"...Forgive us, then, if we`re not eager to embrace a bear-market rally, however spirited, as the harbinger of a brisk new day for the economy.

Intel reported earnings, strictly on the skinny side, and, for one day at least, those pitiable profits knocked the wind shear out of the rally. Investors drew the glum but not erroneous conclusion from Intel`s dismal report and downbeat forecast that high-tech was still in horrible shape. Analysts and amateur kibitzers were quick to diagnose the particular ills that Intel was prey to. Oddly, not many of them cited a problem that could cause it more than a small headache next year and beyond.

The problem is called Advanced Micro Devices, or more commonly among high-tech aficionados, AMD . We`ll explain in a moment how AMD , which has roughly 20% of the processor market versus something close to 80% for Intel, spent $651 million on R&D last year versus Intel`s $3.8 billion, had capital investment of $679 million versus Intel`s $7.3 billion and had sales that were only a seventh of Intel`s -- how this distant No 2, in short, can cause Intel big trouble.

The answer simply is in an AMD product called by the working moniker of Sledge Hammer (it`ll be marketed as Opteron), to be introduced in the first half of next year, that gives AMD for the first time a shot at the lucrative server and workstation market, long dominated by Intel. More to the point, the Opteron is getting rave reviews in the trade, while Intel`s competitive product, Itanium, already on the market, is proving a huge disappointment.

If this sounds familiar, it`s probably because you read it in Rhonda Brammer`s feature on AMD in August. The stock, then 7-plus, has been roughed up: It got as low as 3 and change before bouncing back last week to around 4.40. If she liked the shares at 7, she`s got to love them at four, we reasoned, and urged her to revisit AMD . And, gracious as ever, she did.

Two things killed the stock in the month or two that followed her piece, she reports. The first was in mid-September, when the company announced that introduction of its Hammer chip for desktops (not the Sledge Hammer) would be delayed by a quarter, until late March-early April. Then, on Oct. 2, it forecast that sales in the third quarter would be some $500 million, instead of $600 million, and it would show a "substantial operating loss."

This revised melancholy forecast, Rhonda notes wryly, was on the money: On sales of $508 million, AMD lost $254 million. And worse, it burned cash at the rate of $300 million, compared with $200 million in the second quarter. That was enough to raise fears that the company might go belly-up.

But beneath the sorry surface, Rhonda found the third quarter actually wasn`t all bad. For AMD refused to flinch and, instead, bit the bullet: It cleaned up its inventory channels, not only by holding off shipping new products but also by swapping new processors for old ones and eating the difference in cost.

Ex this cleaning out of inventory, she reckons, sales would have topped the expected $600 million and the loss would have been significantly less. But thanks to the purge (and continued brisk demand for flash memory used in cell phones), management is confident that revenues in the fourth quarter will rise a hefty 20% from the third and the red-ink will be noticeably narrower.

Moreover, vigorous cost cutting (not laid out in much detail) will, officials insist, progressively and sharply pare the loss in the next two quarters. Indeed, management says it`ll break even in the second quarter of next year. Meanwhile, Rhonda observes, the company has beefed up its balance sheet by mortgaging a facility in Austin to the tune of $155 million. At the end of the quarter, it had $891 million, or $2.60 a share, in cash, enough, CFO Bob Rivet contends, to enable it to negotiate tech`s tough times. Book value is $9.45 a share, or over twice the share price.

And, in any case, Rivet assures, "We could borrow another $300-500 million in high-yield debt." Little wonder, Rhonda chuckles, he bristles at the talk of AMD going under. In an unguarded moment, Rhonda says, Rivet allows as his stock is "an unbelievable bargain -- a screaming deal. Value players should be gobbling it up." She feels he`s right, provided -- and it`s no small proviso -- things go on schedule.

On that score, Rhonda relates, CEO Hector de J. Ruiz is supremely confident. He declares the schedule for Opteron (nee Sledge Hammer), aimed at the rich server and workstation market now dominated by Intel, has not slipped and will be shipped in the first half of `03. "It`s out there," he says. "It`s tested, it`s real, customers love it. Nothing out there competes."

And, adds Rhonda, it is aimed at the business market, where demand for 64-bit technology is already keen and where customers willingly pay up for a state-of-the-art chip.

AMD , Rhonda sums up, remains an intriguing spec. An investor can lose virtually all his chips if things go wrong. But if things go right, the stock shapes up as a no-sweat triple or quadruple.

On AMD`s Future Plans. Barton to Substitute ClawHammer in Q1 and Opteron to Appear Early
Posted 10/19/02 at 1:23 pm by Anton

Recently AMD reported its quarter results that cannot be considered as satisfactory, but were easy to predict, keeping in mind Intel’s very aggressive introduction of high-end Pentium 4 CPUs and very weak personal computer market. With the financial results report, AMD has also made several very important updates in the plans for the next year.

The most important thing I want to share with you is the fact that the company will concentrate on the server market early next year. AMD will launch the Athlon MP processors based on the Barton core in the first quarter 2003 with 266MHz system bus targeting the entry-level servers. Moreover, AMD will start to ship the x86-64 Opteron processors for high-end/enterprise servers in the first quarter. Since processors for servers and workstations have larger profit margin, there is now more sense for AMD to concentrate on the mentioned market in order to earn more money. During the first quarter AMD will sell up to 150 thousands of Opteron processors and that should definitely improve its financial state.

As far as I now understand, the Athlon XP processor based on Barton core with 512KB of L2 and 333MHz FSB will be able to match the up and coming Pentium 4 “Northwood” processors pretty well and there is almost no sense to make great efforts in order to push the ClawHammer processor in the first quarter as a competitor for the Pentium 4 “Northwood” 3.06GHz and 3.20GHz. Basically, AMD may still offer some x86-64 ClawHammer processors in later Q1 or early Q2, but there will be very few of them and, actually, these shipments will be only for showing the power of the CPU. The real volume shipments of the ClawHammer processors will start in the third quarter, together with Intel’s Pentium 4 “Prescott” CPU. Furthermore, since the new Intel Pentium 4 will be manufactured using the 0.09 micron technology, I do not think there will be a lot of such CPUs from the start, hence, the Santa Clara-based largest microprocessor maker will continue to sell its Nothwood based Pentium 4 and Celeron processors. As a result, expect AMD to continue with the K7 series through the whole 2003.

There is still no information about the fab that will manufacture the Barton cores for AMD’s future microprocessors. A number of weeks ago there were a lot of statements that UMC has numerous problems with 0.13 micron technology, thus, AMD may start to make the chips on the Fab30 itself.

As you see, AMD is very cautious about the year 2003. Since IDC predicts 8.8% growth of the PC market next year, moreover, they had slashed the figure from 11.1% before and they still may cut it down again, AMD’s policy looks to be reasonable.

You should understand that the information is totally unofficial, hence, may contain certain forward-looking statements that may be eventually changed without any notice.

PS. I still remember how Intel introduced its PentiumPro in late 1995. The architecture derived to the desktops and notebooks in a number of years and ruled the world for about 5 years very successfully. Now AMD also introduces the server part first and in several month time they will cover desktop and mobile market segments with the x86-64 processors. Will the x86-64 architecture be as successful and long-live as the PentiumPro? We’ll see.
      ...schnapp

      By DON CLARK
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Endorsing the technology of one of Intel Corp.`s key rivals, Sandia National Laboratories and Cray Inc. plan to build a massive supercomputer using a soon-to-be-introduced line of microprocessor chips from Advanced Micro Devices Inc., people familiar with the matter said.

The development project, estimated in June to cost $90 million, is a high-profile vote of confidence for AMD`s new Opteron chip, in a small but prestigious market long dominated by other chip suppliers. It represents a missed opportunity for Intel, which has been targeting its new Itanium line at high-performance computing applications.

Red Storm, Sandia`s name for the new supercomputer, also marks a step forward for the U.S. effort at leadership in supercomputers, which suffered a blow this year with the completion of a huge machine called the Earth Simulator by Japanese government agencies and NEC Corp. Where recent U.S. machines have largely been constructed out of components used in commercial computers, Cray is expected to develop special technology for connecting the AMD chips that should make Red Storm suited for more-complex scientific problems.

"This is a move away from commodity components," said Horst Simon, division director of the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, a supercomputer facility affiliated with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. "It`s very exciting."

Sandia, which does research for the U.S. Department of Energy in Albuquerque, N.M., and Livermore, Calif., has a performance goal of 100 trillion operations per second for Red Storm. It hasn`t disclosed most technical details, including the chip selection. But Mr. Simon estimated that the machine will require 16,000 or more microprocessors to hit its speed target, which would appear to surpass the Earth Simulator`s current performance.

Fortsetzung zu # 6 aus Yahoo Board:

"Sandia said in June that it had selected Cray, a longtime supercomputer maker based in Seattle, to negotiate a development contract. Cray and Sandia officials didn`t return calls seeking comment Friday, but they have scheduled a news conference for Monday in Albuquerque. AMD and Intel officials declined to comment.

AMD could use some good news. The company`s Athlon chip line, mainly used in personal computers, has been falling behind the performance of comparable Intel chips. The company reported last week a third-quarter loss of $254 million on sales of $508.2 million, off 34% from the year-earlier period.

Opteron is a high-end member of the new line, code-named Hammer, that is due out next year and viewed by analysts as AMD`s best hope for recovery. Like the Itanium, Hammer chips are designed to process 64 bits of information at a time, instead of 32 bits, a capability that helps run huge databases and solve scientific problems.

Intel`s Itanium line, developed over eight years with help from Hewlett-Packard Co., is based on an entirely new architecture and achieves its best performance on new 64-bit programs. AMD, by contrast, made 64-bit additions to the original Intel technology used in the past by both companies.

The difference, AMD says, allows Hammer-based computers to run both 32-bit and 64-bit software at high speed. AMD released preliminary test results last week for Opteron -- so far not validated by outside researchers -- that show the chip exceeding Intel`s latest Itanium 2 model on one of two widely-used speed measures, AMD said.

Itanium 2, introduced last summer, has already been selected for at least a half-dozen high-performance installations. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, another Department of Energy facility, is building a $24.5 million system based on 1,400 Itanium 2 chips. Based on past Sandia announcements, the Red Storm project`s stated performance goal is more than 10 times that of the Pacific Northwest project.
