CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (CBS.MW) -- Akamai Technologies Inc. pulled off a lower-than-expected loss Thursday, beating estimates by 4 cents.
The content delivery company reported a pro forma net loss of $46.8 million, or 46 cents per share, compared with a loss of $52.5 million, or 53 cents a share, during the same quarter last year.
Analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial were looking for a loss of 50 cents a share, on average.
Actual net loss was $92.6 million, or 91 cents a share, compared with a year-ago loss of $243.2 million, or $2.78 a share for the Cambridge, Mass.-based firm.
Quarterly revenue more than doubled, coming in at $43.1 million, compared with $18.1 million during the same quarter a year ago.
Akamai (AKAM: news, chart, profile) ended the quarter with cash and equivalents of $267.1 million, down from $313.1 million at the end of the previous quarter.
"We delivered the numbers in a challenging macro environment. Revenue and gross profit are up and operating expenses and capital expenditures have continued to drop as a percentage of revenue," said Chief Financial Officer Timothy Weller in a company press release.
Shares of Akamai closed down 68 cents, or 7.9 percent at $7.96, ahead of the earnings release.
