Hallo leute was halte Ihr vom Börse online Bericht?!

Everyone a winner from Japan Internet fee cuts
By Yuko Inoue
TOKYO, Feb 10 (Reuters) - The move by Japan`s dominant telecoms firm to slash its Internet
access fees is a no-lose situation for the nation`s
fledgling Internet business because it will spark explosive growth in online traffic, analysts say.
Former government monopoly Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT) said on
Wednesday it plans to halve its monthly fixed charges for
unlimited access to Internet to around 4,000 yen ($37) a month. Those who live near NTT`s
Internet access points will only have to pay around
2,000 yen a month.
The firm had been under heavy fire for its high access rates which critics said were stifling
growth of the Internet in Japan.
"I don`t see any clear losers from NTT`s decision," said Shinji Moriyuki, analyst at Daiwa Institute
of Research.
"Because Japan`s Internet market is still so small, the rate cuts by NTT...will boost data traffic,
benefiting almost everyone in the industry."
The announcement comes just as Japan has begun to shed its image as a cyberspace laggard.
Some fear the cut in NTT`s steep access rates could hurt smaller firms that had been trying to
undercut the telecoms giant by using new
technologies, but others are more optimistic. Even small start-ups preparing to offer fast Internet
access service using technology such as
asymmetrical digital subscriber lines (ADSL) won`t be hurt much by NTT`s sudden move, said
Atsuo Takahashi, analyst at ABN Amro.
"A clear division of the market will emerge, with NTT targeting ordinary consumers, while ADSL
providers will draw small company users who will be
prepared to pay more for ADSL`s greater bandwith," he said.
Shigemi Hara, vice president at eAcess Ltd said NTT`s sudden move would not immediately
prompt them to cut their ADSL service fees. "Of course
we are feeling the impact of rate cuts, but we target a different market segment...with faster
access service."
ADSL providers plan to offer services seven to eight times faster than NTT`s ISDN Internet
access service, with monthly charges of 6,000 to 7,000
yen.
eAcess was formed earlier this week, with investment money from Goldman Sachs and Morgan
Stanley Dean Witter .
Companies with extensive data networks, such as Internet Initiative Japan , are well positioned
to benefit from explosive growth in data traffic in
Japan, analysts said.
IIJ said, however, there is no plan to raise its capital spending or change its rate menus for the
time being.
An industry official, who asked not to be identified, said that small unlisted Internet access
providers that cannot cope with an expected huge
demand increase may face hard timea.
"A great shakeout may begin among Japan`s some 3,000 Internet access providers," he said.
Growth in Internet use will certainly be good news for Internet portals, such as Yahoo Japan as
well as e-commerce operators.
The only obstacle to healthier competition in the Internet industry now seems to be NTT`s sheer
size and its virtual monopoly position on the local
call market.
Other telecom carriers, such as Japan Telecom Co and DDI Corp , say NTT needs to cut its
interconnection fees -- the basic charges that
competitors must pay for access to NTT`s local call networks -- so that smaller competitors have
a level playing field.
