      Intel, Post-Pentium
George Gilder, Gilder Technology Report, 10.30.02, 3:00 PM ET

In recent issues of the GTR, we continued to warn against overrating Intel`s technically amazing feat of pushing Pentium processor speeds to 3 gigahertz (GHz) and beyond. Power consumption increases proportionally with clock frequency and by the square of the voltage. Now, power is going through the roof as Intel achieves runaway clock rate gains. But companywide efforts have largely failed to bring gate potentials much below their leaky limits, around one volt. Moreover, the extra clock cycles are mostly wasted in "wait states," as megahertz memories lag well behind the gigahertz processors.

What computer users need today is not a heroic churn of logic power and heat but more communications speed across the chip, across the board, and across the last mile. We cited National Semiconductor`s focus on low-power processors--it`s Geode GX2 operates at one-tenth of the new Pentium frequency (333 MHz). It also consumes less power (about 2 watts versus 55-plus watts in a full-fledged Pentium), and can thus eliminate the costly heat-sink and fan--as a key advantage in the diverse and growing market for PDAs, set-top boxes, tablet computers, and other getaway gizmos.

In the last week, however, Intel has made a series of announcements that show not only an unexpected forte in silicon germanium and analog but also a resolve to use these technologies in single-chip cellphone radios. Its new Banias platform for the first time also integrates dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11a/b) wireless connectivity onto the motherboard. For even thinner devices, Intel`s XScale architecture will also include 802.11b.

Atmel Announces the Support of the Wi-Fi Protected Access ``WPA`` Security Solution for its 802.11b Wireless LAN Devices
Thursday October 31, 8:30 am ET

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2002--Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML - News) announced today it will support the standards-based security solution called Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) on its successful suite of 802.11b Media Access Controller (MAC) and MAC plus baseband controller parts. Wi-Fi is the term used by an industry consortium to describe interoperable wireless local area networks. WPA, a standard being promoted by Wi-Fi Alliance, will enhance the Wireless Encryption Privacy (WEP) encryption methodology supported under the IEEE 802.11 standard. A WPA security solution will be enabled simply through a firmware upgrade to existing products in the market and as an integrated hardware block in Atmel`s future MAC plus baseband products.

"All Atmel`s Wireless LAN current products are Wi-Fi certified, either directly by Atmel or through customers using an Atmel reference design. Our decision to support the WPA security solution will ensure customers of Atmel based solutions that they will continue to receive the Wi-Fi certification after the establishment of the WPA test plan from the Wi-Fi Alliance. Additionally, the data currently available show that Atmel`s WPA implementation will be achieved with very low performance degradation when in firmware and with no performance degradation at all when in hardware, maintaining a popular advantage of Atmel`s existing WEP security mechanism implementation," said Dimitris Troupis, WLAN Specialist of Atmel`s Multimedia Communications Product Group. Dimitris Troupis further adds, "The fast growing deployment of 802.11b networks, will be uplifted from the Wi-Fi Alliance`s WPA security solution. Atmel is proud to contribute to this effort by offering WPA enabled 802.11b devices for the immediate Market needs". Atmel is also closely following the significant ongoing work of the IEEE 802.11i Task Group and plans to incorporate AES encryption for full support of the 802.11i standard when it emerges.

      About the Wi-Fi Alliance

The Wi-Fi Alliance is a nonprofit organization formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of IEEE 802.11 products and to promote them as the global, wireless LAN standard across all market segments. The Wi-Fi Alliance has instituted a test suite that defines how member products are tested to certify that they are interoperable with other Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products. These tests are conducted at an independent laboratory. Membership in the Wi-Fi Alliance is open to all companies that support the 802.11 family of standards. Wi-Fi Alliance now comprises over 170 members that offer over 450 Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products from the world`s leading companies.

Atmel Releases a Complete Family of Serial, USB and PCMCIA Smart Card Reader ICs
Thursday November 7, 3:05 am ET

NANTES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 7, 2002--Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML - News) announced today the expansion of its C51 microcontroller family dedicated to advanced smart card readers. Designed in partnership with key-players in the smart card reader market, Atmel`s new reader ICs address any application using a serial, USB or PCMCIA smart card reader.
The new AT8xC5122 and AT83C5123 join Atmel`s line up of AT8xC5121 C51-based one-chip solutions currently used in serial smart card readers for mobile phones, PDAs and energy meters and are available in Flash, RAM or ROM versions. These new devices offer greater flexibility to optimize USB smart card keyboards and PClink smart card readers, respective to target applications.

Additionally, the AT83C25 provide solutions for PCMCIA readers and the AT83C24, a cost-effective level shifter solution for set top boxes and EFT/POS.

To help customers reduce time-to-market, Atmel and its partners have also developed ready-to-use solutions. Including specific software, they are pre-certified by major industry standards (EMV 2000, PC/SC, ISO7816, WHQL).

All devices retain a fully integrated DC/DC converter with 75 to 98% efficiency, which powers the target card with the appropriate 5, 3 or 1.8 Voltage regardless of the voltage source. An ISO7816 UART is also integrated for easy data transfer to the card (except for AT83C24). A unique on-chip power management unit handles wake-up, reset/power-fail and short-circuit detection. For ESD protection, card I/O`s have been especially designed to be resistant to 4 kV.

"The introduction of these new devices puts Atmel among the major suppliers of smart card reader ICs," said Manish Vadher, marketing director for C51 Microcontrollers.

LOL :)
