Telstra denies breaching privacy
Wednesday June 1, 2005, 6:25 pm
Telstra has denied it had breached the privacy of an employee by monitoring her personal phone calls.
Labor backbencher Bob Sercombe told parliament that a Telstra manager had listened in to private telephone calls made by Kimberly Sund and even documented the topics of her conversations.

The manager then told Ms Sund none of her personal calls were of an urgent nature and told her to make them in her spare time, Mr Sercombe said.
A Telstra spokeswoman said the manager had overheard her personal phone calls and never used any form of technology to monitor them.
"Telstra is confident this matter does not represent any breach of the law or Telstra`s privacy policies and obligations," she said.
"No technologies were used to monitor this staff member`s telephone calls and her call records were not reviewed.
"In this instance it was no more than a case of a manager overhearing personal calls and noting that personal calls were being made.
"The manager genuinely believed there was an issue affecting the efficient running of the section and sought to raise it with the individual concerned in order to resolve the issue."
Mr Sercombe told parliament Ms Sund had emailed Telstra`s privacy officer on May 25 complaining that her manager told her that her personal calls were being monitored.
He also said he knew of two other cases where Telstra had abused technology by invading the privacy of employees.
"This is on the face of it, a significant abuse of Telstra`s technological power and it`s a further example of how Telstra, given its current management culture, conducts itself," he said.

Telstra sell-off closer
17jun05
LAWS paving the way for Telstra`s sale could be introduced to Parliament within two months, despite concerns about telecommunications services in the bush.
Communications Minister Helen Coonan said the Government had made no final decision on selling its remaining Telstra shares, but legislation allowing the $30 billion sale could be introduced to Parliament in August.
"You would think that it would be introduced in the early part of the second half of the year, probably August," she said.
"It might be later, but it`s obviously a matter in contemplation for the second half of the year."
The Government is expected to begin selling its 51.8 per cent shareholding in Telstra late next year in what will be the biggest float in Australia.
Senator Coonan said the Government would soon outline its plans for revamping regulations for the industry.
Telstra is expected to unveil at the same time its own ideas on a possible split of its wholesale and retail businesses.
The legislation comes as the National Farmers Federation renewed calls for Telstra`s privatisation to be delayed until its rural services improved.

Ziggy ends Telstra term
Outgoing Telstra chief executive Ziggy Switkowski will finish up with the company today.
His successor Solomon Trujillo has flagged a cost cutting program and a three-month strategic review of the company.
The Federal Government will also be given a report today suggesting that it should consider increasing the 35 per cent limit on foreign ownership in Telstra.
Advisers say the move could increase the Government`s chances of getting a better price for its 51.8 per cent stake in the company.
