Oooooder:confused:
      Wie seht ihr das?

      Analysts` comments lag market

      By Matt Krantz, USA TODAY

The bear market has taught investors that they can get seriously burned paying attention to analysts` "buy" ratings. But what they may not know is that they can also get singed when analysts finally slap a negative rating on a stock.

Research performed for USA TODAY found that the number of negative ratings hit a 5-year high just before the market started to rebound in early April.

In March, 35% of analysts` recommendations were a "sell" or "hold," up from 23% at the market`s peak a year earlier. Remember that on Wall Street, hold really means sell. But the Nasdaq`s 35% gain since its April 4 low makes it appear analysts hit a bearish extreme just as the market was about to rebound. Anybody who acted on that advice not only sold at the bottom, but also lost out on the gains since.

"The analyst recommendations lagged the stock prices," says David Lichtblau of StarMine, the firm that tracks analysts` ratings and conducted the study.

Of course, the market could always plunge again, and there is much more information in analysts` reports than just the rating. But consider what happened in cases where analysts turned bearish:

      • Four analysts had a "buy" on Inktomi at the end of January when the stock was $16.69. By the time the shares had sunk to $2.79 in April, three of those same analysts had downgraded the stock to "hold" or "neutral," and one took it to a rare "sell." Anybody who sold on those downgrades missed out as the shares rose 246% to $9.65.

Banc of America Securities` Kevin Trosian maintained his "buy" on the stock even after management warned of disappointing fourth-quarter revenue. He downgraded to "market performer" April 3 after management said the first quarter would also be ugly. That day the stock hit its low. Trosian, who doubts the recent run-up will last, says his rating was intended to warn that risks remain high.

      • Luke Fichthorn of Lazard Freres started 2001 with a "buy" on Akamai, when shares were $19.75. On April 5, when the stock had dropped to $7.50, he cut to a "hold." Shares are up 23% to $9.25 since then. He declined comment.

      • Two analysts rated BroadVision either a "buy" or "strong buy" at the end of January, when shares were at $13.44. But by the time shares were down to $4.50 April 2 and $2.97 April 3, those analysts went to "hold" ratings. BroadVision is at $5.75, up 27% from April 2 and 94% since April 3.

One of the analysts to downgrade BroadVision in April was David Hilal of Friedman Billings Ramsey. On April 3, he cut his rating on the Internet software firm to a "market perform," the equivalent of a hold or neutral. Hilal says the rating is justified because the company still faces near-term challenges and the tech recovery is going to take longer than people think.

Analysts turning bearish can be useful as contrary indicators, says Zachary Scheidt of Piedmont Investment Advisory. "If nothing else negative can be said it may be a good time to buy," he says.
