at least some good(?)/better news in Germany:
German November PMI 43.9 Versus October 42.0; 41.8 Expected
FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- Germany`s purchasing managers index for November again indicated economic contraction with a reading of 43.9, but the index`s unexpected rise from October prompted hopes that the economy is reaching a trough.
The November reading, from the BME/Reuters Purchasing Managers` survey Monday, was up from October`s reading of 42.0. Economists had anticipated a fall to 41.8.
But the index remains below the 50 level, which marks no change in business activity. Readings below 50 indicate a contraction, and the German PMI has been below 50 for eight months now.
While the rise may be encouraging, NTC Research, which compiles the survey, pointed out that it`s not yet obvious if the economy is about to turn around.
"It is important to note that it is too early to say whether the PMI bottomed out last month," NTC said. "November`s rise most likely reflects a clearer assessment of the state of the manufacturing economy after the general economic uncertainty evident following the events of Sept. 11."
