Pacific Internet has signed a strategic deal with NEC to deliver a new business grade broadband DSL service over NEC`s NEXTEP network in Australia. The first services will be launched in June 2002.
As a result of the deal, Pacific Internet said it will now be able to offer broadband DSL customers service level agreements for network uptime.
The partnership with NEXTEP paves the way for Pacific Internet to deliver a range of new business services including virtual private networks (VPNs), e-commerce, voice over IP (VoIP), media streaming, video-on-demand and data convergence over broadband DSL.
Dennis Muscat, managing director of Pacific Internet Australia, said: "Pacific Internet premium business DSL will offer the reliability of traditional ISDN and Frame Relay that businesses demand, but at a fraction of the price and with faster throughput, with speeds up to 6Mbps."
The NEXTEP network is the second-largest on the east coast, covering the main metropolitan areas of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Australian DSL winning the wooden spoon
Thursday, May 9, 2002 04:20:40 AM - Australasian Business Intelligence
May 09, 2002 (ZDNet.com.au - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australians show little
enthusiasm for Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) services. According to Dennis
Muscat, the CEO of Pacific Internet, marketing of broadband services should be
based on their value to clients. He said that in South Korea, 13 per cent of
people have broadband access, while in Australia only 0.59 per cent of people
have it. Muscat pointed out that an Integrated Services Digital Network
connection, running at 256/256kbps, costs $A4992 a year, while a 1500/256kbps
broadband DSL connection costs only $A3248. Phil Sykes, the CEO at Request DSL,
says that prospective customers are reluctant to subscribe to DSL services for
fear of being cheated by DSL providers.
