Juni 2001 – Tiscali S.p.A.

      Pan-European Availability:
TiscaliSat will be available virtually everywhere in Europe, so you can control your Internet access options regardless of how far away you live from the nearest telephone exchange or cable node.

      A Future of Multicast Capability:
As a TiscaliSat customer you will have the opportunity to be part of a unique satellite multicast network. This means that in the future, you will be able to direct your PC to receive channels of high-quality content from top entertainment and information partners, including MP3 files, software downloads, audio and video content and more.

      How does TiscaliSat work…

TisacaliSat consists of a 75cm elliptical satellite dish mounted on or near your home or office. The dish must have a clear unobstructed view of the southern sky. Two standard coaxial cables connect the satellite dish antenna to a TisacaliSat modem.

The antenna both sends requests to the Internet and receives Internet content via the satellite, which is in orbit pproximately 36,000 km above the equator. The satellite communicates with the TisacaliSat groundstation, which has a very fast connection to the Internet.

Inside your residence, the TisacaliSat system consists of a satellite modem that attaches to your home PC through a USB port. No telephone connection, is needed. Tiscali is all you need. Both the indoor and outdoor satellite equipment used by the Tiscali service is provided by Gilat Satellite Networks, a worldwide leader in satellite networking technology. For more information about Gilat, please visit www.gilat.com

TiscaliSat is a Broadband IP star network (one central hub and many remote sites). The hub transmits a DVB outbound signal to the many remote VSAT modems, and it receives inbound signals from the VSATs.

The satellite modem connects to the PC via a USB port. The modem receives the DVB signal at rates ranging from 150kbps up to 500kbps and it transmits at rates of up to 150kbps. When users browse the Internet, they generate bursty traffic, which is handled through contention mode. File uploads, which require longer uninterrupted access use dedicated bandwidth. At the hub, specialized servers support Broadband IP and performance enhancement applications such as TCP optimization, QoS and the Internet Page Acceleration (A Gilat Satellite Networks feature).

      How much does TiscaliSat cost…

      High-Speed:
TiscaliSat downloads at speeds up to ten times faster than dial-up services. Speeds will often reach 400 kbps with targeted peak-time speeds in excess of 150 kbps. Current upload speeds range between 40 kbps and 140kbps.

This means that in the future, you will be able to direct your PC to receive channels of high-quality content from top entertainment and information partners, including MP3 files, software downloads, subscription content and more.
      How much does StarBand cost?
StarBand pricing is comprised of an ongoing monthly fee for unlimited high-speed Internet usage plus a one-time equipment fee for the StarBand satellite modem. Professional installation by a certified StarBand installer is also required.

Pricing for these fees is at the sole discretion of the authorized distribution partners selling the StarBand service. There are a number of authorized distributors of the StarBand service, including DISH Network and Primus Telecommunications, and each may elect to offer a special pricing bundle that may vary from time to time. Please contact these companies directly in order to get the most up-to-date StarBand Internet pricing information being offered.

The suggested retail price, which again may vary at the sole discretion of the distribution partner, includes $499 for the StarBand Model 360 equipment package. This includes both the indoor and outdoor equipment to get standalone StarBand service up and running. The price for installation varies based on each customer`s requirements; however, the suggested basic, standard installation starts at $199. Monthly unlimited service fees vary based on the value-added products and services included with any potential bundled offer; however, StarBand Internet is suggested to start at $69.99 per month.

Suggested pricing information is based on a pricing survey completed on July 26, 2001. Pricing is subject to change at any time at the sole discretion of the distribution partner.
