- also KUV von ca. 0,06 !!!!!

7:00 a.m. EDT April 27, 2009
WEST HAVEN, Conn., Apr 27, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- NanoViricides, Inc. (OTC
BB: NNVC.OB) (the "Company"), announced that it is developing FluCide((TM)),
its flagship anti-influenza drug candidate, to work against all influenza types and subtypes. FluCide has been shown to be effective against both common influenza subtype H1N1, as well as two different variants of bird flu subtype H5N1.
The Company has previously announced excellent results in both animal studies and cell culture studies against widely different influenza subtypes and strains. If these results are confirmed in further animal and human studies, then FluCide would likely be considered the best ever drug effective against all influenzas. The Company is communicating its capabilities to various agencies involved in the current epidemic response.
The current swine flu outbreak is significant in that the H1N1 virus causing
it is novel (
http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/influenza/panflu/ne…
html ). The US Department of Homeland Security has declared a Swine Flu
Emergency yesterday. The WHO has said that the outbreak is an emergency of
international concern (
http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2009/04/26/DHS-declares-swine…
PI-53711240725694/ ). The pig is known to be a transitional species for
influenza viruses. That means re-assortment (i.e. mixing) of genes from bird
flu, human flu, and swine flu viruses can take place in pigs. This can lead
to more lethal, drug resistant novel strains to emerge from different
existing ones.
"Nanoviricides((TM)) have clear advantages over antibodies and vaccines as
antiviral strategies," said Dr. Diwan, President of NanoViricides.
Antibodies are relatively specific to a particular virus strain or subtype.
It is well known that HIV and influenza viruses among many others, quickly
escape antibodies. Vaccines depend upon the development of antibodies by the
host, and thus, cannot protect efficiently against those viruses which are
continually changing their character, such as the influenza virus. Influenza
vaccines in particular have to be developed with the strain that is expected
to infect in the next year's cycle. It is well known that this is not a
failure-proof strategy for epidemic-causing strains that are novel.
About NanoViricides:

H5N1 bird flu, seasonal Influenza, HIV, EKC, Hepatitis C, Rabies, Dengue

GLTA!
Nikkei News Reporting Peramivir to be available in Japan by 2010!
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=n...
www.zeenews.com/news534168.html
Osaka, May 24: Japanese drug producers on Sunday said they expect to launch new influenza drugs possibly from next year in Japan, giving more options for flu treatment.
Drugmakers Shionogi & Co and Daiichi Sankyo Co are aiming to sell a new drug from around next year. Flu patients can have choices besides Tamiflu and Relenza now available from European firms, officials from the drug firms said.
Shionogi's new prescription drug, called Peramivir, will be injected, while Tamiflu is an oral drug and Relenza is to be inhaled.
When a person is not seriously ill, one injection would be sufficient and the drug would be effective even if it is given to a patient after the onset of flu, they said.
In trials, the Shionogi drug demonstrated therapeutic effects against the deadly H5N1 avian flu as well, they said. In 2007, Shionogi was granted by US firm BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc exclusive rights to develop and sell Peramivir in Japan.

{"s" : "bcrx","k" : "c10,l10,p20,t10","o" : "","j" : ""} In patients with uncomplicated seasonal influenza, Shionogi conducted a three-armed, multi-center, randomized, double-blind, multi-national Phase 3 study of i.v. peramivir that compared the efficacy and safety of a single dose of peramivir (either 300 mg or 600 mg) and treatment with oral oseltamivir phosphate 75 mg (Tamiflu(®)) twice a day for five days. A total of 1,099 patients were enrolled at 146 centers (Japan:100; Korea:25; Taiwan:21). Both the 300 mg and 600 mg single dose peramivir groups demonstrated non-inferiority for the primary endpoint, time to alleviation of symptoms (TTAS), compared to the oseltamivir group. The medians for TTAS for the peramivir 300 mg, peramivir 600 mg and oseltamivir groups were 78.0 hours, 81.0 hours and 81.8 hours, respectively.
Additionally, Shionogi conducted a double-blind, multi-center Phase 3 study of i.v. peramivir with dosing over multiple days. The study enrolled 42 influenza patients at high-risk of serious complications due to one or more qualifying conditions: diagnosis with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, a chronic respiratory disease requiring pharmacotherapy, or current treatment with any immunosuppressive drug. Peramivir was administered at 300 mg or 600 mg per day, and the duration was adjusted (up to five days) on a case-by-case basis, depending on the patient's temperature and clinical condition. In this study, the median time to alleviation of symptoms in all 37 evaluable patients treated with either 300 mg or 600 mg peramivir daily was 68.6 hours.
i.v. peramivir 300 mg and 600 mg in both single and multiple doses were generally safe and well-tolerated in these trials. Further analyses of the study data, including secondary efficacy endpoints and detailed safety is underway. Additional data will be submitted for presentation at an upcoming medical meeting.
"The clinical outcomes of these Phase 3 studies are important, especially during the declared influenza pandemic, as they indicate the promise of peramivir as a treatment for influenza," commented Dr. William P. Sheridan, Chief Medical Officer of BioCryst. "The need for additional anti-viral treatment options for influenza remains high. BioCryst is currently finalizing its plans for peramivir Phase 3 studies intended to support U.S. regulatory approval, while continuing to support the pre-emergency use authorization review of peramivir by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration."
"This data represents a significant milestone for BioCryst -- the first Phase 3 studies successfully conducted with a drug candidate discovered by BioCryst," said Jon P. Stonehouse, President and Chief Executive Officer of BioCryst. "We congratulate Shionogi on the success of these rapidly completed studies, which have the potential to lead to the first regulatory approval for peramivir."
Shionogi has stated that the Company is making its best effort to file its New Drug Application and to receive a manufacturing approval as soon as possible in Japan.
About Peramivir
Peramivir is an anti-viral agent that inhibits the interactions of influenza neuraminidase, an enzyme which is critical to the spread of influenza within a host. Peramivir has demonstrated clinical activity and safety in prior human studies. In laboratory tests, peramivir has shown activity against various viral strains, including the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus. In the U.S., BioCryst is preparing plans for additional Phase 3 studies of i.v. peramivir to support product registration. Additionally, i.v. peramivir is currently undergoing a pre-emergency use authorization (EUA) review.
About the Shionogi & Co., Ltd. Partnership

Positive results push BioCryst flu drug closer to federal approval
BioCryst Pharmaceuticals announced positive clinical study results for its flu drug peramivir, pushing it closer to seeking federal approval for commercialization.
The Birmingham-based firm said a single intravenous dose of peramivir performed as well as orally ingested Tamiflu in patients with uncomplicated seasonal flu. The latest success has BioCryst planning for late-stage studies to push for Food and Drug Administration approval for commercial sale.
BioCryst stock was up nearly 45 percent in midday Friday trading to $6.11 per share after closing at $4.22 on Thursday.
The study was conducted by BioCryst's partner Shionogi & Co. Ltd. of Osaka, Japan, during the 2008-2009 flu season. Shionogi and Green Cross Corp., the license holder of peramivir in Korea, co-conducted studies in Korea.
Patients were given either 300 or 600 milligrams of peramivir twice daily for five days during the study. A total of 1,099 patients were enrolled at 146 centers in those Asian countries, according to a news release.
Intravenous peramivir in single and multiple doses were generally safe and well-tolerated in these trials, the release said. Further analyses of the study data are underway.
"This data represents a significant milestone for BioCryst,” BioCryst CEO Jon P. Stonehouse said.

UN warns over swine flu in birds
By Sudeep Chand
Science reporter, BBC News
Turkeys have caught swine flu in Chile
The discovery of swine flu in birds in Chile raises concerns about the spread of the virus, the UN warns.
Last week the H1N1 virus was found in turkeys on farms in Chile. The UN now says poultry farms elsewhere in the world could also become infected.
Scientists are worried that the virus could theoretically mix with more dangerous strains. It has previously spread from humans to pigs.
However, swine flu remains no more severe than seasonal flu.
Safe to eat
Chilean authorities first reported the incident last week. Two poultry farms are affected near the seaport of Valparaiso.
Juan Lubroth, interim chief veterinary officer of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said: "Once the sick birds have recovered, safe production and processing can continue. They do not pose a threat to the food chain."
Chilean authorities have established a temporary quarantine and have decided to allow the infected birds to recover rather than culling them.
It is thought the incident represents a "spill-over" from infected farm workers to turkeys.
Canada, Argentina and Australia have previously reported spread of the H1N1 swine flu virus from farm workers to pigs.
Dangerous strains
The emergence of a more dangerous strain of flu remains a theoretical risk. Different strains of virus can mix together in a process called genetic reassortment or recombination.
So far there have been no cases of H5N1 bird flu in flocks in Chile.
However, Dr Lubroth said: "In Southeast Asia there is a lot of the (H5N1) virus circulating in poultry.
"The introduction of H1N1 in these populations would be of greater concern."
Colin Butter from the UK's Institute of Animal Health agrees.
"We hope it is a rare event and we must monitor closely what happens next," he told BBC News.
"However, it is not just about the H5N1 strain. Any further spread of the H1N1 virus between birds, or from birds to humans would not be good.
"It might make the virus harder to control, because it would be more likely to change."
William Karesh, vice president of the Wildlife Conservation Society, who studies the spread of animal diseases, says he is not surprised by what has happened.
"The location is surprising, but it could be that Chile has a better surveillance system.
"However, the only constant is that the situation keeps changing."

One influenza analyst expects overseas orders this week
SAN FRANCISCO – BioCryst Pharmaceuticals’ (NASDAQ: BCRX, Stock Forum) antiviral treatment peramivir for 2009 H1N1 influenza will generate $1 billion a year in profit margin, or $28 a share.
Each five-day regimen contains a total of 3,000 milligrams of the drug, which is showing an 80 percent or higher success rate in patients who must be hospitalized for respiratory and other influenza complications. Peramvir slows the effects of the enzyme influenza neuraminidase that accelerates the spread of the Type A H1N1 virus in humans.

Peramvir slows the effects of the enzyme influenza neuraminidase that accelerates the spread of the Type A H1N1 virus in humans.
