Vancouver -- NovaGold Resource (NRI-T) has tabled an updated resource estimate of its Donlin Creek gold deposit in Alaska. The deposit`s measured and indicated resource has increased 92% to 4.4 million contained oz. and the inferred resource has increased by a whopping 161% to 6.2 million contained oz.

"Donlin Creek`s assay results from last year exceed our expectations and, no doubt, the gold mining industry`s expectations," says Rick Van Nieuwenhuyse, president of NovaGold. "This dramatic increase in the gold resource makes Donlin Creek on of the most exciting new North American gold plays in years. The deposit remains open and we are confident we will continue to significantly expand the resource."

The updated resource was prepared by MRDI of Vancouver and was based on extensive re-logging and three-dimensional modeling using 87,571 metres of core samples in 361 holes, 13,323 metres of reverse circulation samples from 117 drill holes and 21,337 metres of surface trench samples.

Using a gold price of US$250 per oz. and a 3.5-grams-gold-per-tonne cut off grade the measured and indicated resource tallies to 26.93 million tonnes grading 5.06 grams gold per tonne, or 4.38 million contained oz. The inferred resource stands at 36.8 million tonnes grading 5.22 grams gold, or 6.18 million contained oz.

Using a gold price of US$300 per oz. and a cut off grade of 2.5 grams gold per tonne the measured and indicated resource jumps to 52.7 million tonnes grading 4.03 grams gold, or 6.8 million contained oz. gold. The inferred resource tallies to 66.9 million tonnes grading 4.20 grams gold, or 9.0 million contained oz. gold.

At a gold price of US$350 per oz. and a cut off grade of 1.5 grams gold, the measured and indicated resource tallies to 104 million tonnes grading 3.0 grams gold, or 10 million contained oz. gold. The inferred resource jumps to 129 million tonnes grading 3.11 grams gold, or 12.9 million contained oz. gold.

NovaGold`s 2001 exploration program was successful at expanding the extent of the known resource. Of the 42 holes completed, 26 were offset holes that expanded the high-grade mineralization. The other 16 holes were in-fill holes that upgraded the inferred resource category to the measured and indicated category.

The higher-grade gold mineralization remains open at both the nearby Acma and Lewis targets. A follow-up drill program to further define and expand the extent of the mineralized system is scheduled to begin in the spring.

Engineering work on the project is currently underway and should wrap up by March. The study will help define the operating cost parameters and scale of the operation and direct the preliminary feasibility study. Metallurgical test work including bench-scale grinding, flotation, pressure oxidation, bio-oxidation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) cyanidation recovery demonstrate that 95%-to-98% of the gold is contained in the finer grained arsenopyrite mineralization. Gold recoveries are pegged at 90%-to-95% using a conventional sulfide flotation concentration followed by pressure oxidation of the concentrate and CIL cyanidation for gold recovery.

Donlin creek is situated in southwestern Alaska on 109 sq. km of private patented land. The project is 19 km north of a commercial barge site on the Kuskokwim River at the village of Crooked Creek. A government winter road connects the project to the barge site. The project has an all-season exploration camp for 75 people and a 1,500 metre runway that is directly serviced by commercial aircraft as large as the C-130 Hercules freighter. NovaGold stands to earn a 70% interest in the deposit by spending US$10 million on exploration development work within 10 years. The junior intends to fast track development of the project and complete these expenditures by the end of 2002 as part of the preliminary feasibility and project development work.

NovaGold doubles gold resources at Alaska deposit

TORONTO, Jan 24 (Reuters) - NovaGold Resources Inc. (Toronto:NRI.TO - news) said on Thursday it had doubled previous estimates of gold resources at its key Donlin Creek gold deposit in Alaska, promising increased attention on a stock that has rocketed 2,200 percent in a year.

An independent study by MRDI Vancouver increased Donlin`s measured and indicated resources at the 3.5 grams-a-tonne cut-off grade by 92 percent to 4.4 million ounces of gold grading 5.1 grams per tonne. Inferred resources were increased 161 percent to 6.2 million ounces of gold grading 5.2 grams a tonne.

The small gold exploration company negotiated an option to acquire 70 percent of Donlin Creek from gold major Placer Dome Inc (Toronto:PDG.TO - news) and agreed to spend $10 million on exploration and development within 10 years.

Stock in the company, which was at 13 Canadian cents at the start of 2001, was halted pending the release of the news. It closed on Wednesday at C$2.90.

Gold Deposit in Western Alaska Excites Explorers

Jan. 25--The estimated size of a gold deposit in Western Alaska has doubled, making it possibly the largest in the state`s history, officials said Thursday.
If the Donlin Creek deposit is developed, it could mean hundreds of year-round jobs for the rural area, said Greg Johnson, vice president of corporate development for NovaGold Resources Inc. The San Jose, Calif.-based company is a partner in Donlin and hopes to begin mining in three years, he said.

Tests show Donlin Creek holds 23 million ounces of gold, Johnson said, nearly three times the size of the Fort Knox deposit near Fairbanks.

At 3 grams of gold per ton, the Donlin deposit is three times as rich as Fort Knox too, Johnson said -- five times as rich in some places.

It needs to be rich for development to begin, because the site is remote. Power and transportation will be a challenge, said Stan Foo of the state Division of Mining, Land and Water.

More tests and an economic analysis are needed to decide whether the project will go.

A few square miles near the village of Crooked Creek, roughly between McGrath and Bethel on the Kuskokwim River, hold the densest deposits. Kuskokwim Village Corp. owns the surface land rights to the area, said KVC president Robert Ballow, and the Bethel-based regional Native company Calista Corp. owns the subsurface rights.

Established international mining company Placer Dome pulled away from the project as gold prices fell in recent years, focusing its exploration dollars around existing mines, said Johnson, a former Placer Dome employee.

He and two other former employees started NovaGold and worked out a deal to continue at the Donlin Creek project, looking for high-grade ore that would make mining profitable. They bought a gravel mine near Nome and used cash from that to finance Donlin exploration.

NovaGold put $2 million into exploration and development last year and will spend $8 million more this year, Johnson said.

Foo said obtaining permits to begin work could take two to three years.

If the variables fall into line and gold prices remain favorable, Johnson said, 500 jobs in construction, then mining, could be created. The mine could last 10 years, he said, or 50 if more gold is discovered nearby, which is common.

"Those are awfully exciting numbers," said George Gardner, president of Chiulista Camp Services Inc., a subsidiary of Calista that supported the exploration with temporary help, housekeeping and catering. "We`re kind of tired of exploring. We want to get to the next stage."

State labor economist Brigitta Windisch-Cole said 500 more jobs in the Bethel region would bump the area`s employment by 13 percent. And, she said, the average wage in the gold mining industry is $49,000, nearly twice that of the area.

"We`re lacking a Prudhoe Bay or Red Dog or Cook Inlet," Gardner said of Western Alaska. Developing natural resources is important for the cash-poor region and people, he said.

"Ain`t no social program better than somebody being able to have a job."
