UPDATE Mortgage insurer Radian surges after Q3 profit
Wed Nov 5, 2008
* Q3 profit of $0.46/shr Vs estimates of $-2.16/shr
* Says capital adequate to meet current needs
* Views interest in Sherman as capital cushion
* Shares surge as much as 48 percent

BANGALORE, Nov 5 (Reuters) - U.S. mortgage and bond insurer Radian Group Inc (RDN.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) posted a quarterly profit, surprising Wall Street which was expecting a huge loss, and said it has enough capital to meet its current needs, sending shares up as much as 48 percent.
Radian views its 29 percent interest in debt purchaser Sherman Financial as a source of additional capital through dividends or potential sale, Chief Executive S.A. Ibrahim said in a conference call with analysts.
However, Ibrahim said that the company may need additional capital if the housing downturn lasts longer than expected adding that it will explore all alternatives for raising capital if needed.
Radian has suffered huge losses in the recent past from backing subprime bonds and mortgages that saw a surge in defaults as credit and housing markets in the United States worsened, impacting economies globally.
The company has posted losses for the past four quarters in a row excluding gains. In the first quarter of 2008, Radian posted a net profit helped by derivative gains.
Radian's elevated mortgage insurance losses in the quarter were offset by a reduction in the amount set aside to meet defaults on first-lien debts, Chief Executive S.A. Ibrahim said in a statement.
The company expects premium deficiency to be reduced to zero, if projected losses do not materially worsen in the fourth quarter, Radian's Finance Chief Robert Quint said in the call...

PHILADELPHIA - Mortgage insurer Radian Group Inc. posted a third-quarter profit Wednesday, reversing a year-ago loss and coming in well ahead of the sharp loss forecast by Wall Street. The company's stock soared on the results.
For the three months ended Sept. 30, Radian said it earned $36.7 million, or 46 cents per share, compared with a loss of $703.9 million, or $8.82 per share, in the prior-year quarter.
The company posted $418.7 million in revenue, compared with a revenue loss of $104.4 million, which reflected a big decline in the fair value of derivative instruments last year.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, on average, expected a loss of $1.93 per share, on revenue of $347.9 million.
Chief Executive S.A. Ibrahim said elevated mortgage insurance losses continued in the quarter, but were offset by a reduction in its first-lien premium deficiency reserve.
Radian increased its loss provision by 6.5 percent to $544.9 million. First-lien primary mortgage insurance defaults rose 16 percent to 9.71 percent. The company said "strong efforts in loss mitigation remain a critical priority to its capital preservation," and it is involved in a number of programs to improve loss management.
The company had total reserves of $3 billion on Sept. 30, including first-lien premium deficiency reserves of $150.1 million and second-lien premium deficiency reserves of $181.3 million...

wenns hoch geht dann meist ganz steil

RDN takes action on water
By Toby Gorman - Nanaimo News Bulletin
Published: November 07, 2008 3:00 PM As prevalent as it is on the West Coast, the amount and quality of useable fresh water is being reduced to levels that are beginning to raise questions.
On Gabriola Island, water levels consistently drop to extreme low levels in the summer and in other communities within the Regional District of Nanaimo, salt water intrusion into the water supply is becoming more common.
In Nanoose Bay, tap water, though not considered turbid or undrinkable, will still leave a stain on a white shirt.
To better understand the causes and implications of deteriorating water quality and quantity, the Regional District of Nanaimo wants to embark on an ambitious plan called Action For Water. It would cost taxpayers $4.57 million over 10 years and create a water management strategy within the RDN.
If approved by referendum on Nov. 15, the plan, which would increase RDN parcel tax rates by as much as $25 annually, will set out to accomplish several initiatives.
“Because we manage the water, we need to know what is going on and what to expect in the future,” said Mike Donnelly, manager for utilities at the RDN. “We can’t always rely on provincial information to meet our specific requirements.”
Through seven programs that include public awareness, water resources inventory, management of land use and development, watershed management planning, managing water use and water quality and adapting to climate change, the RDN hopes to tackle 60 actions from 2008 to 2017.
Those actions could lead to change in provincial legislation, better support for volunteers to develop watershed management plans and to promote awareness and stewardships of the watersheds that are used as drinking water resources in the region.
“It’s a step in the right direction,” said Gord Buckingham, a Nanoose resident who serves on the RDN’s Drinking Water-Watershed Protection Stewardship Committee that helped develop the 70-page report.
“It’s a blueprint for what the region should be doing not just for us, but for our kids and our kids’ generations.”
Buckingham said human activity, coupled with climate change, is drastically changing local water supply. Logging and additional roads let rain water rush to the ocean instead of being absorbed by the ground, and summer dry spells reduce groundwater.
Donnelly said an estimated 50 per cent reduction of snow pack in coming decades will also have major effects on water supplies.
“It’s not a crisis right now, but it will be and we need to be ready,” he said.
Sheila Malcolmson, a Gabriola resident, Islands Trust representative and member of the watershed stewardship committee, said Gabriolans are tapped in to water issues.
“I’ve heard complaints from one resident who didn’t have enough water to wash their baby’s diapers when their next door neighbour was out watering their lawn,” she said. “People here are very sensitive to water issues, especially in the summer, because each residence is responsible for their own water supply, be it a well or cistern.”
The end result of the project will focus on how we treat our surface and groundwater sources, how we change our attitudes and practices toward consumption, how we influence land use and how we improve coordination among stakeholders such as developers and industry.
It’s a monumental task, one municipalities within the RDN – Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum Beach and Lantzville – have all supported in theory, but have yet to commit to financially, though it is expected they will.
“This support will help spread awareness among local voters and allow us to talk about the potential benefits of Action for Water in local municipalities and not just the electoral areas that surround them,” said Joe Stanhope, chairman of the RDN.
“That’s important because watersheds are shared resources that don’t follow community boundaries, and all levels of government need to support each other to make watershed protection successful.”
If approved by the public, the Drinking Water and Watershed Protection Action Plan will begin by creating program priorities, a time frame and budget and funding methods.
“It’s a beginning,” said Buckingham. “Every bit helps. Senior levels of government aren’t stepping up to the plate so who else will? In my view water is too important to ignore; we can’t just say to hell with it and our future.”

Allen Investierten hohe Kursgewinne!

dann gehts hier sofort up

Jedenfalls besteht offenbar Buy Pressure.

...The Federal Housing Finance Agency announced a major initiative that aims to sandbag the flood of foreclosures.
The program will simplify and streamline the loan modification plan to get struggling homeowners into mortgages they can afford.
“As housing prices have fallen, delinquencies on mortgages have tripled, not just for subprime and Alt-A, but also for prime mortgages. Foreclosures have increased almost 150 percent from two years ago. Foreclosures hurt families, their neighbors, whole communities and the overall housing market. We need to stop this downward spiral,” said James Lockhart, director of FHFA. FHFA is the regulator for the Washington, D.C.-based Fannie Mae (NYSE: FNM) and McLean, Va.-based Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE).
“It is an achievable goal if homeowners, banks, mortgage servicers, investors, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac all work together,” he said.
The program targets borrowers who have missed three or more payments, own and occupy the property as a their primary residence, and has not filed for bankruptcy.
The program will modify the borrowers loan so that the payment is no more than 38 percent of monthly gross income, which will be achieved through a mix of reducing the mortgage interest rate, extending the life of the loan or deferring payment on part of the principal.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loan servicers will be responsible for implementing the program by Dec. 15 and will receive $800 for each loan modified through the program.
Fannie and Freddie own or guarantee some 31 million mortgages, about 58 percent of all single family home loans — though those loans only represent about 20 percent of seriously delinquent loans, Lockhart said.

Four Reasons Radian Group Is Headed Higher
by: The Correct Call November 12, 2008 | about stocks: RDN
The Correct Call
Add to Your WatchlistAbout this author:
Bio & more articles
Visit The Correct Call
Become a Contributor Submit an Article Font Size: PrintEmail We recently wrote about Mortgage Finance companies as potential targets for some major upside. We screened all the companies in the sector looking for potential buy candidates and came away with one: Radian Group (RDN).
Radian Group is a leading provider of credit enhancement for the global financial and capital markets. RDN evaluates credit risk, provides products and services in mortgage insurance, public finance, structured finance, reinsurance and other financial services help clients and investors manage risk.
Like many stocks that have anything to do with mortgages, this stock has been beaten down like Roy Jones Junior against Joe Calzhage. The 52 week range is $14.46 to 70 cents. Currently the stock trades at a hair below $4 per share.
There are four reasons we believe RDN is worth your consideration.
As we mentioned before, our technical analysis revealed a buy signal for the Mortgage Finance Sector.
RDNs chart also produced two buy signals.
While the company does have its share of financial difficulties, its valuations on a few levels gives us hope for a turnaround or possible takeover when market conditions improve..
Taxpayer money is coming the sector's way, you can count on it.
Technical Analysis of the Mortgage Finance Sector
The sector has been bludgeoned during the last year. The Mortgage Finance chart recently had a positive MACD crossover under ZERO, usually a reliable buy signal. As depressed as the sector has been, we believe the darkest days are probably behind us and the light we see is the end of the tunnel and not an oncoming train.
Technical Analysis of Radian Group’s Chart
Positive RDN Valuations
Fundamentally, there is very little to like with Radian, they are in a difficult environment and losing money faster than broken down horse players betting on three legged ponies. That being said, there are two valuations that jump off the page to us. First, RDN’s book value is around $29 per share. That makes its $4 price tag look attractive. Second, RDN trades at only 0.18 times sales. That means Radian does 5 times more in revenue than the entire value of all its shares outstanding. Again, it gives us hope, and that’s in now, don’t you know?
Taxpayer Money is on the Way
The bailout bonanza net is widening and catching all kinds of fish: Banks, Automotive Manufactures and now Mortgage Companies have their place in line. A new mortgage assistance plan announced by the Federal Housing Finance Agency is expected to takes effect on December 15. The plan calls for borrowers to get reduced interest rates or longer loan terms to make their payments more affordable. And this is just the start as “critics” say… you guessed it, “it’s not enough.”
When you add it all up, the sum of the parts brings us to one conclusion: RDN’s share price is headed higher in the near-term. We believe the stock will at least test its 200 day moving average of $4.55. That’s nearly a 26% return from its current price. A close above the 200 day moving average would probably push the stock into the $5.70 range, a 46% return. Those numbers can go a long way in repairing some of the damage done to many portfolios.
Suggested Stop: $2.93
Disclosure: Author holds a long position in RDN

As we mentioned before, our technical analysis revealed a buy signal for the Mortgage Finance Sector.
RDNs chart also produced two buy signals.
While the company does have its share of financial difficulties, its valuations on a few levels gives us hope for a turnaround or possible takeover when market conditions improve..
... brings us to one conclusion: RDN’s share price is headed higher in the near-term.

U.S. Corporate Bonds Sold in October Rally in Sign of Recovery
By Gabrielle Coppola
Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. corporate bonds issued in October are
rallying in a sign that credit markets may be recovering after the
worst month for investment-grade debt in more than 28 years.
Prices on bonds sold by International Business Machines Corp., PepsiCo
Inc., Diageo Plc and Verizon Communications Inc. climbed as much as
10.8 percent since they were issued in October, according to Trace,
the bond-pricing service of the Financial Industry Regulatory
Authority.
Investors willing and able to buy corporate debt last month scooped up
top-rated bonds on the cheap as companies offered record yields over
benchmarks. Gains on the newly issued debt may help draw demand from
more buyers, helping pry open a market that's been all but shut since
mid-September, said Jim Shirak, lead fixed-income strategist at Boyd
Watterson Asset Management.
``We're thinking these levels at such wide spreads still represent
value,'' said Shirak, whose Cleveland firm manages $3 billion in fixed-
income assets and bought IBM's 30-year bonds in October. Even if
yields over benchmark rates stop rising, he said, investors can ``make
a lot of money.''
IBM sold $4 billion of five, 10- and 30-year debt on Oct. 9, a record
amount for the Armonk, New York-based company, according to data
compiled by Bloomberg.
The $1.6 billion of 7.625 percent, 10-year notes traded at 109.68
cents on the dollar to yield 6.3 percent as of yesterday, according to
Trace. That amounts to a 10.1 percent return, compared with an average
loss of 0.917 percent for investment- grade bonds in the same period,
according to Merrill Lynch & Co. index data.
PepsiCo, Verizon
Purchase, New York-based PepsiCo's 7.9 percent notes due in 2018 have
risen to 110.55 cents on the dollar as of yesterday, from 99.758 cents
when they were issued Oct. 21, for a return of 10.8 percent.
The 8.75 percent notes due in 2018 issued Oct. 30 by New York-based
Verizon, the second-largest U.S. phone company, rose 4.9 percent to
104.28 cents on the dollar as of yesterday, Trace data show. Investors
who bought 7.375 percent notes due 2014 from London-based Diageo, the
world's largest liquor company, earned a return of 4.1 percent as of
yesterday, based on prices from Trace.
The gains are likely to entice other issuers into the market, said Rob
Kay, head of Credit Suisse Group Inc.'s investment-grade syndicate in
New York.
``When people see these transactions that came at the height of the
volatility doing extremely well, it gives other issuers a green light
that they can get involved,'' he said.
Yesterday, AT&T Inc. of Dallas, the largest U.S. telephone company,
and New York-based cigarette maker Philip Morris International Inc.
led $4.2 billion in bond sales, the biggest day in 10 weeks.
`Difficulty in Reacting'
Many investors racked by losses aren't ready yet to buy corporate
bonds, said Jack Malvey, a fixed-income strategist at Barclays Capital
in New York.
``There are all sorts of very high-quality specimens within the bond
market that have great value, but there's difficulty in reacting given
the difficult performance in 2008 for so many types of investment
categories,'' he said Nov. 11 in a Bloomberg Radio interview.
The average total return on investment-grade corporate bonds was a
7.38 percent loss in October, the worst month since a 7.356 percent
decline in February 1980, Merrill data show.
Yields on investment-grade company debt rose to a record 6.18
percentage points more than Treasuries as of Oct. 29, from 3.44
percentage points on Sept. 12, before Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.
filed for bankruptcy, Merrill data show. Lehman's collapse on Sept. 15
heightened concern that more of the largest financial companies may
fail. Spreads narrowed to 5.87 percentage points as of yesterday.
October Sales Plummet
The new issue market ground to a near halt as Lehman's bankruptcy
drove investors to the safety of government debt. Sales plummeted to
$24 billion in October from $107 billion in the same month last year.
For the year, sales were $725.6 billion compared with $1.05 trillion
in the same period in 2007.
Bond prices tumbled in October amid a wave of forced selling by money
managers honoring redemptions from investors. Borrowers that ventured
into the new issues market amid the tumult in September and October
paid yields that were about 1 percentage point higher than where their
existing debt was trading at the time of issue, Kay said. That
translates into extra interest of about $10 million a year on a $1
billion deal.
Investors demanded higher yields relative to existing debt last month
to cover losses as the bonds they already held became cheaper as
credit and equity markets deteriorated. In October 2007, companies
typically paid a so-called new issue premium of about 0.15 percentage
point, Kay said.

Schau erst wieder in zwei Jahren ins Depot und lass mich überraschen was passiert.

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Radian Group Inc. (NYSE: RDN) today confirmed its expectation that its mortgage insurance business will have sufficient capital and liquidity to pay all anticipated claims, maintain a strong market position and continue to write new mortgage insurance business throughout 2009.
Noting Moody's Investors Service's rating action today, S.A. Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of Radian, commented, "We do not believe today's action by Moody's reflects our substantial claims-paying resources and the improving quality of our mortgage insurance portfolio. Radian Guaranty is a long-standing approved mortgage insurer to the GSEs. We do not expect that this action will result in any change to our ability to insure loans that are sold to either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. In addition, we remain encouraged by recent government efforts including the allocation of $50 billion to aid troubled home owners. Furthermore, we are optimistic regarding recent comments by the FHFA, acknowledging the need to make TARP funds available to the mortgage insurance industry."
Radian provided the following business highlights:
The Company remains adequately capitalized with a strong market position and believes that it can write MI business throughout 2009 while maintaining a risk to capital level below the 25 to 1 statutory limit.
Radian Asset, the principal financial guaranty subsidiary, continues to serve as an important source of capital support for Radian Guaranty, the principal mortgage insurance subsidiary, and is expected to continue to provide this core business with cash infusions over time.
The Company continues to believe that it has adequate liquidity in its mortgage insurance business to pay all future claims for the next 3 years without including any of the Financial Guaranty capital.
In December, Radian further enhanced its strong holding company liquidity position by amending its credit agreement to provide the Company with greater financial flexibility by limiting the scope of certain covenants. Radian has no ratings, risk to capital, or debt to capitalization covenants.
Radian remains focused on efficiently managing its operations, preserving capital through a variety of loss management strategies, and maximizing opportunities to write profitable, new business that will best position the Company for the long term.

dieser absatz gefällt mir am besten:
...the Company continues to believe that it has adequate liquidity in its mortgage insurance business to pay all future claims for the next 3 years without including any of the Financial Guaranty capital...

good trades and luck!
