Check Point Software expects to meet Q3 estimates
(UPDATE: Updates with more details, background, stock moves)

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Oct 3 (Reuters) - Israeli Internet security company Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NasdaqNM:CHKP - news), citing the Sept. 11 attacks, said on Wednesday it expects to meet current Wall Street estimates for its third quarter profits, despite a drop in revenue for September.

The company said it anticipates meeting current earnings-per-share expectations of 28 cents to 29 cents, while revenues for the quarter are expected to be $117 million to $118 million.

Check Point, which sells software for protecting corporate networks from malicious hackers and other intrusions, said it experienced an ``interruption in business`` following the tragic events of Sept. 11, which resulted in an estimated revenue reduction of $15 million to $20 million for the quarter.

Like most software providers, which do a lot of their business for the quarter in September, Check Point lost a week of sales during that period, a company spokesman said.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call had, on average, forecast revenues of $130.84 million for the quarter, which ended Sept. 30.

``Though Check Point`s revenues were impacted in the quarter, we achieved strong earnings and continued to experience a high level of business activity,`` Gil Shwed, the company`s chief executive, said in a statement.

``During this time, the company recorded an impressive number of competitive and architectural wins, reinforcing our belief that security remains important to company`s around the world and that Check Point is well positioned in this market,`` he added.

For the year, analysts are forecasting earnings of $1.26 a share and revenue of $555.43 million. Check Point did not give any guidance for the fiscal year.

On Sept. 10 company President Jerry Ungerman told Reuters that he was comfortable with guidance given in July for full-year revenue growth of between 30 percent and 50 percent.

Shares in security technology providers initially saw a boost in their stocks immediately following the attacks but have dropped recently as investors returned to focus on the risks of global economic slowdown.

Analysts have lowered their revenue growth projections for companies in the sector by an average of 8 percent.

Check Point, which is based in Tel Aviv and has U.S. headquarters in Redwood City, California, will report its third-quarter results on Oct. 18.

Shares in Check Point closed the day up 13.74 percent, or $3.14, at $25.99.
