Ad hoc announcement transmitted by DGAP. The issuer is solely responsible for the content of this announcement. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STEAG HamaTech AG, Sternenfels, the leading global supplier of manufacturing equipment for optical storage media (CD and DVD) and photomasks, has ended the first half-year of 2001 with a loss of 18.1 million euro as already reported on 6th July. The group registered turnover of 72.6 million euro in the first half year with incoming orders totalling 96.1 million euro.

An upward trend is evident in the level of incoming orders, with 20% more orders being placed in the second quarter than in the previous one. The increase was substantially more significant in comparison to the second quarter of the previous year. This is especially true for the DVD segment, which enjoyed a disproportionately high level of incoming orders as compared to the previous year. However, the current business situation is defined foremost by significant overcapacities among producers of manufacturing equipment as well as by a sharp decline in market volume. This led to a substantial drop in price, especially in the CD-R segment, making a cost-covering price a currently unattainable goal.

Despite the strong decrease in market volume (approx. -50% as compared to the previous year), the level of incoming orders in the first half-year clearly demonstrates that STEAG HamaTech is increasing its market share in this difficult environment. In the half-year comparison, the -13% decrease in incoming orders was disproportionately small. "We continue to see the market for CD and DVD manufacturing units as a long-term growth market, regardless of these temporary difficulties".

Issuer`s information/explanatory remarks concerning this ad hoc announcement:

Another positive point is that incoming orders in the DVD segment once again made up more than 27% of total orders - as was already the case in the first quarter. STEAG HamaTech has thus once again confirmed that it now has a highly competitive product portfolio in the pre-played DVD segment.

The company expects that the market and earnings situation will remain unattractive in the second half-year. The continuing overcapacities and the sharp drop in margins associated with this will also lead to a loss for the year as a whole.

One year ago, the Managing Board implemented a program designed to improve earnings in light of the dissatisfactory market and earnings situation. The first successes brought about by this program are underscored in the quarterly report now being published. The company has, for example, been successful in significantly reducing the number of employees from 595 (30th June 2000) to 473 (30th June 2001). Administration costs and marketing overhead have also been reduced by more than 20% as compared to the previous year. The continuation of the program is focusing on measures to reduce manufacturing costs, further lower overhead costs as well as renewed measures to adapt personnel capacities to the changed market conditions. According to Dr. Stephan Mohren, Chairman of the Managing Board, these measures will have a positive effect on results over the course of the next 12 months.

The company will present its half-yearly report in detail at a press conference in Stuttgart at 3rd August. The entire text of the quarterly report can be called up at http://www.steag-hamatech.com.
