5% to trade at $116.71, after Deutsche Bank initiated coverage with a "buy" rating, as well as a price target of $135. The new target implies expected upside of about 16% from OLED's current price, and stands in uncharted territory for the stock. The security has more than doubled year-to-date, and is now on pace to take back the all-important 50-day moving average.

LG and Samsung invest EUR25 million in OLED material developer Cynora
Rodney Chan, DIGITIMES, Taipei [Thursday 14 September 2017]

Cynora, a Germany-based provider of organic emitter materials for OLEDs, has announced that the LG and Samsung have decided to invest EUR25 million (US$29.72 million) in the company.

Cynora said it is developing a new type of organic emitting materials for OLED displays based on TADF (thermally activated delayed fluorescence) technology. With this technology, Cynora said it will be able to commercialize the first high-efficiency blue emitting material on the market, which is the most sought-after material by OLED display makers. High-performance blue materials will enable a significant reduction of power consumption and allow higher display resolution, according to the company.

LG Display and Samsung Venture Investment Corporation (Samsung Ventures) have decided to invest EUR25 million in a Series-B round to support the German company in the development of a portfolio of organic emitting materials for AMOLED displays that covers the full range of colors. The new shareholders will join the existing investors MIG, Wecken & Cie and KfW, Cynora said.

LG Display and Samsung Display, both major companies in display technologies, will engage each with Cynora via this investment and separate joint developments to advance Cynora's R&D and its IP portfolio.

"I am delighted to welcome LG Display and Samsung Ventures as Cynora's shareholders," said Gildas Sorin, Cynora's CEO, as cited in a company press release. "This investment confirms that our materials are highly attractive for the OLED display industry. Cynora will work in close collaboration with LG and Samsung to support their respective activities. The cash injection will also be used to strengthen our worldwide presence as a supplier of high-efficiency emitting materials. We will commercialize our first blue product by the end of 2017, followed by green and red."

Growing use of AMOLED panels in premium TVs and smartphones will drive the OLED panel market to reach US$75 billion, with a CAGR of 31%, in sales by 2021, Cynora cited UBI Research as indicating.

Founded in 2008, Cynora, with its TADF technology, said it currently focuses on high-efficiency blue OLED emitting materials, but has plans to offer materials of all colors by 2019. Cynora has established representation in Korea and China and is working closely with its customers on material and device development.

How Universal Display Corporation Is Stacking the Deck Against the Competition
newsfeedback@fool.com (Maxx Chatsko) Oct 29, 2017 Updated 12 hrs ago

How Universal Display Corporation Is Stacking the Deck Against the Competition
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. If you can beat them, however, make sure they know it, and then convert them to customers.

That's basically become the growth strategy for Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ: OLED) -- and one that's difficult to argue with. The materials leader reported 68% year-over-year revenue growth in the first half of 2017. Earnings per share soared 137% in the same span. How is everything seemingly going right for the growth stock?

Simply put, Universal Display is stacking the deck against the competition by turning the gatekeepers of older-generation display technologies into its most important customers and partners.

Big bet, big moves, big growth
Having a superior display technology certainly, helps to fuel the company's growth strategy. Organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs, offer higher-definition displays, reduced energy consumption, less wasted energy in the form of heat (they're cool to the touch), and more even light distribution compared to LED materials. They can be used for display screens in smartphones and televisions and even in lighting applications ranging from traditional light bulbs to ultra-thin and flexible light-emitting "sheets," for lack of a better word.

In other words, OLEDs appear to be the next logical step in the continuum of display and lighting technologies. In display applications, the technology arc has progressed from cathode ray tubes to plasma to liquid crystal displays (LCD) to LEDs (and is beginning to transition) to OLEDs. In lighting applications, this has recently progressed from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescents to LEDs (and soon) to OLEDs.

But there's much more to Universal Display's success than having a superior technology. For starters, it made its initial bets on OLED technology all the way back in 1997 by funding a research grant with Princeton University -- well before even LCDs or compact fluorescents were widely available. That early start allowed the company to amass its current portfolio of 4,200 issued and pending patents worldwide.

Because OLEDs ended up being a superior technology (it didn't have to turn out that way), and because Universal Display never wavered in its technical hunch, it's now nearly impossible for any display or lighting company to use OLEDs without first talking to the materials leader.

Major customers and growth drivers in displays include Samsung Display, LG Display, Apple, Panasonic, Sony, and the like. Importantly, these companies used to or currently do rely on competing for older display technologies such as LCD and LED. As they convert to OLED en masse, they'll continue to drive Universal Display stock higher.

There's a similar -- if not larger -- opportunity for OLED lighting, although it's earlier in the development process. Nonetheless, it could become a $1.9 billion market in 2021 and a $5.8 billion market by 2025. That means those 4,200 patents will prove pretty valuable for the foreseeable future.

What does it mean for investors?
Shareholders have been in a state of pure bliss with the recent performance of Universal Display stock. It's tough to argue with five-year returns of 323%, after all. While growth should continue for the foreseeable future, there are rumblings that OLED smartphone displays are suffering from burn-in. That occurs when certain objects that regularly appear on the screen (for example, the top menu bar displaying time, notifications, and network activity) seem to be permanently displayed on the screen. It could be a risk to the expansion of OLEDs if the problems are as bad and widespread as initially reported.

On the same note, there will come a day when OLEDs are the "old" technology for both displays and lighting. In fact, one of Universal Display's largest customers is already banking on it.

Of course, that day is still far away. So assuming screen burn-in is much ado about nothing, this could be the era of OLEDs -- and this stock is the only game in town.

But: "The best is yet to come" - Zitat Felix Grawert.

      blue Emitter system
      hab was interessantes entdeckt.

      https://www.oled-info.com/udc-our-rgb1b2-amoled-architecture…

With multiple customers who have numerous product roadmaps for a myriad of end users, the discovery, development and delivery of new phosphorescent emissive materials, including new reds, greens, yellows and blues continues to be our highest priority. Specifically on the blue front, we continue to make excellent progress in our ongoing development work for commercial phosphorescent blue emissive system.

      Mehdi Hosseini

Great. Thank you. And then a follow-up – a quick follow-up. How should we think about the commercialization of blue? Any incremental update?

      Steven Abramson

We don’t really have any incremental update. We’re continuing to make excellent progress on blue. And when we – we’re making excellent progress. We have nothing to announce at the moment.

      Mehdi Hosseini

Is there any lifetime metric that we could use to better help us? Any progress?

      Steven Abramson

At this point, I don’t think it’s a metric. It’s key, because as you know, there are the three points as the color, efficiency and lifetime, and the customers are looking at the appropriate combination for their business.

      Sidney Rosenblatt

Yes. And Mehdi, as we said, we’re not going to be making project – discussions about incremental improvements that we make, because we make them all the time. And we make them, as Steve said, across the Board, whether it’s color, lifetime or efficiency. But when we have something that we believe it meets initial commercial specs, that’s when we’ll start sharing information.
