Es handelt sich um eine Beteiligungsgesellschaft ähnlich CMGI.
Wenn man die Beteiligungen bewertet müßte der Kurs ca. 10 mal so hoch sein.
In diesem Jahr stehen noch mind. 2 IPO`s an.

      Schöne Grüße!

Acacia Research Affiliate, CombiMatrix Corporation, Granted U.S.
      <ACRI.O>

Acacia Research Affiliate, CombiMatrix Corporation, Granted U.S. Patent for Biochip Array Processor System PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 1, 2000--Acacia Research Corporation (Nasdaq:ACRI) today announced that its majority-owned affiliate, CombiMatrix Corporation, has been granted a United States patent for its biochip array processor system, which enables quick and economical turnaround of custom-designed microarrays for use in biological research. This is the first U.S. patent issued to the Seattle, Wash. area-based biotechnology company. The patent covers CombiMatrix`s core technology, which is a method for producing microarrays by synthesizing biological materials on a three-dimensional, active surface. The technology was developed by Chief Technology Officer Donald Montgomery Ph.D., an electrochemist and a founder of CombiMatrix. "The sequencing of the genome has created an incredibly rich resource of information," said Gerald Knudson, CombiMatrix`s Chief Executive Officer. "But right now it`s just raw data. Researchers need powerful and efficient tools such as microarrays to turn that information into something meaningful and useful. This patent strengthens CombiMatrix`s ability to produce customized microarrays quickly and cost-effectively without the use of complicated robotics or expensive re-tooling, and brings us closer to our ultimate goal of lowering costs and risks associated with research and development." CombiMatrix`s system uses electrochemistry and semiconductor technology for biological applications. The microarray chip consists of thousands of tiny chemical "virtual flasks" arranged in a grid pattern on the surface of a semiconductor wafer. The virtual flasks are the thickness of a human hair and are separated using special solutions instead of physical walls. Each virtual flask has electronic circuitry that is directed by a computer to construct a unique chemical compound. The chips, which can be easily customized to meet the specifications of an individual research function, are then used for scientific testing. "This patent is a significant part of our strategy to provide protection for our technology and intellectual property portfolio," said Patrick de Maynadier, CombiMatrix`s Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. "This strategy permits us to concentrate on furthering the application of the technology." In addition to this patent, CombiMatrix has 22 patent applications pending worldwide. Acacia Research owns 61.4% of CombiMatrix Corporation. About CombiMatrix Corporation Founded in 1995, CombiMatrix develops research tools for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Together with its novel biochip array processor system, CombiMatrix has leveraged the power of bioinformatics and the speed of the Internet to transform the process of generating, analyzing and managing complex biological information. This platform technology integrates electrochemical and semiconductor technologies to enable biological applications such as genomics and proteomics. CombiMatrix is located outside of Seattle and is majority-owned by Acacia Research. Hallo !

      Hier mal was in deutsch:

      Acacia spekulativ

"The proceeds of the offering will be used for commercialization, research and development, working capital and possible strategic partnerships," said Gerald Knudson, Chief Executive Officer of CombiMatrix Corporation. Investors included Acacia Research, Emerging Growth Management, JDS Capital, Oracle Partners, OrbiMed Advisors, SAC Capital Management, Seneca Capital and Wheatley Partners. "With the ability to make custom microarrays more quickly and cost-effectively than their competitors, CombiMatrix has the potential to be a leader in this growing market," said David Blaustein, M.D., principal of Oracle Partners. OrbiMed Advisors` Samuel Wertheimer, Ph.D. added, "CombiMatrix has a proven management team and a technology that is positioned to take advantage of the wealth of information expected to result from the sequencing of the human genome." The company`s patented system uses electrochemistry and semiconductor technology to produce microarrays by synthesizing biological materials on a three-dimensional, active chip surface. The microarray chip consists of thousands of tiny chemical "virtual flasks" arranged in a grid pattern on the surface of a semiconductor wafer. The virtual flasks are the diameter of a human hair and are separated using proprietary chemical solutions instead of physical walls. Each virtual flask has electronic circuitry that is directed by a computer to construct a unique chemical compound. The chips, which can be easily customized to meet the specifications of individual researchers, are then used for scientific experiments. Acacia Research owns 58.6% of CombiMatrix Corporation

      Hallo zusammen.

It sends a very clear signal to the Internet industry ----- "autsch"

      Reuters
      F S E u f BC-TECH-MP3COM REC-BUS-US-BEV-ENT-CA-WWW-NEWS-PUB-LAW 09-06 0694 By Sue Zeidler
LOS ANGELES, Sept 6 (Reuters) - In the latest legal win fortraditional media companies seeking to protect intellectualproperty in cyberspace, a federal judge on Wednesday ruled thatMP3.com Inc. willfully infringed copyrights owned by Seagram CoLtd.`s Universal Music, the world`s biggest music company. "It sends a very clear signal to the Internet industry thatthe traditional content companies still hold a lot of cardswhen it comes to controlling their copyrights online," saidEric Scheirer, analyst with Forrester Research. Other music companies like Time Warner Inc.`s (NYSE: TWX)Warner Music, Sony Corp. <6758.T>, Bertelsmann AG and EMI Group Plc (LSE: EMI) had previously settled with onlinemusic company MP3.com (NASDAQ: MPPP) , but Universal , home toartists like Sheryl Crow and Sting, had held its ground. In the ruling, which could cost MP3.com up to $250 millionin damages, U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff ordered MP3.com topay Universal $25,000 for each CD unlawfully copied. Universalsays 10,000 CDs were copied. Analysts said damages totaling $250 million would severelycripple MP3.com or effectively put it out of business. MP3.com said it would appeal the decision. "This should send a message that there are consequenceswhen a business recklessly disregards the copyright law," saidCary Sherman, a lawyer for the Recording Industry Associationof America (RIAA), which represents all the big recordcompanies. But analysts were also quick to note that court victoriesalone will not be enough to stop fans from sharing music, movies and other digital information, often for free, on theInternet. "They`re winning in court, but the court is the battle andnot the whole war. The marketplace is the war," said Scheirer. "All of these legal battles go on as Napster and othertechnologies gain consumer interest and as users leave alegitimate marketplace," he said. Others said the other big music companies like Warner andSony had the right idea by settling with MP3.com and trying toembrace the technology. Under these settlements, MP3.com agreedto pay each label about $20 million in damages and a fee eachtime one of the label`s albums was registered by a user andanother fee each time a user accesses one of its songs. "I think the whole thing is pretty unfortunate. Any timethe big labels make progress in the online music arena, itseems lately that Universal comes along and throws a wrench inthe works," said Malcolm Maclachlan, analyst with InternationalData Corp. Rakoff ruled in April that MP3.com broke copyright law bycreating a database of over 80,000 albums, which when combinedwith its software, allows users to store music digitally andthen access it via any computer. The service is calledMy.MP3.com. The My.MP3.com service lets computer users with an originalcopy of one of the recordings in the database register that CD.It then allows the user to listen to that album over theInternet from any computer, without having to insert theoriginal disc. Rakoff`s decision marked the third victory for Hollywoodstudios in as many high-profile cases lately where theconglomerates have sought to protect their copyrights online. In another landmark case last month, a federal judge inManhattan ruled in favor of Hollywood`s big movie studios bybarring a journalist, Eric Corley, from republishing softwarecode that unlocks scrambling on DVDs, enabling movies to becopied and swapped on the Internet. And in July, a federal judge issued an order effectivelyshutting down popular song-swap company Napster. The order wasstayed at the last minute by an appeals court, but that case ison a fast legal track and many people expect the case to havewide-ranging implications for books, movies and television. As the defendants in all three cases appeal the courts`decisions, many members of the high-tech world have begun toexpress views that the courts need to revise the models forintellectual property protection given changes in technology.
