TRINITY BIOTECH ANNOUNCES RECORD
YEAR END RESULTS

74% Increase in Profit before exceptional items and
60% Rise in EPS before exceptional items for year
Dublin, Ireland (February 8, 2000) . . . .Trinity Biotech plc (NASDAQ: TRIBY) today announced record results for the three months and year ended December 31, 1999.


For the year ended December 31, 1999, the Company reported a profit before exceptional items of $4,511,000 or US$0.16 per share compared to a profit before exceptional items of $2,588,000 or US$0.10 per share for the year ended December 31, 1998. This represents a 74% growth in profit before exceptional items and a 60% growth in earnings per share before exceptional items.


During the last quarter, the Company reported two exceptional items netting to an exceptional profit of $404,000.These relate to the profit on the sale of the Dublin factory ($1,014,000) and the write down of an investment ($610,000) and represent $0.014 per share.The net profit after exceptional items rises to $4,916,000 with earnings per share at $0.175 per share.Fiscal 1999 revenues increased by 13% to $26,105,000 from $23,170,000.However, when one excludes the low margin Warner Lambert pregnancy business, which Trinity disposed of in the prior year, the revenue has grown by 49%.For the three months ended December 31, 1999, revenues rose 6% to $6,650,000 from $6,301,000 for the same period last year.Profit before exceptional items for the quarter increased 48% to $1,298,000, which compares to $876,000 for the same period last year.


Commenting on the results, Jonathan O’Connell, Chief Financial Officer said, “Fiscal 1999 was an excellent year for Trinity Biotech.The company increased its profit before exceptional items by 74% and its earnings per share by over 60%.When one excludes the amortization of goodwill, profits increased by over 94%. During the year, Trinity successfully consolidated the acquisitions it made during 1998 and has resulted in substantial improvement in our operating results. The Company’s gross margin has improved significantly from 35% to 44% for the year and from 37% to 49% for the quarter.


The Company’s sale and leaseback transaction and new financing has significantly strengthened the Company’s balance sheet.The sale and leaseback and the new financing reduced our net debt significantly from $25mm at the beginning of 1999 down to $13.6mm at the end of 1999.The Company’s debt-to-equity ratio stands at an undemanding 59% compared to 157% one year ago.

The Company now has cash of over $3mm and total assets of over $44mm.
