happy trading

Every time I look at the latest stock market closing.
Are we doomed?
---> Hey, lighten up, man. Sure, the
broad stock market is down roughly
20 percent from its high last March and the
Nasdaq -- well, that`s been a real sob
story -- has crashed more than 60
percent. But bear markets aren`t exactly unheard of in the
financial world. (For details on how many bear markets we`ve
had and how long they`ve lasted, click here.)
We don`t know enough to predict exactly when bears will
occur. But one thing we do know is that -- so far at least --
new bulls have always been born from bears. And when those
new bulls arrive, they hit the ground moving. If you flee stocks
for the safety of Treasury bills, chances are you`ll miss the
biggest gains.
From the fall of 1980 through the summer of 1982, for
example, stocks suffered a 27 percent decline that lasted 21
months. From the beginning of August 1982 through the end of
the 1980s, stocks exploded for an annualized return of 22.2
percent. If you`d been in Treasuries for the first year of that
rebound before getting back on the stocks bandwagon, you`re
average gain would have been only 16 percent.
I`m not saying the next upswing will be that strong. After all,
stocks today aren`t as cheap as they were in the early 1980s.
But in terms of expected returns, the prospects are certainly a
lot brighter today than they were back when the market was
at its peak in early 2000.
Now, do I know when the next turnaround will come? Of
course not. But I do see some encouraging signs, like the
index of leading economic indicators, which has risen for three
straight months. In an iffy economy like this one, good news
one week can be followed by bad news the next, but all I can
suggest is that you cheer up and hang in there.
