ViroLogic, Inc. (ticker: VLGC, exchange: NASDAQ) News Release - 16-Oct-2001

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ViroLogic Announces Broadened Agreement With Roche and Trimeris for Use of Its HIV Drug Resistance Testing Technology

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- ViroLogic, Inc. (Nasdaq: VLGC) today announced that the Company signed an expanded agreement with Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc. and Trimeris, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRMS) to use ViroLogic`s proprietary HIV resistance testing technology in the development of T-20 and T-1249, the first and most advanced members of a new class of antiviral agents known as fusion inhibitors. Fusion inhibitors are part of a broader class of antiviral agents collectively referred to as entry inhibitors that block binding to or fusion with target cells.

Under the terms of the agreement, Roche and Trimeris will immediately begin using ViroLogic`s newly-developed proprietary entry inhibitor assays to evaluate their investigational HIV drugs, T-20, currently being tested in Phase III clinical trials, and T-1249, currently being tested in a Phase I/II clinical trial. ViroLogic is the only company with the complete range of technology and capabilities to conduct entry inhibitor resistance testing.[..]

      Gruss an alle VLGCs

      @js200:

Na, war wohl nichts mit vorbörslichen Quartalszahlen! Also abwarten!
      Bzgl. Deiner Anfrage:

      Scios:
Interessante Firma, 3 Produkte auf dem Markt, 6 in der Entwicklung. Also kommt schon einmal gut Geld in die Firmenkasse.

      Press Release
      SOURCE: ViroLogic, Inc.
ViroLogic Announces Third Quarter 2001 Financial Results
Patient Testing Business Continues to Grow Steadily; Third Quarter Revenue Temporarily Affected by Tragic Events of September 11th and Variability Of Clinical Trial Timing
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- ViroLogic, Inc. (Nasdaq: VLGC - news) today reported financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2001. The Company reported revenue of $4.4 million for the quarter, an increase of 134 percent over revenue of $1.9 million for the same period in 2000. Third quarter revenue was temporarily affected by the tragic events of September 11th and variable timing of pharmaceutical clients` clinical trials.

``Despite the effects of September 11th, we are pleased with our performance this quarter, particularly our patient testing business, which continues to grow steadily each quarter,`` said Bill Young, ViroLogic`s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. ``Our business is now back on track, and we expect a solid fourth quarter with record revenue of over $6 million. In addition, with several new products being introduced over the next six to 12 months and an increasingly favorable insurance reimbursement environment for patient resistance testing, we continue to expect to achieve profitability by the end of 2002.``

The Company also announced that the Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BC/BS) Association has established a medical policy for HIV phenotyping, making it a coverable benefit. This policy is significant because most of the BC/BS plans nationwide, which cover about 25 percent of privately insured HIV/AIDS patients, follow the policies put forth by the Association.

Gross margin improved to 36 percent in the third quarter of 2001 compared to 31 percent during the second quarter and 34 percent reported during the same quarter last year. Operating expenses for the third quarter were $11.1 million, compared to $8.4 million for the same period in 2000. The increase primarily reflects additional expansion of clinical laboratory operations, sales and marketing activities and corporate infrastructure. Net loss for the quarter was $6.6 million, or $0.33 per share, compared to a net loss of $5.9 million, or $0.30 per share, for the same period in 2000.

During the third quarter of 2001, the Company recorded a deemed dividend to preferred shareholders of $2.3 million, resulting from the sale of $16.25 million of convertible preferred stock. Net loss applicable to common shareholders was $0.45 per share in the third quarter. The Company had $19.5 million of cash, restricted cash, and short-term investments as of September 30, 2001.

      Recent Highlights
During the third quarter of 2001, ViroLogic:

Completed $16.25 million private placement financing; -- Expanded agreement with Roche and Trimeris to utilize ViroLogic`s new
entry inhibitor technology to develop their fusion inhibitors, a new class of
      antiretroviral agents, for HIV;
      Entered into agreement with Triangle Pharmaceuticals to utilize ViroLogic`s phenotypic drug resistance assay, PhenoSense(TM) HIV, to assess drug activity of new antiretroviral agents targeted against HIV;
Reported that 44 of 50 U.S. state Medicaid programs now reimburse for ViroLogic`s HIV drug resistance assays; and
Conducted a successful pilot introduction of PhenoSense GT(TM), a novel combination resistance test developed in response to physician demand.

Was wollen die eigentlich?
Die beiden u.a.

Trying to use a 4 day shutdown of the air transport system is pathetic. Remember, it was the passenger airlines that were down for more than 4 days, not the air couriers like FedEx and UPS.

As far as the FDA letter not being a "Warning Letter", it is a matter of semantics. The FDA has a set period of time after it performs an inspection to issue an official "Warning Letter". They dragged their feet in issueing the letters to VLGC, Virco and LabCorp during the FDA review process for VGIN. FDA approval of the VGIN test took longer than expected but they finally issued the letters 2 days prior to VGIN`s FDA approval. Since the time limit for an official "Warning Letter" had expired, they issued the letter anyway without "Warning" in the title.

The "scare" over the FDA letter is not over. All VLGC has done about it is send a reply to the FDA. What VLGC is proposing to do is manufacture their primers in-house. To manufacture the primers under the conditions required by the FDA will require a $1M outlay up front. To compound this, the FDA is drafting new regulations to close the "manufacture your own primers" loophole in the ASR final rule. Expect to see the new regulations in about 60 days.

ViroLogic Announces New Study with Phenosense(TM) HIV Reveals Higher Than Expected Rate of HIV Drug Resistance In United States

      12/18/2001 10:30:00 AM
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. and CHICAGO, Dec 18, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- ViroLogic, Inc. (VLGC) announced today that the first national assessment of HIV drug resistance has revealed that 78 percent of HIV patients with measurable levels of virus in their blood are infected with an HIV strain that is resistant to one or more AIDS drugs.

The study, which used ViroLogic`s rapid, direct and sensitive drug resistance test, PhenoSense(TM) HIV, will be presented as a latebreaker abstract today at the 41st Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC). HIV drug resistance is the leading cause of HIV treatment failure and the data presented here indicate that the problem is considerably larger than previously believed.

"This is the first comprehensive study to show just how prevalent drug resistance has become in the U.S., and underscores the need for physicians and patients to understand both the magnitude of the resistance problem and the therapeutic approaches available to address it," said Douglas Richman, M.D., Professor of Pathology and Medicine, University of California, San Diego and Chief, Virology Section and Director, Research Center for AIDS and HIV Infection, VA San Diego Healthcare System, who presented the study today. "Drug resistance testing should become a standard part of care. Physicians can use the valuable information provided by drug resistance testing to decide if and when treatment interventions are appropriate and to help patients avoid treatment failure."

"ViroLogic, along with our distribution partners, will use this important data to continue to educate our customers about the vital need for drug resistance testing, and expect it to help fuel the continued growth of our business," said Bill Young, ViroLogic`s Chairman and CEO.

Researchers led by Dr. Richman used PhenoSense HIV to measure drug resistance among participants in the HIV Cost and Service Utilization Study (HCSUS), a longitudinal study representing the 209,000 HIV-infected adults in the United States who were receiving medical care in 1996 and were alive at the end of 1998 or early 1999. This survey was conducted more than two years after highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAART) were introduced as standard treatment regimens, indicating that widespread resistance occurred frequently despite the use of potent new classes of HIV drugs.

The study found HIV drug resistance to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI`s) in 70 percent of tested patients, to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI`s) in 31 percent of patients, and to protease inhibitors (PI`s) in 42 percent of patients. Resistance was not limited to those who have been heavily treated. While HIV in 87 percent of subjects taking antiretroviral therapy exhibited some drug resistance, virus in 41 percent of patients not receiving therapy also showed signs of drug resistance. Thus, drug resistant virus may exist in patients who have not started therapy or who have discontinued prior therapy. This finding may have significant implications not only for previously treated patients, but also for newly infected individuals, who increasingly are infected with drug resistant strains of the virus.

"The bad news here is that HIV is a highly adaptable virus that can outsmart the drugs we now have available," said Dr. Richman. "The good news is that there are approaches physicians and patients can employ to limit the impact of resistance and maintain viral suppression."
