There`s something about blue LEDs and recordable DVD: Along with the
now requisite sleek silver casing, the DV-SR100 has both a blue LED
panel readout on a pale background and a nice, shiny blue light under
the DVD tray. That`s Sony`s fault, of course, kicking off the craze
with the blue LED on its PS2 entertainment console. The hybrid
recorder will record for 1 hour in fine recording mode and up to six
hours in EP mode. The super-smooth progressive scan means your
pictures will be virtually flicker free and there`s digital noise
reduction to boot. Of course, the great benefit of having both DVD-RW
and DVD-R capability is that you can practice to your heart`s content
with this new technology - record and re-record ad infinitum to the
DVD-RW discs and then when you know you`ve got it right, lay it down
to the once-only DVD-R type. No degree in rocket science required!

input/ouput and progressive scan circuitry. The DVR-3000 was jointly
developed with Sharp, as we mentioned, so the two players share many
cool features (auto start recording, VR and video recording modes,

Symphony3 is a top-of-the-line product adhering to the standards of SDMI - the Secure Digital Music Initiative. With forward compatibility and compliance with encryption from two DRMs, Liquid Audio and WMA, SyMPhony3 is a unique and contemporary portable music player for the new digital download era. SDMI compliance rules were devised so that the music industry could put out music by major artists without the risk of copyright violation.

TOKYO, Feb 19, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Nine leading companies today announced that they have jointly established the basic specifications for a next generation large capacity optical disc video recording format called "Blu-ray Disc." The Blu-ray Disc enables the recording, rewriting and play back of up to 27 gigabytes (GB) of data on a single sided single layer 12cm CD/DVD size disc using a 405nm blue-violet laser. The companies that established the basic specifications for the Blu-ray Disc are: Hitachi Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Pioneer Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, and Thomson Multimedia.

In addition to actively promoting the new format throughout the Industry, the nine companies listed above plan to begin licensing the new format as soon as specifications are completed. Licensing is expected to start around spring 2002.

By employing a short wavelength blue violet laser, the Blu-ray Disc successfully minimizes its beam spot size by making the numerical aperture (NA) on a field lens that converges the laser 0.85. In addition, by using a disc structure with a 0.1mm optical transmittance protection layer, the Blu-ray Disc diminishes aberration caused by disc tilt. This also allows for disc better readout and an increased recording density. The Blu-ray Disc`s tracking pitch is reduced to 0.32um, almost half of that of a regular DVD, achieving up to 27 GB high-density recording on a single sided disc.

Because the Blu-ray Disc utilizes global standard "MPEG-2 Transport Stream" compression technology highly compatible with digital broadcasting for video recording, a wide range of content can be recorded. It is possible for the Blu-ray Disc to record digital high definition broadcasting while maintaining high quality and other data simultaneously with video data if they are received together. In addition, the adoption of a unique ID written on a Blu-ray Disc realizes high quality copyright protection functions.

The Blu-ray Disc is a technology platform that can store sound and video while maintaining high quality and also access the stored content in an easy-to-use way. This will be important in the coming broadband era as content distribution becomes increasingly diversified. The nine companies involved in the announcement will respectively develop products that take full advantage of Blu-ray Disc`s large capacity and high-speed data transfer rate. They are also aiming to further enhance the appeal of the new format through developing a larger capacity, such as over 30GB on a single sided single layer disc and over 50GB on a single sided double layer disc. Adoption of the Blu-ray Disc in a variety of applications including PC data storage and high definition video software is being considered.


"Blu-ray Disc" Key Characteristics

Andy - auf Pioneer bin ich eigentlich mehr oder weniger nur nur zufällig über den neuen Sharp DVD-RW gestoßen, der wahrscheinlich baugleich zum Pioneer DVD-RW ist.

Was deine Charts angeht: ich muss ehrlich sagen, ich habe mit Charts nicht soviel am Hut und verstehe das auch nicht (habe mir auf auch noch nie die Mühe gemacht, das zu verstehen!). Meiner Meinung macht das Charten eines OTC-BB Wertes sowieso keinen Sinn, weil der Kurs eines OTC-BB Wertes vor allem durch die Firma selbst (d.h. die Finanzen, die Produkte, die PRs) bestimmt wird und nicht durch die Motivation der Anleger.

Intels Developer Forum in San Francisco beginnt

Heute eröffnet Intels CEO Craig Barrett das IDF Spring 2002 in San Francisco, die Frühjahrsausgabe von Intels Entwicklerforum. Mehr als 5000 Teilnehmer, hauptsächlich Entwickler und Pressevertreter, finden sich zweimal im Jahr ein, um Neuigkeiten über Prozessoren, Speichertechniken, Netzwerkkomponenten einzusammeln.

Intels Entwicklungschef Pat Gelsinger verspricht "lots and lots of McKinley", dem Nachfolger des ziemlich erfolglosen 64-Bit-Prozessors Itanium. Die meisten Details zu McKinley sind spätestens seit dem ISSCC Anfang Februar bekannt, zu Chipsätzen und Ähnlichem fehlen jedoch noch Informationen.

Das traditionelle "Memory Update" von Intel-Fellow Pete Williams bringt vermutlich Klarheit über die Zukunft von Rambus: So plant Intel zwar unter dem Codenamen Tehama-E einen Nachfolger des i850-Chipsatzes (Rambus, für Pentium 4), doch nur der Frontside-Bus bekommt einen von 100 auf 133 MHz beschleunigten Takt (FSB533), das Rambus-Interface bleibt bei 100 MHz (PC800-Module). Auch soll er 4i-RDRAM angeblich nun doch nicht unterstützen.

Erwartet werden ebenso weitere Details zur XScale-Familie, die hauptsächlich in PDAs und ähnlichen Geräten Verwendung finden. Intel wird wohl wie auf jedem IDF einen übertakteten Prozessor zeigen, um die Leistungsfähigkeit der nächsten Speedgrades zu demonstrieren. Auf dem Herbst-IDF war dies ein Pentium 4 mit 2 GHz gewesen, ein Prozessor, den man mittlerweile kaufen kann. (jow/c`t)

Zur CeBIT die XBox von Microsoft, im Mai Nintendos GameCube: Dem Platzhirsch auf dem Spielekonsolenmarkt, Sonys Playstation 2, droht jetzt auch in Deutschland eine starke Konkurrenz. Doch die einzelnen Geräte unterscheiden sich erheblich voneinander, schreibt c`t in der aktuellen Ausgabe 5/02.

Um der Playstation 2 ernsthaft Paroli bieten zu können, hat Microsoft einen ganz eigenen Weg eingeschlagen: Als erste Spielekonsole ist die Xbox im Inneren komplett aus PC-Komponenten aufgebaut. Die eingebaute Festplatte ermöglicht die Speicherung von umfangreichen Spielständen, was bisher nur auf dem PC möglich war. Mit Online-Spielen gegen Mitspieler aus aller Welt will Microsoft mit der Xbox eine weitere Domäne des PCs erobern. Doch dabei setzt Microsoft zum einen auf Spieler mit DSL-Anschluss, zum anderen sollen Spiele für den Online-Spaß erst im Sommer auf den Markt kommen. Das heißt, man muss bei der Xbox viel Geld für Hardware bezahlen, die man noch gar nicht richtig nutzen kann.

Wer die Xbox auch als DVD-Player einsetzen möchte, muss zum Grundpreis von 479 Euro noch 50 Euro für das Playback Kit und zusätzlich 30 Euro für ein spezielles Kabel bezahlen, wenn das Gerät dabei Digital-Surround-Sound wiedergeben soll. Da liegt der Preis von knapp 300 Euro für die Playstation 2 mit eingebautem DVD-Player weitaus niedriger. Mit 249 Euro präsentiert sich der GameCube als die günstigste Konsole. Jedoch beschränkt sich das Gerät von Nintendo rein auf das Spielvergnügen. Von den DVD-Eigenschaften der anderen Geräte sollte man aber auch nicht zu viel erwarten: Die beiden Konsolen sind im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen DVD-Playern im Betrieb weitaus lauter, so dass bei einem ruhigen Film der Hörspaß schnell vergeht.

Der Spiele-PC-Markt gerät jetzt zunehmend unter Druck. Zwar behält er vorerst seine Domäne bei den Online-Spielen, und die Spiele selbst sind in der Regel deutlich preiswerter. Doch auf dem Konsolenmarkt steht bald ein Preiskampf bevor. (ad/c`t)

3D-Spiele und Video auf dem Handy

Nur wenige Tage nach der Aufgabe des Grafik-Chips "Kyro" gaben ST Microelectronics und Imagination Technologies heute bekannt, dass sie gemeinsam Grundlagentechnologien für mobiles Multimedia-Entertainment entwickeln wollen. Die beiden Unternehmen kündigten ihre "Pocket Multimedia Platform" (PMM) auf der 3GSM World in Cannes an. Die PMM soll es ermöglichen, portable Geräte bei minimalem Strombedarf mit Audio- und Videoplayback sowie 3D-Grafik auszustatten.

Kern der Pocket Multimedia Platform soll ein stromsparender RISC-Prozessor sein, der Grafikchip PowerVR MBX. Bei einem Takt von 120 MHz soll der PowerVR MBX bis zu vier Millionen Dreiecke pro Sekunde verarbeiten. Er wird im 0,13-Micron-Verfahren gefertigt und ist nur sechs Quadratmillimeter groß. Bei einem Takt von 50 MHz soll er weniger als 60 mW verbrauchen.

Die Bonsai-Version des PowerVR-Chips besitzt grundsätzlich die gleiche Architektur wie der große Bruder -- das soll Software-Herstellern die Anpassung bestehender Konsolenspiele und Anwendungen an die neue Umgebung erleichtern. Die PowerVR-Architektur enthält Beschleunigungsfunktionen für 2D, 3D und Video und kam unter anderem bei der Sega Dreamcast zum Einsatz. (ghi/c`t)

CES: Microsoft findet Unterstützer für Windows Media

Bereits 10 Stunden vor Bill Gates Eröffungsrede am Vorabend der CES ließ der japanische Unterhaltungselektronik-Riese Matsushita die Katze aus dem Sack: Zukünftig wird das Unternehmen unter seinen Markennamen Panasonic Windows Media unterstützen -- einerseits durch eine entsprechende Wiedergabe-Fähigkeit der DVD-Player, andererseits durch die Produktion entsprechender Encoder- und Decoder-Chips. Beschränkt ist die Zusammenarbeit im ersten Schritt auf den MP3-Konkurrenten Windows Media Audio, kurz WMA. Später könne aber auch Windows Media Video hinzukommen, erklärte ein Matsushita-Sprecher. Vorher müssten allerdings noch einige Fragen bezüglich des Digital Rights Managements geklärt werden, das WMV (wie auch WMA) unterstützt.

Und Panasonic ist nicht der einzige, der auf WMA-Wiedergabe als Verkaufsargument setzt: Wie bereits berichtet, werden auch Samsungs kommende DVD-Player WMA-Files abspielen können, ebenso die neuen Car-CD-Receiver von Pioneer.

Insoweit durfte man von Bill Gates` Präsentation nicht mehr allzu viele sensationelle Neuigkeiten erwarten. Und doch war die Demonstration der neuen Geräte während der Rede aufschlussreich: So benötigte Panasonics erster WMA-fähiger DVD-Player DVD-RV32 recht lange, um die Demoscheibe mit 365 Stücken einzulesen. Über den Namen des Interpreten und den Titel hinausgehende Informationen zeigte das Gerät zudem nicht an, sodass beispielsweise die Bitrate des angespielten Stückes ein Geheimnis blieb. Echte Überraschungen boten schließlich zwei Demos: So spielte Gates ein WMA-File mit einer Datenrate von 1884 kbit/s ab, das bemerkenswerten Mehrkanal-Sound bot -- Dolby und DTS dürfte dies kaum freuen. Weitere Aussagen machte Gates über das Format, welches vom Player als "WMA Professional" identifiziert wurde, allerdings nicht.

Dafür gab es noch eine WMV-Datei mit einem Ausschnitt aus dem Disney-Film "Dinosaurier" mit einer Bitrate von 3387 kbit/s, der in der Bildqualität laut Microsofts Steven Guggenheimer selbst die DVD übertreffen sollte. So gut die Qualität auch war, abschließend beurteilen ließ sich dies unter den im Las Vegas Convention Center vorherrschenden Bedingungen nicht -- und die Vorführungen ließen die Frage offen, wohin Microsoft mit Windows Media noch strebt.
