Schroeder`s support tumbles to record low
By Erik Kirschbaum
BERLIN, Nov 3 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder`s broken election promise not to raise taxes has
triggered the most dramatic drop in support for any new
government since World War Two.
Six weeks after narrowly winning a second term, Schroeder`s
Social Democrats (SPD) have dropped eight percentage points
behind the conservative opposition in voter surveys.
"We`re in a difficult situation," SPD parliamentary leader
Franz Muentefering told German television on Sunday, after new
opinion polls showed a massive erosion of support for Schroeder.
"There are a lot of problems facing our country due to
slowing economic growth," Schroeder`s campaign manager added.
"There`s no way to put a positive spin on it. We have to be
honest about it. We don`t have any illusions."
Schroeder promised not to raise taxes before the September
election but has since raised levies on items ranging from
energy to flowers. He also wants to raise insurance payments for
unemployment, health and pensions costing average wage-earners
some 1,000 euros per year and add new burdens to business.
Included in Schroeder`s programme of tax increases and
spending cuts, which he said became necessary because of
worsening fiscal conditions discovered after the election, is
also a plan to slash a popular subsidy for homeowners. Taxes on
share profits and property earnings will also be introduced.
Schroeder`s defeated conservative challenger Edmund Stoiber
said: "Voters have the right to feel cheated.
Schroeder blames the slowing economy. "There is no
alternative to making adjustments now to the new economic
conditions," he said on Saturday.
BOTCHED START
Two opinion polls published at the weekend show the SPD
falling more than three points to 35 percent, while the
conservative Christian Democrats climbed nearly five points to
43 percent.
"Never before has a government made such a stumbled start,"
said Klaus-Peter Schoeppner, managing director of the Emnid
polling institute. "Most voters feel they`re being hit by more
rules, more taxes for companies and less cash for consumers."
In another survey by the Infratest-Dimap polling group, 84
percent said they didn`t believe government claims that they
were unaware of the economic and fiscal squeeze facing the
country before the election.
"It`s the steepest plunge in support for a new government
since the war," said Dietmar Herz, political science professor
at Erfurt University. "Schroeder`s made a lot of mistakes.
"Voters are deeply disappointed. Some knew the `no tax`
pledge couldn`t be kept, but they`re still angry. Schroeder`s
trying to cram in all the pain at the start."
Finance Minister Hans Eichel was portrayed as a vampire,
with fangs and blood dripping from his lips, in a photo montage
in Bild daily because of his drive for more tax revenues.
Newspapers and magazines have been filled with letters from
voters expressing their wrath at Schroeder.
"I voted for Schroeder but I`m really angry at him now for
breaking promises," said Inge Meysel, a leading German actress.
Even Schroeder`s close friend, rock musician Marius
Mueller-Westernhagen, said he was dismayed.
"Like many others I feel disappointed," he told Bild am
Sonntag newspaper. "You can`t make economic policies that
contradict business interests."
