Ho, ho Jancker scheint auch weltweit der Inbegriff des fußballerischen Totalversagers zu sein.

Mit solchen Nieten müssen wir zur WM :(:(:(

      ---
      Tim Hobbs reporting

A hat-trick from Miroslave Klose gave rampant Germany an almighty head start in Group E at the expense of Saudi Arabia.

The Kaiserslautern striker buried three headers and Michael Ballack, Carsten Jancker, Thomas Linke, Oliver Bierhoff and Bernd Schneider completed the rout as Rudi Voller`s men moved ahead of Cameroon and the Republic of Ireland in ominous fashion.

The resounding win was finals` the biggest since Hungary`s 10-1 success over El Salvador in 1982 and also went a long way to silencing the critics who had been on their back in the build-up to Korea/Japan in the wake of their Munich mauling at the hands of England.

Klose, who has now netted a tidy 11 times in 13 internationals, was on the bench on that night, but proved he is good enough to perhaps fill the fabled World Cup boots of Gerd Muller, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Juergen Klinsmann.

Twice in five minutes he headed home crosses from the left, first pouncing after Jancker had caused confustion in trying an ungamely overhead kick at Ballack`s ball in from a ridiculously unguarded left wing.

The second came in almost identical circumstances with Ballack again the provider and the Saudi defence again showing an aerial ineptitude that will have Mick McCarthy and Niall Quinn licking their lips ahead of their June 11 showdown.

Ballack himself was the next to profit in the air, ghosting in characteristically at the far post to steer Christian Ziege`s pin-point cross past the helpless Mohammed Al-Daeyea, who can have had few worse days in an international career that now spans 169 games.

The Saudi defence was so bad, even Jancker put his name on the scoresheet, bundling home a Klose flick to eclipse a dreadful domestic season that saw him fail to find the net for Bayern Munich.

But even that historic moment could not detract from Klose`s classic finishing, the in-form 23-year-old climbing to guide home a 70th-minute Bernd Schneider cross, this time from the right where Redha Tukar was proving as poor at defending as Hussein Sulimani on the other side.

Linke was the next to profit from the defensive disarray as he climbed highest to head home Ziege`s inswinging corner, while sub Bierhoff claimed the seventh with a low drive from 20 yards as Germany found that the middle was as much theirs as either flank.

And the Saudi`s humilation was complete in stoppage time when Schneider beat his team-mates to the ball to curl home a 25-yard free-kick - although for once, the Saudis did their job in the wall. For what it was worth.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Miroslav Klose (Germany)
Shooting fish in a barrel it may have been, but Klose showed a clinical touch that could yet see Germany emerge as a force in world football again.

      Germany: 1-Oliver Kahn; 21-Christoph Metzelder, 5-Carsten Ramelow (16-Jens Jeremies 46), 2-Thomas Linke; 22-Torsten Frings, 8-Dietmar Hamann, 19-Bernd Schneider, 13-Michael Ballack, 6-Christian Ziege; 11-Miroslav Klose (7-Oliver Neuville 77), 9-Carsten Jancker (20-Oliver Bierhoff 67).

      Saudi Arabia : 1-Mohammed Al-Deayea; 3-Redha Tukar, 13-Hussein Sulimani, 4-Abdullah Sulaiman, 12-Ahmed Dokhi; 16-Khamis Al-Owairan (7-Ibrahim Al-Shahrani 46), 8-Mohammed Noor, 18-Nawaf Al-Temyat (14-Abdulaziz Al-Khathran 46), 17-Abdallah Al-Waked; 9-Sami Al-Jaber, 20-Al-Hassan Al-Yami (15-Abdullah Jumaan 77)

      Referee : Ubaldo Aquino (Paraguay)
Linesmen: Miguel Giacomuzzi (Paraguay) and Michael Ragoonath (Trinidad)

It is just awesome to see those beautiful goals. Great job! As far as I know, however, the first easy going does not always guarantee the positive mood during the whole period of World Cup.

Let`s hope Germany progress now, hopefully meet England and take some revenge for their poor performance in the qualifying group

      Chris Semple, Scotland

One should not make the mistake and overestimate today`s result. Never the less I think that the German team is better than it`s said to be. I doubt their chance to become World Champions - but who would have expected Senegal to beat France?

One should never forget, that Germany is the most successful team following Brazil in the entire world - and they were always famous for their ability to fight.
      Tobias Güldenring, Germany

It`s not that easy scoring eight goals in a World Cup game. So just enjoy the goals and don`t criticize a great match from the Germans. Beside, the Saudis won a game against Senegal 3-2 and if you watched the World Cup opener then you know who Senegal are.
      Martin, Slovenia

You maybe can`t read a great deal into this individual result against a poor side but you can never ever write the Germans off in big tournaments. Recent form means nothing to a team like Germany, they will be full of confidence now and this sets up a great tie with Ireland next.

Let`s hope Germany progress now, hopefully meet England and take some revenge for their poor performance in the qualifying group.
      Chris Semple, Scotland

When Germany starts slowly, they go to final. This time they have started with bang, which means reaching up to second round.

Just don`t be too mouthy until you have done that to some serious opposition

      Keith, Germany

Everyone seems to have forgotten Germany`s results going into this tournament. Yes they lost to Wales (who have a good team), but they also recorded heavy victories against USA, Israel and Ukraine among others.

They can obviously score goals against decent opposition.
      Stewart MacPhee, Scotland

You look at the comments here posted by Germans and you would think they have already won the World Cup. An impressive display...yes, an impressive result...yes, an impressive opponent...no way.

Just don`t be too mouthy until you have done that to some serious opposition.
      Keith, Germany

I didn`t share the extremely pessimistic views of most football experts on the German team, but I am not yet ready to get overexcited either. They did well tonight, let`s keep going.
      Werder Bremen, Thailand

      8-0! It`s fantastic. Viva Germany!
