      Alternative Investing
      ----------------------
Don`t be a slave to your stock broker. Stocks can make great investments, but are not the only choice. The wise investor diversifies her portfolio. The Web can introduce you to alternative investments--things that aren`t even on your broker`s radar. Hydrogen fuel-cells, gold and timber may be esoteric, but there are many other ways you can put your money to work besides in the stock market.

      Bonds
      ------
A whole generation of investors has grown up thinking stocks are the only sensible investment. Who wanted bonds, with their measly 6% to 8% yields? People forgot that in a tax-sheltered IRA, money doubles every nine years if invested at 8% and does so dependably. They seem unaware that there are times when junk bonds do much better than stocks-as in 1990-93. After last year`s Nasdaq debacle, people began rediscovering bonds. For those who want to broaden their investment skills by learning about fixed-income investing.

      Financial Portals
      ------------------
The theory sounds great: Find one single "financial portal" that offers you everything you need to manage your money on the Web. There should be unbiased investment advice, real-time summaries of your stock portfolio, your checking account balance, even your credit card balance and phone bill. And, of course, lots of links to other sources of online finance information. The problem is, if you really want the best the Web has to offer, no single portal will do. Some offer a few top-of-the-line features. Others offer fresh editorial content and paths to other finance sites. When choosing a portal, be wary of the editorial integrity of its advice. Many make money from funneling users to financial institutions.

      Guard Dogs
      -----------
Let`s face it: The Web has a dark side. With a click of a mouse, fraudsters can reach tens of thousands of people by email. On-line touts purporting to provide independent analysis shill for promoters and official-sounding press releases spout bogus claims. You best protection is to be skeptical about all claims and refuse to act on any information unless you know and trust the source. And if the promotion involves a publicly traded company, do yourself a favor and check it out with Stock Detective.

      Hyperactive Traders
      --------------------
Thought to be passe by many, day trading is still an option. As firms such as Morgan Stanley have learned, the active trader not only still exists but is growing in number. The result has been a surge of big-name interest in day trading, bringing the once-marginalized sector of the industry into the mainstream, and making these uncertain times truly heady days for the active trader. If you decide to gamble with your savings, do it intelligently. Our advice: If you make at least one trade per day, consider using one of the nonbrowser-based systems listed. It could give you an advantage.

      IPO-s
      ------
According to Renaissance Capital, the average initial public offering gained 187% in 1999 but this is a historical fluke: Over long periods, IPOs don`t fare very well. But if you want to play in the game--we don`t especially recommend it--here`s a place to start. Most don`t give you a crack at the hot stocks but do keep you informed on what`s cooking. Some boil down IPO prospectuses for easy reading and some sites let you track aftermarket performance by underwriter. On many of the sites you will find a New IPO Alert feature, offering e-mail notification when a company goes public. You can`t buy or sell on most of these sites and they won`t help you get into the hot IPOs !

      International Investing
      ------------------------
The Web has made the world a lot smaller. The complications of time zones, currency conversions and receipt of dividend payments are manageable using online calculators and Java applications. The best place to start is at general portals devoted to foreign markets. But the beauty of the Web is its ability to drill down to information on specific niches, so don`t overlook the smaller specialized sites.

      Market Data
      ------------
Financial information that used to require a $570 subscription to the Value Line Investment Survey or a trip to the public library is now free and at your fingertips on dozens of Web sites. That`s great for those who make their own investment decisions. But what about those who want advice and opinions from analysts? The Web can help there too, though the information is less likely to be free.

      Message Boards
      ---------------
Not long ago, day traders ruled the stock message boards. But with fewer hot stocks to hype, the boards have mellowed, and on some you can even find sophisticated opinions and useful tidbits. Use these sites to gauge sentiment, but be wary of stock recommendations.

      ------------

      -------
The Web caters to special interests in a way that print publications simply cannot match. Are you into biotech, gold mining companies or company-sponsored dividend reinvestment plans? There is probably a specialty Web site out there for you. A word of caution: Many niche sites are run by hawkers and promoters. !!! Read the fine print !!!

      Options
      --------
Options trading is not for the faint of heart, but Web resources can give you the confidence to play the game. Log on for easily programmed Black-Scholes option-pricing calculators, as well as quotes, charts and plenty of investor education. As in other Web investment niches, scammers and promoters abound. Many promising-looking options sites are in fact nothing more than shills. Before signing up for an options strategy service, we recommend using the free trial periods typically offered.

      Small Caps
      -----------
Small cap companies--typically those with market capitalization less that $1 billion--are pretty well neglected these days. Web sites devoted to these stocks provide news, research and company information. But beware -a number of sites collect fees from the small companies for coverage that may look like " unbiased editorial ".

      Stock Pickers
      --------------
Whether you`re a diehard believer in technical analysis, New Era investing or Graham & Dodd, there`s lots of stuff out there for you. New online stock-picking communities are cropping up every month, and among the amateurs you will find some who are either very smart or very lucky. The wise investor-are there still any out there?-will not be satisfied with the tips but will also want analysis. At their best, these sites provide clear and accurate performance data, instead of just trumpeting their winners, and have simple methods for back-testing results. At their worst they are traps for the unwary, set by pump-and-dump operators.

      Technology News
      ----------------
Besides providing quality coverage, an ideal tech site should exploit online tools--links, real-time updates, email alerts, etc. By and large, they don`t. To get the best from this category, diversify. Bookmark your favorite sites in each of five categories: daily stock news, breaking headlines, tech-specific sites, insider scoop and features/analysis. Value Stocks

      Venture Investing
      ------------------
Ordinary investors are miffed that big institutions and high rollers get first crack at hot private deals. They want to play, too. A number of online firms now promise a seat at the table for anyone with Web access and modest affluence. If you`ve got a household net worth of $1 million and can invest at least $25,000, the sites will let you download business plans, examine financials, view video interviews and even approach entrepreneurs directly. Unfortunately, all these sites are unproven. They have no real track record. Nor do they level the playing field as much as they claim to. Garage.com and Yazam select investors based on the experience and contacts they can contribute, as well as by their ability to cough up the hefty minimums.

      Wall Street Research
      ----------------------
Even if you don`t buy their Buy ratings, Wall Street analysts` opinions do move stock prices. Luckily, their research is now easily accessible on the Web. Aggregators like Multex save you time because you no longer have to visit the site of each brokerage house to find the reports. Punch in a ticker and up they come. Other aggregators will let you listen to audio clips of analyst meetings and conference calls. Many of the reports from the big-name brokers, like Morgan Stanley, cost extra to download. However, free stuff--of varying quality--is available from smaller boutiques. You`ll also find financial news, charts, e-mail alerts and stock screeners.
