A Look Backhttp://redherring.com/insider/2002/12/10trends-lookback12160…
December 16, 2002 As the last few years have illustrated, trying to correctly identify future trends in technology is like peering into a crystal ball. Blindfolded. In the middle of an earthquake. The best you can hope for is not to get hurt by the flying shards of glass.
In our sixth annual top ten trends list, Red Herring continues its tradition of identifying future trends that are grounded in present reality--not to mention persuasive facts and strong analysis. Our trends are not, like those in other publications, far-out future fancies where anything is possible (say, Rosy the Robot rules the kitchen in 2025). These trends will emerge in 2003 and are as close as one can get to 20/20 hindsight while still looking ahead. They represent billion-dollar market opportunities. They are also off the radar of the mainstream media, which will be covering them by next December. We are interested not only in the broad direction of technology, but also in how that direction will affect specific companies. In other words, we unearth the winners and losers.
Given the sullen mood in the technology industry, our trends also attempt to balance positive with negative: for every downer (the telecom companies that have just emerged from bankruptcy will go bankrupt again), we have an upper (bet on cable companies, which are in the best position to deliver a triple play--entertainment, Internet access, and telephone service--to the home).
A few of this year`s trends have something else in common: September 11. Biotechnology will get an added boost from the federal dollars pouring in (but not in the way you might think), and as the push for security accelerates, look for the rise of a new breed of computer chip with built-in security features. Also, in the coming year, look for us to miss the mark on a few of our predictions--after all, this is the shakin`, quakin` tech sector.
