US producer prices up tame 0.1% by Rex Nutting
Inflation remained under control in September, giving the Federal Reserve room to maneuver interest rates all it likes. The producer price index rose 0.1% in September, the Labor Department estimated Friday. A 0.9% increase in energy prices was offset by a 0.6 percent drop in food prices. Core prices -- excluding food and energy goods - also rose 0.1% at the wholesale level. Prices of goods at the intermediate stage of processing rose 0.5%, with core intermediate prices up a moderate 0.1%. Capital goods prices were unchanged. Crude goods, such as corn and wheat, rose 0.6%.
8:30AM Retail sales fall 1.2% on autos, in line with forecast by Rachel Koning
U.S. retail sales slumped the most in 10 months in September, largely as the new-car buzz wore off at summer`s end. September sales at U.S. retailers and restaurants fell 1.2 percent, the Commerce Department reported Friday. Sales ex-autos nosed up 0.1 percent. September`s results were in line with Wall Street expectations. Auto sales jumped earlier in the year, encouraged by zero-interest financing and other incentives. But by September, inventories had been depleted, some of the buying programs had expired and the stock market`s rout had turned off some consumers to big-ticket purchases. Sales at motor vehicles and parts dealerships fell 4.8 percent last month, the agency said.
