      Press Release

German Market Taking Steps in Direction of Interactive TV

Fantastic Corporation provides software as Digital Video Broadcasting begins to replace analog PAL-TV in Germany.

Zug, Switzerland and Berlin, Germany - August 22, 2001 - DVB-T is ready to replace analog television in Germany. This is the conclusion resulting out of trials conducted by the Independent State Media Commissions of Lower Saxony, Bremen and Hamburg, the public service broadcasting stations Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), Radio Bremen (RB) and Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF) as well as Deutsche Telekom AG (DTAG) in parts of Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen). The interim report of that DVB-T project, which will be available at the booth of ZDF at the Internationale Funkaustellung (IFA) 2001 in Berlin, reveals data about technical performance and costs for setting up DVB-T transmissions. The Fantastic Corporation, provided the platform for data services for the trial project initiated in 1998 and still running today. The project partners and technology advisors concluded that rapid introduction of the digital terrestrial television standard in Germany is possible. According to the "Launch Scenario 2000" presented by the German Federal Ministry of Economics, DVB-T is planned to replace analog transmitters completely by the year 2010.
The German approach to DVB-T transmission is unique as it aims at stationary, portable and mobile reception. Portable reception requires a so-called "portable indoor" antenna located directly at the end receiving devices. Beyond supplying the software technology for data broadcasting, Fantastic played a key role in solving technical details during field operations. According to the DVB-T report, the first test objective, integrating multimedia content of partners into test operations, was successfully achieved just shortly after the project launch.
For the partners of the DVB-T trial it made sense to work with a network-independent broadcasting platform, as it is suitable for business-to-consumer and business-to-business applications. Based on Internet standards, Fantastic software enables the aggregation, packaging, managing, broadcasting and viewing of TV and CD-quality multimedia content. Fantastic software allows the distribution of large amount of data content over broadband IP networks, such as digital terrestrial, cable, satellite, Wireless Local Loop, xDSL, to any IP enabled device, for example PC, Personal Digital Assistant and other mobile devices.
With DVB-T, up to 24 television programs will be broadcasted in Germany. Additionally, services such as radio programs, multimedia city guides or specific business channels as well as Internet connectivity may be provided. Entire computer programs, music in CD quality and movies in DVD quality can be downloaded quickly making DVB-T not only a means for television and radio, but offering the basis for a multimedia home or car platform. The portable indoor antenna is independent of cable or satellite and allows perfect reception at home or in cars, trains, or buses.
"As promised, this is the year that the hardware and content industry makes a multimedia home platform a reality", said Professor Ulrich Reimers, project director technology of the DVB-T trial. "We have relied heavily on our technical partners including Fantastic, who provided us with a technical trial platform for distributing content."
"We see the success of the DVB-T project as a clear indication that the consumer and business markets are ready for digital broadcasting. Our software provides new revenue opportunities across the broadcast value chain enabling all participants, content providers, service providers, and end-users to benefit from the economy of scale," said Reto Braun, Chairman and CEO of Fantastic.
Fantastic software enables providers and aggregators to precisely control what content is delivered, the type of delivery, to which communities it is delivered, and when it is delivered. Network operators can benefit from increased and more efficient bandwidth usage, and the ability to offer and bill for new services over new and exiting network infrastructures. Consumer end users benefit from a new, attractive form of interactive entertainment or information.
The DVB-T report can be obtained from Fantastic.
