Goldman conference to highlight the real bottom line

LA QUINTA, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- When the Jacuzzis stopped gurgling at one of the most posh and popular investment conferences last year due to power brownouts, the water just didn`t seem right.

This time around, all the water jets should be blasting at the annual Goldman Sachs Technology Investment Symposium at the La Quinta Resort near Palm Springs, where about 200 companies will present to more than 1,000 institutional and high-net-worth investors.

Though the hot tubs will be bubbling, there`s no guarantee that attendees at this year`s show will be any less tepid than they were in 2001.

Coming off one of the worst tech investment years ever, executives presenting at this year`s Goldman show have many of the same concerns: the use of pro forma earnings and fuzzy accounting; the timing of an economic recovery; and the expensive price of many tech shares relative to their earnings.

"Any company that`s going to make an impression on me will talk about why they`re better than their competition, why their numbers are real, and how they`ll be able to increase their valuation," says Elliot Blumberg, fund manager with Vigilant LP in Los Angeles, who attended last year`s show.

Chief executives scheduled to face questions from Blumberg and an army of other fund managers include Scott McNealy, chief executive of Sun Microsystems (SUNW: news, chart, profile); Tom Engibous, CEO of Texas Instruments (TXN: news, chart, profile); and Mike Ruettgers, executive chairman of EMC.

Watching the numbers

Many of the symposium`s presentations will focus more on sales and earnings this year than products and strategies, which were the main topics of previous shows, Blumberg says.

Siebel Systems (SEBL: news, chart, profile) is among the companies that is expected to give the skinny about its recently reported fourth quarter, while giving more color on its sales goals. Siebel recently touted that the company has increased its cash and investments to $1.66 billion in the fourth quarter from $1.15 billion a year ago. Meanwhile, Siebel`s deferred revenue increased to $241 million from $231 million in the previous quarter.

"Our numbers are not pro forma. They are what you see," said Kenneth Goldman, Siebel`s chief financial officer, in a speech in San Francisco last week.

Following Siebel, Priceline.com (PCLN: news, chart, profile) is scheduled to present at the conference on Tuesday, a day after the company releases its earnings report.

The Internet retailer is expected to break even on revenue of $225.48, according to a survey of analysts conducted by Thomson Financial/First Call. CEO Richard Braddock is expected to elaborate on earnings targets for 2002.

One group of companies that could create a buzz at this year`s Goldman show is the storage group, Blumberg says. Veritas Sofware (VRTS: news, chart, profile) executives make an appearance Monday, StorageTek (STK: news, chart, profile) executives will make their pitch Tuesday, followed by a speech by EMC`s Ruettgers (EMC: news, chart, profile) on Wednesday.

Some of the heaviest crowds will be drawn to the security-related tech companies, Blumberg adds. Internet Security Systems (ISSX: news, chart, profile) will present early Monday, Check Point Software (CHKP: news, chart, profile) on Tuesday, and Netegrity (NETE: news, chart, profile) on Wednesday.

"You cannot help but to look at security these days," Blumberg said. About 75 percent of President Bush`s State of the Union Address was about security."

Analysten erwarten ein ausgeglichenes Ergebnis von 0,00 Dollar je Aktie. Verglichen mit dem Vorjahr, als ein Verlust von 15 Cents je Aktie anfiel, wäre das eine beachtliche Steigerung. Im Vergleich zum dritten Quartal allerdings ein Rückgang von 3 Cents je Aktie.

Beim Umsatz werden 225 Mio. Dollar erwartet. Dies würde nur knapp unter dem Vorjahreswert von 228 Mio. Dollar liegen.

Experten rechnen damit, dass Priceline durch die in der vergangenen Woche bekannt gegebene Kooperation mit eBay, die Umsätze in den kommenden Quartalen wieder steigern können wird.
