GENERAL INSTRUMENT`S SURFboard® CABLE MODEM RECEIVES @HOME NETWORK LEVEL 2 APPROVAL
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
@Home Network approval validates GI`s modem for cable networking services and demonstrates GI`s leadership in providing DOCSIS-based modems
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HORSHAM, Pa. (March 1, 1999) - General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) today announced that @Home Network has approved GI`s SURFboard® high-speed cable modem for cable data networking services. This approval enables GI to proceed with large modem trials and deployments in @Home Network affiliate systems.
The @Home Network Level 2 approval also confirms that GI`s SURFboard modem is interoperable with DOCSIS-based headends and OSS equipment. In addition, the Level 2 approval demonstrates GI`s implementation of key data networking and network management features and validates the quality of the SURFboard modem.
GI will provide its SB2100 SURFboard cable modem to @Home Network affiliate systems. GI`s cable modems provide Internet access at speeds up to 50 times faster than a traditional 28.8 kbps modem. These modems allow the consumer to take advantage of the @Home content and uniquely high-speed data transport provided by cable networks.
"@Home`s approval of the SURFboard cable modem is a testament to its open standards-based architecture, reliability, and performance," said John Burke, Vice President-Marketing of GI`s Advanced Network & Telecom Systems (ANS/Telecom) business unit. "We are delighted to deliver high-speed Internet connection and support services equipment to @Home, helping them offer their subscribers reliable access to e-mail, newsgroups, search and navigation tools, online shopping, and more."
The SB2100 is part of GI`s SURFboard family of DOCSIS-based RF-return cable modems. Released by CableLabs in March 1997, DOCSIS calls for the interoperability of cable modems and associated networks manufactured by different suppliers. Interoperability speeds time to market by reducing risk for equipment purchasers and consumers and creates economies of scale for broadband network operators by creating multiple product sources.
General Instrument is a leading worldwide provider of integrated and interactive broadband access solutions, teaming with its business partners to lead the convergence of the Internet, telecommunications and video entertainment industries.
