Tele Atlas North America Lands Major Accounts in Telecommunications, Utilities and the U.S. Government
MCI Worldcom, PG & E, National Guard, NextJet Among Others Switch to the Premier Provider of Digital Map Databases
MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 30, 2002-- Leading telecommunications and other category leaders in the Fortune 500, as well as the U.S. government are now increasingly recognizing the stronger value of the superior map data provided by Tele Atlas North America. The company, now leading in global digital map database accuracy, announced that several major new customers including MCI Worldcom, PG & E, the U.S. Army National Guard and NextJet among many others have recently selected the company`s highly accurate digital map data. Each new customer will optimize the geocoding results and street information in a wide variety of projects central to their core business applications.
In the past year Tele Atlas North America completed a substantial phase of its repositioning of U.S. street map data. The repositioning effort as of now redefines and improves the positional accuracy of street data for 92 percent of the US population living in the top 100 urbanized areas. With the improved positional accuracy, customers have also gained superior geocoding accuracy, a critical function of map databases.
This repositioning effort has involved critical tasks such as moving road geometry to match the shape and actual position of roads as represented in source material from a wide variety of local sources as well as ortho-rectified aerial imagery and primary data collected by Tele Atlas` own substantial-sized data collection field force. In addition the effort adds any new geometry, removes spurious geometry in the Census TIGER data, and enhances dual carriageways that are represented in TIGER as single digitized lines.
``The word is out! Organizations across the country are now recognizing the value of using our positionally accurate map data in ways that will improve their bottom line,`` said Richard Selmeier, president of Tele Atlas North America. ``The decision of these `marquee customers` to move to Tele Atlas, further demonstrates the significance of the substantial investment we`ve been making, and will continue to make in improving map data accuracy. We`ve now become the primary market source for data of this accuracy.``
Among the many accounts Tele Atlas North America has secured within the last 90 days are:
MCI Worldcom: MCI, an operating unit of WorldCom, Inc., is a leading provider of residential voice, advanced messaging and commercial telecommunications services in the United States.
PG & E: Pacific Gas and Electric Company is one of the largest combination natural gas and electric utilities in the United States. The company provides natural gas and electric service to approximately 13 million people throughout a 70,000-square-mile service area in northern and central California.
Army National Guard: The Army National Guard (ARNG) is a reserve component of the US Army. The ARNG is composed of citizen soldiers -- civilians who serve their country on a part-time basis.
NextJet: NextJet, a logistics solution provider focused on the expedited transportation management sector, addresses key supply chain management challenges. NextJet`s patent-pending optimization and transportation management technology powers Next-Jet-Out(SM) delivery, overnight/late night delivery, rush ground delivery and service parts logistics. A privately held company based in Dallas, NextJet is backed by Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, United Airlines, American Airlines and Rare Medium Group. NextJet`s strategic partners include United Airlines, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
Sendero Group: Sendero Group combines the skills of high-tech professionals with orientation experts to put talking digital maps and navigation systems in the hands of people who are blind or visually impaired. Led by president and CEO Mike May who lost his sight at the age of 3, Sendero has developed state-of-the-art location applications for the BrailleNote(TM) and VoiceNote(TM) Global Positioning System in partnership with Pulse Data International and HumanWare.
Pace: Pace began operating in 1984 and is now the 14th largest bus service in the United States and Canada. Pace currently provides fixed bus routes, Dial-a-Ride services, vanpools and special-event buses throughout Chicago`s six-county suburban region. Pace owns and operates nine bus garages, and has contracts with both public and private carriers.
Urban Science: Urban Science, headquartered in Detroit, Mich. with ten offices around the globe, provides customized solutions for site, network, and customer analysis in the automotive, financial, and retail industries.
``Since Sept. 11, the demand on our office has been much greater,`` said Joshua Delmonico, National Guard`s GIS program manager for environmental programs. ``The National Guard had been using government sources and commercial data, but none provided the necessary accuracy. We were impressed with Tele Atlas` digital map database and its ability to precisely locate and match Global Positioning System-collected coordinates to the right street. Tele Atlas helped us increase our efficiency, lower our operating costs and use one common dataset for our decision making worldwide,`` continued Delmonico.
For Sendero Group, a provider of GPS and map enabled products for the visually impaired, accuracy is critical. ``Since our products help the visually impaired navigate their environments, the data had better be as accurate as possible. We are very impressed with Tele Atlas` digital map database and its ability to precisely locate and match GPS-collected coordinates to the right streets. The way in which the company provides their data enables our visually impaired customers to gain unprecedented access to their communities and beyond. Our decision to select Tele Atlas was an easy one,`` said Mike May, president and CEO, Sendero Group and HumanWare.
``With the single largest field data force in North America, we have gone to great lengths to make our North American data the best it can be -- with routing capabilities that support applications from the smallest roads to the thoroughfares of the largest metropolitan cities,`` added Selmeier. ``And we don`t stop there. Our global data sources, engineering support programs to facilitate customers` rapid adoption of our data, and our partnership commitment including highly flexible terms, are all designed to help make our customers successful. Tele Atlas has become the premier choice to enhance companies` bottom lines across all these key industries.``

Erste sprachgesteuerte geografische Datenbank
Das Navigationssystem hört aufs Wort
Von Siegfried Grass
Navigationssysteme mit Spracherkennung könnten bald
marktreif sein. Die Grundlagen dafür sind vorhanden: Die
erste geografische Datenbank mit integrierter
Spracherkennung ist fertig. Die Hersteller von
Navigationssystemen fürs Auto müssen die Technik nur
noch in marktreife Produkte umsetzen.
DÜSSELDORF. Das Auto wird bald aufs Wort gehorchen -
glaubt man Dirk Bossaert, Vorstandsmitglied bei Phonetic
Topographics, einer hundertprozentigen Tochtergesellschaft der
Tele Atlas NV. Bossaert prophezeit: "Navigationssysteme mit
Spracherkennung werden schon bald Realität." Unter "bald"
versteht Bossaert Ende 2002/Anfang 2003.
Voraussetzung für die sprachgesteuerte Navigation ist eine
geografische Datenbank mit integrierter Spracherkennung. Das
Tele-Atlas-Unternehmen hat eine solche Datenbank als weltweit
erster Hersteller realisiert. Sie wird unter dem Produktnamen
"PhoneMultiNet" vermarktet.
genannter Phoneme.
in fast jedem größeren Ort.
sprachgesteuerte Anwendungen ebnen. Mit der Produktion der
phonetischen Transkriptionen wurde in Deutschland,
Großbritannien, Frankreich und Italien jetzt begonnen. Tele Atlas
In
abbiegen".
So entwickelt Daimler-Chrysler in
