Gold miners and bank to join forces
      By: Gareth Tredway
      Posted: `30-AUG-05 17:00` GMT © Mineweb 1997-2004

30-AUG-05 (Mineweb) -- In her speech to guests at Gold Fields`s Driefontein mine on Tuesday, Lindiwe Hendriks, South Africa`s Minister of Minerals and Energy, again urged the industry to promote downstream beneficiation in South Africa.

In response, Ian Cockerill, chief executive of Gold Fields, the world’s fourth largest gold miner, said that while Gold Fields was in the business of mining gold, it would probably not be very good at turning it into jewellery.

"We are gold producers, and sometimes we do not even do that very well," he said light heartedly, "so for us to produce jewellery could be asking a lot."

However, he went on to say that his company was looking at other ways to aid the downstream benificiation industry in South Africa.

One of these is an announcement, expected soon, by Gold Fields, AngloGold Ashanti, South Africa`s Standard Bank and another party to facilitate gold loans to the jewellery industry. This would "help finance" manufacturers through "innovative schemes" to help provide inventory (gold) to jewellers.

Gold Fields deaths in the spotlight

      Fri, 23 Sep 2005

Fri, 23 Sep 2005 -- Trade union Solidarity on Friday said in a statement that it was concerned about the number of fatal accidents that had taken place in 2005 at South African gold miner Gold Fields` Driefontein mine near Carletonville.

In November 2004, a worker was killed in the number four shaft after falling into an ore chute. In March 2005, a worker died in the number six shaft as a result of a seismic incident, the union said.

In May 2005, an earthquake in the number two shaft killed five workers. The May accident has been the worst in terms of fatalities during 2005 in South Africa`s mining industry, Solidarity said.

Shortly afterwards two workers died in the number four shaft, also due to a seismic incident, the union added.

In July, an earthquake killed a worker in the number seven shaft and in September a collapsed roof killed a worker in the Driefontein two shaft.

This was followed by a locomotive accident that killed a worker in the number one shaft, Solidarity said.

"The mine has become a battleground."

Da du offensichtlich kein Fan von Gold Fields bist, frage ich dich welche Alternativen du im Bereich Goldinvestments in Betracht ziehen würdest?

Gold Fields` reserves drop 18% on Kloof subtraction
      October 4, 2005

TEN months after taking hostile bidder Harmony to task for overstating its gold reserves, Gold Fields yesterday announced it was cutting its end-June gold reserves 18%.

“The quantity of reserves that any mining house has is the single most important measure the market has of valuing a company. Therefore, misstatements in, or manipulation of, reserve statements are generally viewed in a very serious light by regulators and shareholders alike...every ounce of reserves published by Gold Fields is supported by an independent audit opinion,” Gold Fields said at the peak of the takeover battle in November.

But yesterday, Gold Fields itself announced it also had to revise its reserves downwards, from 79-million to 65-million ounces.
