Grizzly to claw at Buffalo Head play
2007-01-23 20:18 ET - Street Wire
by Will Purcell
Brian Testo's Grizzly Diamonds Ltd. expects to drill targets in the Buffalo Hills region of Northern Alberta this year. The company continues to pick up ground in the area and it holds several large claim blocks that nearly surround the core Buffalo Hills property, where Ashton Mining of Canada Inc. discovered nearly 40 kimberlites through the late 1990s and early 2000s. There are encouraging signs that the cluster of pipes spill across onto Grizzly's properties.
The plan
Grizzly plans to spend $500,000 flying a geophysical survey over its surrounding properties during the next few months, and Mr. Testo said the company was tentatively looking at a drill program once it has the results. Much of the company's effort will go to the Grand Cub Aidan and Preston Upon the Wolverine claims. The latter claim block is immediately west of the Ashton property, which Stornoway Diamond Corp. now controls, while the Aidan property is immediately north of the Ashton ground.
Mr. Testo said Grizzly already had six to eight targets lined up, but he preferred to have several more before committing to a firm drill plan. "If you drill three targets and you miss, everybody dumps your stock." The company expects to have enough data to make a decision before spring about testing at least 10 targets.
Grizzly is spending $500,000 on another Alberta gem hunt and it has $800,000 slated for a British Columbia gold play, bringing its current exploration budget to nearly $2-million. The company had about $1.5-million in working capital at the end of October, and closed a private placement late last year that added nearly $1-million more to its treasury.
The 11 investors that participated in the placement went unnamed, thanks to the regulators' desire to keep the identities of most investors a secret -- apparently because of privacy concerns. Mr. Testo was nevertheless willing to reveal the identity of Grizzly's main supporter in its latest share sale, which he said was the Toronto-based MineralFields Group.
Now in his mid-50s, Mr. Testo spent much of his life as a welder and pipefitter, but he began picking up diamond claims in Northern Alberta in the early days of the gem hunt. Those claims became the core projects when he took Grizzly public in 2004. Mr. Testo's private company, Grizzly Gold Ltd., is the largest shareholder of Grizzly Diamonds, accounting for about 20 per cent of the outstanding shares.
Mr. Testo said the main backers of Grizzly Diamonds were insiders, friends and family members, who accounted for about 70 per cent of the company's shares. "I have some rich friends who believe in me," he added. One of his richer friends is Whitecourt native and motel owner, Brian Elkow, who holds about 10 per cent of Grizzly's shares. Mr. Testo may be calling on his rich friends shortly, as he said Grizzly would sell more shares before the company began drilling.
The encouragement
The Buffalo Hills hunt is active once again, after a few lean years during which Ashton put in just token efforts. The company found 38 kimberlite pipes over the past decade and several of them produced enough diamonds to warrant larger tests. Ashton, now a subsidiary of Stornoway, plans a 200-tonne mini-bulk test of the K-14 pipe, and smaller tests of a few other pipes are possible.
Ashton's earlier efforts revealed a grade of 0.12 carat per tonne at K-14, and tests of K-91 and K-6 produced grades not far below that mark. The grades are comparable with results from the Fort a la Corne district in Saskatchewan, where Shore Gold Inc. is convincing investors it has a mine in the making.
Grizzly closed up four cents to $1.19 Monday on 3,000 shares.
