MTNL to list on NYSE around March 15

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) will list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange
around March 15, the state-run firm`s chairman and managing director said today. When
asked when MTNL would list on the NYSE, Srinivas Rajagopalan said: "Around 15 March."

On January 25, Rajagopalan told Reuters the company`s American depositary receipt (ADR)
listing on the NYSE was on schedule and was expected in six weeks time. Last month local
media reports suggested that MTNL`s listing had been deferred along with a Central
government proposal to disinvest about a 5% stake of the equity it holds in the firm.

MTNL offers fixed-line phone and Internet access services in New Delhi and Mumbai. It
intends to start a cellular phone service soon. The NYSE listing will enable holders of MTNL`s
global depositary receipts (GDRs) to trade on the U.S. exchange. But, it will retain its listing on
the London Stock Exchange and the investors will have the option to convert their GDRs to
ADRs.

MTNL raised Rs16.35bn ($375mn) in November 1997 through a GDR issue.

Mal `ne dumme Frage: Mahanagar kostet heute im Bombay 350,55 Rupien. Das sind laut Yahoo-Devisenrechner 8,11 EUR. Zwei Aktien sind eine GDR. Die kostet bei uns aber bis zu 24,50 EUR. Das ist ein Aufschlag von satten 50%. Bei Videsh z.B. beträgt der Aufschlag nur ca. 10%, womit man leben kann. Auch nimmt mich Wunder, daß der Kurs regelmäßig um mehr als 8% täglich steigt, obwohl der Anstieg in Indien auf max. 8% begrenzt ist.

Habe ich da falsch gedacht, feiert hier die Euphorie `ne Party oder wollen die mit einer abgesoffenen Goldmine in Australien fusionieren. Das würde die Prämie nämlich rechtfertigen.

New Delhi, Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. shares surged 7.4 percent
after the company said it may tie up with Satyam Infoway Ltd., India`s biggest private Internet
service provider, and Rediff.com, to improve its web content.

The state-controlled phone company plans to get access to content from Satyam`s web portal
Satyam Online.com and Rediff.com`s website, the country`s first information and shopping web
site, to improve its Bharat On-line service and help attract more subscribers.

`I am weak in content,` said S. Rajagopalan, chairman and managing director of MTNL. `I want to
improve on-line content,` by tying up with other content providers.

The company is hoping to get a bigger share of the growing number of Internet users in the
country and the opportunities for revenues from e-commerce, analysts said.

There will be an estimated 2.6 million web users in the country by the end of this year, up from
535,000 at the end of 1998, according to the National Association of Software and Service
Companies. At present, MTNL has annual sales of 50 million rupees from Internet services.

The state-controlled company that provides fixed-line phone service in the two of India`s biggest
cities hopes to get permission from the government to set up its own Internet gateway access
this week, said Rajagopalan.

At present, all Internet service providers including MTNL, access the Internet through Videsh
Sanchar Nigam Ltd., the state- controlled monopoly that provides overseas long-distance phone
service.

zum thema aufschläge: versuche einfach mal aktien eines indischen unternehmens über deine bank direkt in indien zu orden. du wirst merken, daß dies nicht gehen wird. indische aktien und sehr gute erst recht werden immer mit einem aufschlag gehandelt. das beste beispiel ist INFY, die auch in USA gehandelt werden. Hier zahlt man aufgelder von über 100%. Im Vergleich dazu sind die aufgelder minimal. dies sollte sich spätestens nach dem nyse-listing an INFY angleichen.
