Cable & Wireless HKT Launches Broadband Internet Service for SMEs
Cable & Wireless HKT recently announced that its broadband Internet service,
NETVIGATOR@work 1.5M Ultra Line has now come on stream for use by
businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), via the
Company`s world-leading ATM-based broadband network.
The speed of the new service is up to 1.5Mbps, or 30 times faster than through
56k-modem dial-up and more than 20 times faster than through an ISDN line.
Besides enjoying reliable and cost-effective Internet services, users will have the choice of a
greater variety of demanding on-line applications to better meet their business needs. The larger
bandwidth will enable companies to employ more multimedia applications including video mailing,
video conferencing, on-line image service and on-line training.
Another advantage will be faster transmission of large files such as video animations, design and
drawings.
Allen Ma, Chief Executive Officer of Cable & Wireless HKT Interactive Multimedia Services, said:
"The launch of NETVIGATOR@work 1.5M Ultra Line will help SMEs leverage on and expand the
business opportunities the Internet brings. This is further proof of our determination to help increase
Hong Kong`s overall competitiveness by providing a secure and reliable environment to facilitate
e-commerce and on-line activities.
"Today`s announcement also underscores our commitment to realise the Company`s e-VISION of
making Hong Kong the Internet hub and e-commerce centre of Asia through pioneering technology
initiatives and competitive services that define the new way of doing business.
"Before launching this new service we conducted a trial among 50 SMEs from the trading,
manufacturing and retail industries. This gave us such positive and constructive feedback that we
are confident this new service and its comprehensive range of on-line applications will provide a
cost-effective business tool to stimulate further Internet usage and e-commerce among SMEs."
Cable & Wireless HKT broadband network will cover 90 percent of Hong Kong`s commercial
buildings by the end of this year. The Company has already invested $20 billion into Hong Kong
networks and plans to invest $5-$6 billion a year over the next 10 years on further expansion and
improvements.
NETVIGATOR@work 1.5M Ultra Line subscribers pay $350 for installation and $800 for the ATM
card. The monthly fee of $688 will enjoy 20 hours` free usage and a free e-mail account.
