Scottish Power Workforce Takes AvantGo Mobile Solutions Into the Wilds

      SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 2001--

Proven Solution Provides Mobile Access to Corporate Data from PDAs

in any Area - With or Without Network Coverage

AvantGo, Inc., (NASDAQ: AVGO) the leading provider of mobile infrastructure software and services, today announced that
international energy group Scottish Power plc is arming a cross-section of managers with a mobile business
intelligence solution from AvantGo, Inc. before sending them into remote regions that may not have cellular network coverage.

The new solution uses the award-winning AvantGo(R) M-Business Server software to enable workers to access business-critical
data from the corporate network using Compaq iPAQ personal digital assistants (PDAs). The solution allows access to information
both in real-time via a wireless connection, or in `no-coverage` areas, where they can work offline from data stored on the device
following synchronization with a desktop PC. Initially, ScottishPower is concentrating on the benefits of this off-line functionality,
although real-time access will certainly follow.

AvantGo`s key project deliverable was a corporate directory of over 3,000 names with job descriptions, contact information and
photographs. Other trial data includes Emergency Planning information and detailed weather forecasts. The solution also allows
individual managers to restrict the information delivered to the device on a departmental or team level, helping to ensure that memory
usage is optimized with relevant data only and sensitive information is only available to authorized personnel.

David Socha for ScottishPower, said: "The understanding that we could derive major benefits from mobilizing our corporate data was
already pretty clear, but following severe gales in parts of Scotland at the beginning of the year, we had a new urgency to deliver. With
managers dealing with incidents all over the country, access to information from the corporate network in the field can bring huge
gains in productivity, efficiency and safety.

"With its wireless and offline capabilities, the AvantGo solution was an obvious choice bearing in mind the remote areas we work in.
This sort of dynamic access to information is one of the key reasons we`re looking at using AvantGo`s solution to mobilize more of our
web-based business applications and to extend them to other parts of the company."

Steve Swatman, Vice President of Sales, AvantGo EMEA, commented: "Our solution for ScottishPower highlights how utility
companies with large mobile workforces are ideally placed to realize a fast return from investment in mobile technology. As with similar
AvantGo solutions at BG Group plc and Con Edison, the ScottishPower application cuts down paper-based documentation and
reporting to provide field-based employees with the information they need wherever they are."

AvantGo 4.0 M-Business Server software offers users of Palm OS, Windows-Powered Pocket PC and RIM Wireless Handheld(TM)
devices instant access to networked applications and Web content, either wirelessly, or via their normal synchronization process with
a desktop PC. Comprising server and client applications, the mobile solution automatically consolidates, compresses and transfers
      essential information for mobile access.

R/Ga Teams With Ralston Purina to Develop New Mobile Application

      October 16, 2001 09:00:00 (ET)

NEW YORK, Oct 16, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Ralston Purina and R/GA
today announced the launch of Purina(R) "Catchow.com to Go!," a new
mobile experience that is available on any mobile device via the AvantGo
      mobile Internet service.

This newly created mobile channel allows cat owners to access new
content from Purina Cat Chow`s popular Web site, www.catchow.com
      .

R/GA developed the "Catchow.com to Go!" channel with Purina to expand
and enhance the relationship and interactivity between Purina Cat Chow
and the growing number of cat enthusiasts who own PDA devices. Cat
lovers can now access content featured in the popular "Cat Care Library",
"Cat Tips," "Kitten Care," and "Your Mentor Program" sections of
catchow.com from their mobile devices. They also can send questions to
the Purina Cat Chow Mentors, a panel of feline experts, who will send
      responses via e-mail.

"Purina Cat Chow`s goal is to enhance the cat-owning experience by
providing cat lovers with the ultimate network of resources to care for their
cats` physical, emotional and nutritional health during all life stages," said
Michael D. Moore, Director of Global Interactive, Purina Interactive Group.
"This exciting mobile solution is another example of the innovative ways in
which Purina is using state-of-the-art technology to provide pet
enthusiasts with the information they need, when and where they want it."

There are two additional sections featured in the "Catchow.com to Go!"
channel that are devoted to specific areas of interest among cat owners.
"Travel With Your Cat" provides travel-related articles such as how to
prepare your cat for travel and tips on how to make car trips easier. This
will be an expanding database, whose content will increase over time. The
"Kitten Center" contains a feature article and Purina(R) Kitten Chow(R)
Mentor Q&A section to help provide new owners with the nutrition and
complete care information they need during their kittens` first years of life.

The mobile experience is integrated with the Purina(R) Cat Chow(R) Way of
Life(TM) Tour, a traveling community of resources that provides free
education, information and training to cat enthusiasts around the country.
The touring exhibit, which is visiting 30 cities across the U.S. in 2001,
features free training demonstrations for kittens, cats and mature felines; an
entertaining Interactive area that includes computer kiosks so visitors can
experience the catchow.com Web site; a cat adoption center with a local
shelter; and the team of Purina Cat Chow mentors who are available to offer
counsel and advice to cat owners and enthusiasts.

"R/GA is dedicated to delivering user experiences that are both creative
and groundbreaking," according to Dawn Winchester, Vice President of
Client Services at R/GA. "`Catchow.com to Go!` is an exciting project where
we were able to integrate the redesign of CatChow.com with the AvantGo
      mobile solution."

The Purina Cat Chow Web site, which was redesigned by R/GA and
re-launched in March 2000, brings the brand experience to life by offering
an online community of resources on complete cat care to cat enthusiasts
around the world. Ralston Purina has been an R/GA client since October
      1999.

Ralston Purina Company is a premier manufacturer of pet products and a
leading manufacturer of cat box filler.
