Company Brochure von http://www.databroadcasting.com.hk/
New medium, new possibilities
It is not television. It is not the Internet. It is not CD-ROM. And yet it
combines elements of all those media.
Based on a technologically advanced and highly innovative concept, this new
medium is data broadcasting - an entirely new medium with endless development
possibilities for our future.
Like other new media, data broadcasting has the ability to bring a full spectrum
of interactive content directly into homes, offices and classrooms across the
PRC. It can be updated by the hour, by the minute or even by the second. And it
has the potential to reach millions of users throughout the country and effect
positive changes in their lives.
The difference is the way this new medium delivers content. Unlike the Internet,
which relies on point-to-point transmissions through telephone lines, data
broadcasting makes use of the point-to-multipoint capabilities of the television
networks. This means that data can be transmitted in large packets without any
restrictions. Voice, video, high resolution images and data files hundreds of
megabytes in size-all can be delivered instantly to a personal computer or a
television set through this technology i.e. data broadcasting.
This new medium will be inexpensive and easy to implement. No new infrastructure
need be built, because it makes use of the existing television networks.
Accordingly, the cost of having this technology is virtually negligible.
Now a technological reality, data broadcasting is about to change the way
Chinese people learn, retrieve information, entertain themselves, and conduct
businesses.
New medium, a new enterprise
The company behind this medium with such enormous potential for the future is
China Data Broadcasting Holdings Limited.
China Data Broadcasting was founded in 1997. The company was specializing in
computer software and network systems, information processing systems, and
microelectronic and photoelectron technology. The company assembled a core group
of professionals including scientists, engineers and technicians, were assigned
to develop a technology capable of transmitting data speedily and efficiently.
In the short period since then, China Data Broadcasting has grown to become a
major force in the PRC data broadcasting industry. The company`s experienced and
entrepreneurial management team has successfully developed the hardware and
software that makes data broadcasting possible. In addition, China Data
Broadcasting has been forging strategic alliances with cable television network
operators and content publishers for the delivery of high quality programs to
subscribers across the PRC.
New alliances will continue to be formed over the next few years, as China Data
Broadcasting seeks to develop additional news, information, educational and
entertainment content. With a clearly defined business plan for the expansion
of its services, the Company will derive the bulk of its revenue from sales of
reception modules and software as well as from subscription income shared with
television network operators.
New medium, new content
While data broadcasting is capable of delivering many forms of multimedia
content, China Data Broadcasting will initially focus on those areas where it
has identified the strongest demand.
Working in partnership with 100 cable television network operators across the
PRC, China Data Broadcasting currently offers such content as distance education
materials, financial information, electronic newspapers and magazines, music,
shareware and other Internet contents. New materials will continue to be
produced or acquired in order to satisfy as wide an audience as possible.
One of the most critical areas where data broadcasting has a key role to play is
in education. Chinese parents place a high premium on their children`s
schooling, but only a few of their children have the chance to receive a good
education because of the shortage of qualified teachers, which explains why
distance education is currently in such great demand in the PRC.
Until now, there has been little financial or technological support for the
delivery of a comprehensive distance education program. This is changing,
however, as the Ministry of Education has clearly indicated that it will
implement measures to encourage investment in educational software.
China Data Broadcasting has already signed agreements with certain cable
television network operators to provide high quality distance education
materials for the primary and secondary school levels. Over the next few years,
the Company will also produce or acquire a variety of distance education
materials for subscribers preparing for professional exams.
With data broadcasting, millions of Chinese consumers will soon have the
opportunity not only to enjoy a fast and resourceful information service but
also to contribute to the development of the PRC as educated, productive members
of the society.
New medium, new technology
The Internet has met with only limited success in the PRC, because users are
frustrated with the high cost, long delays and slow transmission speeds typical
of most Internet connections. Nevertheless, there is tremendous demand for
greater access to information among Chinese consumers, and with data
broadcasting they now have a fast, inexpensive and reliable alternative to the
Internet for accessing that information.
Data broadcasting depends on the transmission of digital data over terrestrial,
cable or satellite television networks. To satisfy different subscriber
requirements, China Data Broadcasting has developed two technology platforms:
VBI (Vertical Blanking Interval) transmission for delivering such content as
financial information to a personal computer or a television; and FC (Full
Channel) transmission, a faster technology capable of broadcasting high quality
multimedia content to personal computers or televisions.
The Company has also developed the PC plug-in modules, television set-top boxes
and software that make the reception of data broadcasting possible. All of this
technology is based on open architecture to ensure full compatibility with
existing software and hardware.
As the Company continues to develop its technology, it will set a new industry
standard in data broadcasting. Unlike the Internet, the Company`s technology
will enable millions of viewers to receive, decode and store a wide range of
high quality contents without any limitations.
New medium, new directions
No other country in the world has such wide access to cable television as the
PRC. With 80 million existing cable television subscribers, cable television
network operators now reach over 50% of the country and 70% of all major cities.
These figures are likely to grow much larger in the near future as the
television broadcasting industry modernizes its infrastructure to 21st century
standards.
China Data Broadcasting is in an ideal position to reach these subscribers and
the millions of new subscribers it has targeted for the years ahead. This will
be achieved by:
Setting up new strategic partnerships with television network operators across
the PRC.
Surveying subscribers on a regular basis and providing new contents that meet
their preferences.
Carrying out marketing and promotions programs in various media as well as
expanding its sales network to attract new subscribers.
Continuing its commitment in R&D to develop enhancements to its world-class data
broadcasting technology.
And seeking other commercial opportunities to bring new services on-stream that
offer additional sources of income.
Already available to a growing number of subscribers, the technology and content
provided by China Data Broadcasting will create significant change both in the
lives of Chinese consumers and the development of the PRC.
New medium for a new millennium
A new era has begun. An era that will give the Chinese people access to a world
of information in ways that have never before been possible.
Data broadcasting is the new medium making that information widely available to
subscribers all across the PRC, whether they live in a major metropolitan area
or a remote village in the country`s hinterland.
The technology for delivering high quality multimedia content-news, educational
programs, entertainment, software and more-is already in place. And as awareness
of this technology grows, China Data Broadcasting will be there to bring its
quality services to thousands of millions of consumers in the PRC hungry for the
information.
China Data Broadcasting offers an exciting new medium for the PRC in the new
millennium.
BUSINESS
The Group is principally engaged in the business of data broadcasting in the PRC
and its main activities include the research, development and sale of data
broadcasting hardware and software, the related system integration, technical
support and consultancy service, the planning, sourcing and production of
multimedia contents for data broadcasting, and the sale of software. The Group
currently conducts its business in the PRC only.
Data broadcasting adopts technologies of transmitting digital data over
terrestrial, cable or satellite TV networks via analog TV signals broadcasting.
Data broadcasting system facilitates the transmission of a wide range of
multimedia information through existing TV networks without interfering with TV
pictures. Text, pictures, graphics, audio and even video signals can all be
encoded in analog TV signals and transmitted by means of TV broadcasting.
Reception modules are needed for receiving and decoding data broadcasting
signals and they currently take the form of PC plug-in boards or TV set top
boxes.
As data broadcasting adopts technologies of transmitting digital data through
the existing infrastructure of the TV network operators, substantial investment
and time cost for infrastructure construction can be saved.
The Group`s products and services comprise data broadcasting hardware and
software, namely, transmission modules and reception modules for data
broadcasting, contents for data broadcasting, software and system integration,
technical support and consultancy service. At present, the Group`s transmission
modules have evolved to VBI data broadcasting transmission modules model V and
FC data broadcasting transmission modules model II. The Group`s reception
modules have evolved to PC plug-in boards model V, financial TV set top boxes
model I and multimedia TV set top boxes model I. All the new models of
transmission and reception modules provided by the Group adopt more advanced
data broadcasting technology or different applications and specifications as
compared to their respective older models.
Data broadcasting contents provided by the Group currently include distance
education contents, real-time stock quotation, electronic newspapers and
magazines, music, shareware and other contents from the Internet.
The Group`s FC data broadcasting system and FC distance education system were
accredited as at the PRC`s leading level by Tianjin Municipal Science and
Technology Commission in July 1999. In addition, the Group applied, in July
1999, for a patent for the utility model of its multimedia TV set top boxes for
FC data broadcasting which are capable of processing large chunks of multimedia
information.
The Group contributes free-of-charge or provides transmission modules for VBI
and/or FC data broadcasting, together with the necessary technical support, to
TV network operators to induce them to install the Group`s data broadcasting
transmission system. This strategy introduces the TV networks and the
subscribers of these networks to data broadcasting technology and secures demand
for data broadcasting products and services, which will in turn contribute to
the growth of the Group`s data broadcasting business and the Group`s future
income from the sales of reception modules. In addition, the Group shares income
derived from data broadcasting service subscription with strategically allied TV
network operators.
At present, Internet can be accessed in the PRC mainly through telephone
networks whereas data broadcasting transmits digital data through TV networks.
Due to the quality of the existing telephone networks in the PRC, the maximum
transmission rate of dial-up connection to Internet in the PRC through telephone
networks is approximately 33.6 Kbps whereas the transmission rate of VBI and FC
data broadcasting can be up to approximately 256 Kbps and 5 Mbps respectively.
While Internet users in the PRC are complaining about the high cost, long delays
and slow response in accessing the Internet due to the price structure of
telecommunication services, narrow-band telephone networks and congested
gateway, data broadcasting provides an alternative means to Internet for
browsing information. The Directors consider that data broadcasting is
potentially a strong competitor of the Internet in the PRC.
Data broadcasting adopts point-to-multi-point transmission to enable large
chunks of data to be transmitted swiftly and simultaneously through TV networks
to a large number of subscribers. Data broadcasting overcomes the problem of
connecting to and transmitting data over the Internet in the PRC. Furthermore,
due to the point-to-multi-point transmission characteristic of data
broadcasting, the marginal cost for TV network operators to transmit data to
each additional subscriber is virtually zero. As data broadcasting transmits
data through existing TV networks and no service fees have to be paid by TV
network operators to telecommunication network operators as in the case of
Internet access providers, in the long run, the cost of subscribing to data
broadcasting services is much lower than that of subscribing to Internet
services in the PRC.
The huge number of existing cable TV subscribers also demonstrates the potential
of data broadcasting in the PRC. According to China Computerworld, a press in
the information technology services industry in the PRC, to date, cable TV
networks have a coverage in terms of geographical area of approximately 50% in
the PRC and approximately 70% in the major cities and the total number of cable
TV subscribers, who are potential subscribers to data broadcasting services,
amounted to about 80 million. According to the China Statistical Yearbook 1999,
the number of cable TV network operators in the PRC at county level amounted to
1,403 in 1998. Cable TV has become the most
pervasive communication tool with the highest household coverage in the PRC.

data through existing TV networks and no service fees have to be paid by TV
network operators to telecommunication network operators as in the case of
Internet access providers, in the long run, the cost of subscribing to data
broadcasting services is much lower than that of subscribing to Internet
services in the PRC.
Hallo Leute,

hi,

Man o Man,

Lieber HONKMASTER!
