Cycling-Lithuanian rider`s wife arrested in doping probe

GRENOBLE, France, July 29 (Reuters) - French police have
arrested the wife of Lithuanian cyclist Raimondas Rumsas, who
won third place in the Tour de France, as part of a probe into
suspected doping, a judicial source said on Monday.
Edita Rumsas was arrested after customs officers performing
a routine check on her car in the Alpine town of Chamonix on
Sunday morning found drugs which they are having analysed, the
source said.
Rumsas rides for the Italian team Lampre-Daikin, whose Paris
hotel rooms were raided by French police and customs officers
after the Tour ended on Sunday.
A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said at the time that
authorities had acted under "strong suspicion" but the results
of the search were "not convincing".
Rumsas, 30, who won the Tour of Lombardy in 2000, was taking
part in the Tour de France for the first time. His wife has been
transferred to police facilities in the southern city of Lyon,
where she was due to give evidence on Monday.
This year`s Tour de France, won for the fourth time by
American Lance Armstrong, was free of major doping scandals,
although the recent Giro saw a number of high-profile cases such
as Italian favourite Stefano Garzelli who failed a dope test.
The 2001 Giro was also overshadowed by police raids at team
hotels in San Remo -- resulting in a riders` protest.

Cycling-Rumsas suspended by team after police swoop

PARIS, France, July 29 (Reuters) - Italian cycling team
Lampre-Daikin have suspended rider Raimondas Rumsas from racing
after French police found drugs in his wife`s car at the end of
the Tour de France in Paris on Sunday night.
Third-placed Rumsas`s wife Edite was stopped by police at
the French border in Chamonix after suspicious drugs were found
in her car and the press officer of the team was searched and
questioned for five hours in Paris on Sunday evening.
The team`s statement on Monday said: "The Lampre-Daikin team
has immediately suspended Raimondas Rumsas from any sporting
activity. If the rider is eventually found to be responsible,
the Lampre-Daikin team will immediately sack him."
Rumsas, from Lithuania, finished third behind American Lance
Armstrong in the Tour de France which ended in Paris on Sunday.
