Encanto Networks Expands Internet Strategy, Partners With SCO; Leverages Small Business Technology for OEM Licensing and ASP Hosting

      MONDAY, JANUARY 24 2000 8:31 AM EST

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan 24, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Encanto Networks, Inc., the leading provider of small business network services and Internet appliances, today unveiled an expanded business strategy to more fully meet the evolving needs of small businesses eager to conduct e-commerce over the Web. The company announced plans to forge major OEM technology and applications service provider (ASP) partnerships. Encanto`s initial OEM technology agreement is with SCO (Nasdaq:SCOC) to extend business through the global Internet. (See related release.)

Under the agreement, SCO will bundle Encanto`s InstantConnect SM technology with SCO operating systems to Internet-enable small to medium size businesses adopting the cost-effective Unix OS for e-commerce and other Internet applications.

"From day one, Encanto`s mission has been to remove the cost and complexity barriers to enable small businesses to participate in the Internet economy," said Bob Frankenberg, president and CEO of Encanto. "Leading technology vendors are recognizing the potential of this multi-billion dollar market, and by teaming with these firms to provide flexible applications and services, Encanto enables their small business customers to capitalize on e-commerce."

Encanto is negotiating partnerships with services partners who will couple their online applications with Encanto`s to deliver innovative services over the Internet. These online services include options for small businesses requiring assistance with public relations, banner advertising, direct mail, recruiting, credit, sales, market research, tech support, training, business planning and travel. Applications that could be offered through such partnerships include easy, thin-server Web-building software, email, e-commerce, Internet access gateways, remote diagnostics updates, and integrated messaging. Encanto recently announced a partnership with DigitalWork.com, a small business services vendor, to provide some of these online services.

Leading market research firms see the small business market for Internet applications as big, growing and largely untapped. According to Dataquest, the market for Internet-delivered applications is expanding at 22 percent per year and is expected to reach $112 billion by 2002. IDC analyst Ray Boggs has termed the small business Internet market the "birth of e-commerce," and reports almost two million small businesses are now online. In addition, small businesses and home offices account for about 24 percent of all IT spending in the U.S., for a total of more than $50 billion this year, Boggs reports.

SCO Expands Tarantella to High-Volume Markets

New Tarantella Express Geared at Workgroup and Departmental Users
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- SCO (Nasdaq: SCOC - news) today introduced Tarantella Express, the second product announced in its new line of Tarantella web-enabling software. Tarantella Express is designed to provide workgroup and departmental users with easy web-enabling, management and integration services for server-based applications, and is available through SCO`s worldwide channel of over 15,000 resellers, distributors, systems integrators, and computer manufacturers.

      (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19990421/SCOLOGO )
Tarantella Express, Designed for Smaller Computing Environments SCO designed Tarantella Express as a rich subset of the Tarantella Enterprise II software. Tarantella Express is a powerful, yet easier-to-install and administer web-enabling solution to meet the needs of smaller and less complex workgroup and departmental environments. With Tarantella Express environments of up to 45 concurrent users can access Windows and UNIX System applications residing on up to four application servers.

Tarantella Express includes new application and platform wizards to provide faster installation. The platform wizards give IT and resellers acting as ``virtual IT administrators`` a simple-to-use method to take advantage of operating system specific features. The application wizards provide access to common applications such as Microsoft Office right out of the box, so that administrators can quickly and easily deploy and manage these productivity tools.

``Tarantella Express allows organizations to extend server-based computing to more desktop users,`` said Laurie McCabe, Service Director at Summit Strategies, Inc. ``Workgroup and departmental environments that want to make the most of the e-commerce explosion will benefit from Tarantella Express and its superior Internet and web access for Windows and UNIX server solutions.``

``This new release of Tarantella is the ideal solution for the system administrator who wants to centrally manage and deploy Windows applications in heterogeneous computing environment,`` said Keith McAuliffe, Compaq VP. ``Tarantella Express is a win-win proposition. It provides users with instant access to Windows and other applications, regardless of the client type.``

Tarantella Express and the SCO Channel

``SCO resellers can offer Tarantella Express as part of a more powerful and affordable server-based computing solution than solutions based on competing products,`` said Peter Bondar, SCO vice president of Tarantella marketing. ``They can use Tarantella Express to enhance their existing UNIX System expertise, and quickly create full-featured web-enabling solutions for their departmental and workgroup customers. This provides them with controlled access to Windows and UNIX System applications in a very secure and cost effective manner.``

``I`ve been excited about Tarantella since SCO first introduced this innovative technology a few years ago,`` said SCO Premier Reseller Ron Herman, president of Blue Chip Computer Systems. ``Tarantella Express helps me offer an affordable solution to quickly deploy and manage server-based applications for my customers. It is so easy to use that I basically just make sure that the browser works, and Tarantella Express does the rest!``

      Pricing and Delivery

Tarantella Express pricing starts at $745 for 5 concurrent users accessing both Windows and UNIX System applications, additional users can be added for approximately $99 per user. Tarantella Express for the SCO OpenServer operating system will begin shipping during February, 2000, and for the UnixWare 7 operating system during April, 2000. Additional versions are planned for other popular server operating systems.

      The Tarantella Product Line

Tarantella Express is the second product announced in the new SCO Tarantella line of web-enabling software. SCO also offers Tarantella Enterprise II for enterprises and other organizations who require additional scalability and features for deploying and managing server-based Windows, mainframe and UNIX applications. Later this quarter, SCO will announce another Tarantella product designed specifically for the Application Service Provider (ASP) market.

SCO`s Electronic License Deliveries Increase Four-Fold with SeraNova Designed Online Partner Store

EDISON, N.J., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- SeraNova, the Internet services subsidiary of Intelligroup, Inc., (Nasdaq: ITIG) announced that the e-commerce site it built with SCO, (Nasdaq: SCOC) the world`s leading supplier of UNIX server operating systems headquartered in Santa Cruz, California, has seen a more than four-fold increase in product licenses delivered over the web in the past year.

"We worked with SeraNova to design and implement an online Partner Store," said Helene Bouchard, VP, World Wide Customer Delivery Systems for SCO, "where distributors could purchase SCO product licenses electronically, as they needed them, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Store`s been a big success. In the old business model, SCO packaged licenses with products, or separately and distributors had to stock and pay for a wide variety of products to meet the needs of their customers. Using the new online Partner Store helps SCO and distributors save time and money."

The Partner Store allows SCO to offer a wider range of licenses. "The electronic licenses give us much more flexibility," said Bouchard. "We can fine tune the Partner Store with just a few keystrokes to accommodate customer needs. In addition, by the end of this quarter SCO will be offering physical media kits to the Partner Store. SeraNova is a solutions-driven company and built a state-of-the-art system for us. They worked hard to understand our needs and develop a Partner Store that met all of our expectations."

"Effective channel management is a critical success factor in many industries today, whether it`s hi-tech resellers, automotive dealers, or insurance reps," said Rajan Nair, Chief Operating Officer of SeraNova. "The SCO Partner Store shows how effective business-to-business Internet solutions can be in empowering channel partners."
