GLEN ALLEN, Va., Aug. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Star Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ: CIGX) has announced that the company is pleased to initiate the launch today of Anatabloc(TM), a dietary supplement that is designed to support the immune system in maintaining healthy levels of inflammation. Anatabloc(TM), developed by the company's Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals subsidiary, is being launched via a dedicated website (www.anatabloc.com) where the product can be purchased. The product also can be purchased through a toll-free customer center (1-800-778-2031).

Anatabloc(TM) contains the dietary ingredient anatabine citrate. Anatabine is an alkaloid that is found in a variety of plants in the Solinaceae family including the tobacco plant as well as in eggplant, green peppers and green tomatoes. Anatabine citrate, combined with Vitamins A and D3, is believed to assist the body in maintaining anti-inflammatory support. Excess inflammation is linked with a variety of auto-immune conditions that include thyroid dysfunction and arthritis. A provisional patent application has been filed with the US Patent & Trademark Office for the Anatabloc(TM) product.

As the company noted in an earlier release, a human trial examining the role of Anatabloc(TM) in subjects who are at risk for excessive inflammation is currently being conducted (the FIint study). Another human trial, conducted by Rock Creek, will begin in late September, and the company expects that a third trial, to be overseen by researchers at the University of Pisa, will begin during the fourth quarter.

A group of Richmond area physicians and healthcare providers are gathering at the Virginia Governor’s mansion today to learn more about the state of the research on Anatabloc(TM). The lead researchers who have overseen pre-clinical studies will discuss the results of testing with this group. They will be joined by researchers from the University of Virginia Medical School and the VCU Medical Center who also are interested in studying further potentials for Anatabloc(TM). Rock Creek has solicited research proposals from these institutions, and expects to issue planning grants for the preparation of full research proposals. The company anticipates that several of the planning grants will be announced today. Jonnie R. Williams, Star Scientific CEO, commented: “The tobacco plant led the way in growing the economy of the Commonwealth of Virginia 400 years ago. As a Virginia-based company, we now want to lead the way in understanding how the tobacco plant can yield important benefits to human health.”

Anatabloc(TM) is the second dietary supplement to be developed by Rock Creek."

Star Scientific Loses New Trial Bid in Reynolds Tobacco Case
      Q
      By Susan Decker - Aug 26, 2011 8:34 PM GMT+0200

Star Scientific Inc. tumbled the most in two years after losing a bid for a new trial in its decade-long effort to extract patent royalties from Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) on way to reduce carcinogens in cigarettes.
While the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington today upheld the validity of two Star patents, the panel said there was no need to retry the infringement case against Reynolds that Star lost in 2009. Chief Circuit Judge Randall Rader said in the 2-1 opinion that a new trial wouldn’t change the outcome as “there was substantial untainted evidence before the jury to support a verdict of non-infringement.”
The patents cover a curing process that prevents “bacterial activity” in tobacco leaves, resulting in the lowest levels of cancer causing nitrosamines, according to Star. The money-losing company, which had less than $1 million in sales last year, has “not been able to monetize their only asset,” Martin Shkreli, chief investment officer of New York- based hedge fund MSMB Capital Management, said after the ruling.
“This is a complete loss for Star and basically makes their business worthless,” said Shkreli, who has trading positions that bet on the stock falling. “Investors have been down this litigation road with Star for five to 10 years and it’s never been fruitful.”
      Shares Fall
Star whipsawed in Nasdaq Stock Market trading after the ruling was made public, rising as much as 32 percent before tumbling the most since June 2009. The shares fell $1.45, or 48 percent, to $1.55 at 2:12 p.m. New York time.
The Glen Allen, Virginia-based company said it’s considering options for “further appellate review.” Star said the validity ruling will allow it to pursue claims “against all prior and future infringers,” including another case it has against Reynolds that had been put on hold pending this appeal.
“We intend to vigorously protect our intellectual property, which we consider to be among our corporate crown jewels,” Star Chairman and President Paul L. Perito said in a statement today.
Star had claimed Reynolds was unable on its own to reduce nitrosamines in tobacco as much as Star could. Star said Reynolds then chose to use the technology without permission as part of an effort to “neutralize” competition. Reynolds denied the claim, challenging validity of the patents.
“We’re very pleased with today’s ruling,” August Borschke, chief patent counsel for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, said in an e-mail. “R.J. Reynolds did not infringe Star’s patents.”
      Patent Office Review
R.J. Reynolds Tobacco is the cigarette unit of Winston- Salem, North Carolina-based Reynolds American, the second- largest U.S. tobacco company. Reynolds makes Camel, Winston and Salem brand cigarettes.
The case initially had been thrown out in June 2007 after U.S. District Judge Marvin Garbis said Star deceived the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to obtain formal rights to the invention. The appeals court reversed that order, setting the stage for the 2009 trial.
The case is Star Scientific v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., 10-1183, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (Washington). The lower court case is Star Scientific Inc. (CIGX) v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., 01cv1504, U.S. District Court, District of Maryland (Greenbelt).

Star Scientific Reports First Peer-Reviewed Article on Anatabine and
      Alzheimer's Disease by Roskamp Institute

      GLEN ALLEN, Virginia, October 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --

Star Scientific, Inc. (Nasdaq: CIGX) reports today the publication of the
first peer-reviewed article on the in-vitro and in-vivo activity of anatabine
in Alzheimer's Disease. The article is authored by scientists at the Roskamp
Institute and is electronically published in the European Journal of
Pharmacology (2011 Sept 19). It states that anatabine lowers Alzheimer's
      A-beta production in-vitro and in-vivo.

In the article the authors describe the accumulation of an abnormal substance,
called A-beta, the substance that leads to amyloid formation and damage to
brain tissue. They studied the formation of A-beta and showed how anatabine
lowers levels of two forms of A-beta (1-40 and 1-42) in a dose-dependent
manner, possibly by preventing or reducing formation from the precursor
protein. After showing the activity in the test tube, the researchers went on
to show that when anatabine is given to mice vulnerable to accumulation of
amyloid, treatment with anatabine lowers brain levels of both A-beta (1-40)
and A-beta (1-42), postulated to be due to effects on NFKB activation. Michael
Mullan, MD, Ph.D., Roskamp Institute co-director and one of the article's
authors, commented, "This paper demonstrates anatabine's potential as an
anti-inflammatory agent and shows it may have broad applications including for
      disorders like Alzheimer's Disease."

Anatabine citrate is one of the active ingredients in Anatabloc™, a dietary
supplement developed by Star Scientific's subsidiary, Rock Creek
Pharmaceuticals. Anatabloc™, which entered the market on August 30, is
      designed to provide anti-inflammatory support ( http://www.anatabloc.com ).
Curtis Wright, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President of Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals,
expressed his opinion of the Roskamp findings. "While we were aware that
Roskamp was conducting studies of the effects of dietary supplementation with
anatabine in Alzheimer's Disease, it is gratifying that external peer review
validated the work they have done. The research confirms that this natural
plant compound shows an interesting regulatory effect on brain immune
responses. It is one thing to believe your own results; it is quite another to
have them accepted by your peers in the scientific community." Anatabine for
the Roskamp research was provided through Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals.

Ongoing human clinical studies of anatabine citrate, and the commercial
product Anatabloc™, are examining the potential role of nutritional
supplementation in regulating low-level inflammation controlled by the NFκB
      system.
