Nokia Introduces Dallas to a New Wallet; Nokia and MasterCard Team Up to Test A Future of Retail Payments Using Mobile Phones

      DALLAS, May 13, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --

Today, Nokia (NOK) announced it is working with MasterCard International to utilize payment and messaging technologies in a new and innovative way to take mobile commerce to a new level.

Now in the second phase of its mobile commerce trial, Nokia is demonstrating how mobile phones can be utilized as more than a voice communications tool.

Consumers simply tap or wave their Nokia mobile phone enabled with MasterCard PayPass(TM) over a special reader at the point of sale to make a payment.

In addition, a mobile commerce messaging platform has been developed to enable retailers to instantly and more effectively communicate to their customers

MasterCard PayPass Continues to Build Momentum as `The Simpler Way to Pay`
      5/13/2003 9:20:00 AM

PURCHASE, N.Y., May 13, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- MasterCard Also Demonstrates First Dual Interface Smart Card for Contact and Contactless Payments at CTST Show

MasterCard International today announced that its innovative "contactless" payment initiative, MasterCard PayPass(TM), continues to build momentum.

Now in its fourth month, the Orlando, Florida MasterCard PayPass market trial has 16,000 cardholders and nearly 60 merchant locations participating.

Additionally, MasterCard recently began working with Nokia to incorporate MasterCard PayPass into mobile phones.

A Nokia market trial currently taking place with retailers in the Dallas, Texas area allows consumers to tap or wave their phone to make payments simpler.

"MasterCard is pleased with how PayPass has grown since we launched our market test four months ago. We`re already evolving PayPass to meet growing consumer needs that have resulted from the Orlando pilot," said Art Kranzley, EVP and chief e-Business officer, MasterCard International.

"Over the next few months, MasterCard will continue to lead the industry in introducing additional PayPass-related innovations, delivering to consumers more convenient payment solutions to make their everyday purchases."

"This Nokia trial makes use of the same technology standards that have been deployed by MasterCard in Orlando for its PayPass market trial that enhances the traditional payment card form factor.

Now, the simplicity of MasterCard PayPass has been integrated into a consumer`s ever-present cell phone."

"Nokia is committed to bringing easy-to-use next-generation technologies to consumers and is taking a leadership role in enabling mobile commerce applications," said Tom Zalewski, Head of Mobile Commerce for Nokia Americas.

"Imagine the convenience of using your phone as your wallet to pay for the things we do everyday -- from dining out to picking up prescriptions, developed photos and video rentals -- and the convenience of being alerted via messaging that those items are ready.

In the first phase of our trial, we learned that users really liked the convenience of being able to pay for their lunch with their mobile phone and that messaging could be incorporated to create a win-win situation.

We are now taking that formula out to larger audience and broader range of retailers, and are very excited to be working with MasterCard on the second phase of the trial."

      How It All Works

The Nokia phone SmartCover(TM) is embedded with a contactless chip and a Radio Frequency circuit.

The chip has been specially programmed with pre-registered MasterCard payment account information as part of the new MasterCard PayPass proximity payment technology.

When consumers tap or wave their Nokia phones on the specially equipped PayPass readers at the point of sale, payment account information is transmitted to the terminal.

The transaction is then processed through MasterCard`s highly trusted payment network in the normal way.

A system provided by JPMorgan Chase processes the payment account information.

Just a few seconds after consumers tap or wave their phone, payment confirmation is received and they are on their way.

Vorschlag . Nokia and MasterCard are expanding the tests of their PayPass system to the Dallas area. Nokia will distribute phones with snap-on phone covers that have an
embedded Radio Frequency ID (RFID) chip that is programmed with preregistered MasterCard payment account information. Several merchants in Irving are
participating in the trial, including a bar, restaurant, filling station and camera shop. As part of the trial, the merchants can send ads to the SmartCover phones via
SMS (Short Message Service), according to Nokia. Later in the trial, Nokia plans to upgrade the messaging function to include MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service),
      which delivers video and audio.

Gemplus Awarded Contract to Deliver Smart Cards for Nationwide ID Program in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
      5/21/2003

      - Sagem Awards Gemplus a Contract in the Middle East to Deliver Over Two Million Cards to the UAE population

      - Ministry of Interior of the UAE Deploying Smart Card-Based ID Program to its Citizens to Improve Quality of Public Service

      - Sagem and Gemplus Collaboration Results in Second Successive ID Contract Win, Reinforcing Strength of Their Joint ID Offering

LUXEMBOURG, PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gemplus International SA (Euronext Paris SA: GEPL.PA; Sicovam: 005768) (Nasdaq: GEMP), the world`s leading provider of smart card solutions, today announced it will deliver smart card technology and related services to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for its nationwide ID program. The contract involves the issuance of over two million smart ID cards to the entire UAE population beginning in the summer of 2004.

Gemplus acts as a sub-contractor delivering smart cards, software, and services from its "ResIDent" secure ID solution, while Sagem, the world leader in biometrics-based ID systems, is the prime contractor providing advanced biometrics technology with the AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) and system integration. The UAE nationwide ID program marks the second successive contract win in the Middle East for the Sagem-Gemplus partnership, which was formed earlier this year to strengthen the companies` offerings to the national ID market. The first contract was in the Sultanate of Oman, scheduled to roll-out at the end of 2003.

"Gemplus is pleased to be selected as the smart card technology provider for what is sure to become a landmark technology infrastructure in the Middle East," said Gilles Michel, President Gemplus Financial & Security Services. "This significant contract win proves the strength of our secure ID offering `ResIDent,` which has now been selected for two major national ID deployments in only 6 months."

The core objectives of the UAE ID program are to enhance national identification procedures throughout the country by providing better, faster, and more accurate public services for its citizens, and to address identification issues through a higher level of authentication by using smart card-based biometrics. The UAE Ministry of Interior has invested in a modern system that utilizes open Java Card(TM) technology, in order to deliver a flexible ID solution capable of easily accommodating future e-government applications.

Once the program rolls out, citizens and residents of the UAE will be able to securely and conveniently store their personal identity credentials on the cards. Over time it is possible to extend the functionality of the card by adding applications such as driver`s license, border control, and emergency medical data. The ID cards combined with biometric recognition can be checked through both portable terminals and automatic electronic validation.

MasterCard, Nokia Extend PayPass To Phones
      Prepaid Telecom

MasterCard’s extension of its PayPass contactless card trial in Orlando, FL,to the end of September coincides with the card firm’s move to test Nokia phones containing a PayPass chip, in Irving, Texas.

Since January, Orlando-area retailers have been testing PayPass at 60 locations, and while transaction volumes are unknown, TowerGroup analyst, Ed Kountz, is “cautiously optimistic” on PayPass, believing “there is a value proposition for consumers”.

Once MasterCard has evaluated the results of this trial, the service will be expanded in Orlando, or introduced to another market, according to a VP, Murdo Munro.

      Hi-tech cards `allay fraud fears`

A four-digit number would replace your signature
Most people seem comfortable with using hi-tech credit cards instead of current ones that rely on signatures.
Three-quarters of UK consumers said using cards witha special chip in them would make paying by plastic safer, a survey by Mastercard has found.

The so-called Chip and Pin cards are being tested in Northampton and could be in widespread use by next summer.

The system is designed to fight credit card fraud and relies on a four-digit code number instead of a signature.

      Plastic confidence

Around a thousand people were interviewed for the survey for credit card company Mastercard.

We are aiming to have more than 60% of card transactions using Chip and Pin by the middle to the end of next year

      Paul Lucraft, Mastercard
A majority - 75% - welcomed the idea of tapping in a Pin instead of signing a slip of paper, believing it would make paying by credit card safer.

About half thought it would be quite easy for fraudsters to copy their signature, while just under 10% admitted they knew someone who had signed for goods using someone else`s card.

"It`s clear that the nation lacks complete confidence in the security of signature only checks," said Paul Lucraft of Mastercard.

"We are very aware of their concern, and by replacing signatures with Pin numbers at the point of sale we will go a long way towards making plastic safer for everybody."

      Costly business

The trials in Northampton are due to come to an end next month, when the banks and retailers involved in the Chip and Pin scheme will decide whether to introduce the new hi-tech card across the UK.

Mastercard, one of the credit card companies backing the Chip and Pin technology, says the pilot has gone well. It expects the new technology to appear on the High Street within the next 12 months.

"We are aiming to have more than 60% of card transactions using Chip and Pin by the middle to the end of next year," said Mr Lucraft, who is Mastercard`s general manager of business services for Northern Europe.

The new cards have a thumbnail-size microchip that stores personal data more securely than the magnetic stripe, making it harder to counterfeit.

The UK banking industry is hoping the system, which has been commonplace in several European countries for a number of years, will reduce credit card fraud which cost them an estimated £420m last year.

It is expected 850,000 retailer terminals, 120 million cards and 40,000 cash machines will be upgraded by 2005.

MasterCard PayPass Trials and Survey Demonstrate Momentum of Contactless Payments; Results Reveal Strong Interest in a Simpler Way to Pay
      11/17/2003 12:01:00 PM

PURCHASE, N.Y., Nov 17, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- MasterCard International today announced initial results of its MasterCard PayPass contactless payment market trials taking place in Orlando, Florida and Dallas, Texas. MasterCard also announced results from a recent consumer payment survey, which showed that nearly half (49 percent) of consumers carry $20 or less in their wallet and that 86 percent of consumers reported they want to use cash less often than they currently do.

"Technology has lead consumers to expect more convenience in their everyday life and MasterCard`s challenge is to enable the most convenient payments," said Art Kranzley, chief e-Business officer, MasterCard International. "Our key learnings from these trials will allow us to better focus our deployment efforts, leading to broader availability of MasterCard PayPass in the U.S. market and around the world.

"A major intent of the Orlando PayPass trial was to test the real-world consumer and retailer experiences of using contactless payment technology. The trial provided invaluable insight on the tangible impact contactless payments can have on how consumers pay for daily purchases and the concrete benefits retailers can enjoy from streamlined transactions," added Kranzley.

      Trial Learnings

More than 16,000 cardholders and more than 60 retail locations participated in the nine month Orlando trial of MasterCard PayPass. Trial results indicate that consumers find MasterCard PayPass to be simple, quick and convenient. PayPass cardholders value the added security that they receive from retaining possession of their card while paying. Consumers also like the convenience of not carrying cash for everyday purchases and not having to go to the ATM as frequently.

Results of the Orlando trial verify that PayPass can offer significant time savings. In some locations, MasterCard PayPass reduced purchase times so substantially as to have a tangible impact on retailers` ability to support additional transactions and thus potentially increase revenues. The most significant time savings have been recognized in the drive-thru environment which shaved between 12-18 seconds off the purchase time as compared to cash.

Earlier this year, MasterCard began working with Nokia to incorporate MasterCard PayPass into mobile phones. A Nokia market trial currently taking place with retailers in the Dallas, Texas area allows consumers to tap or wave their phone to make payments simpler.

Initial results from the PayPass trial in Dallas reinforce speed and convenience as top benefits. The average PayPass payment made using a mobile phone was six seconds faster than using a card, due to the reduction of "fumble time" and PayPass payments matched "nearest bill payment" as the quickest way to pay in store at Dallas PayPass retailers.

To realize the full potential of PayPass, the following best practices are recommended for the point of sale:

      -- High speed authorization connections

-- Integrated terminals and readers with direct connections to
      cash registers

-- Implementation in quick pay merchant environments

PayPass offers financial institutions an opportunity to grow their business by opening up new acceptance locations and allowing their cardholders to use payment cards where they previously relied only on cash. Issuers have seen a positive response by their cardholders through the incorporation of MasterCard PayPass into their payment cards. In multiple situations, MasterCard PayPass prompted occasional card users to use their cards much more frequently. Some issuers also saw positive gains in monthly transaction volume, total spending and frequency of use.

      Payment Trend Survey Results

Last month, MasterCard commissioned a national telephone survey to gain additional insight into consumer payment trends and preferences. According to the survey, nearly 40 percent of U.S. adults carry less cash with them compared with 5 years ago. 26 percent say they carry "a lot less" cash. Findings also showed that nearly half (49 percent) of consumers carry $20 or less in their wallet and 86 percent of consumers reported that they want to use cash less often than they currently do. These survey results are in line with 2002 studies which showed that 53 percent of consumers would use PayPass to replace cash payments if their banks offered it to them.

      Future of MasterCard PayPass

MasterCard will continue to lead the industry in introducing additional contactless payment related innovations, delivering to financial institutions, retailers and consumers "The Simpler Way to Pay." PayPass usage continues to expand in Orlando and MasterCard is also proceeding with plans for MasterCard PayPass deployments in additional locations that meet the requirements of its issuers, retailers and the growing base of contactless payment suppliers and partners.

MasterCard Records Sharp Increase in Smart Card Programs Worldwide; Financial Institutions Working With MasterCard to Manage More than 400 Chip Implementations - Double Last Year`s
      11/18/2003 3:21:00 PM

PURCHASE, N.Y., Nov 18, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Registering a sharp rise in global demand for smart card services, MasterCard International today announced that it is now working with its customers on more than 400 individual chip implementations around the world. This figure represents more than double the number of projects active in the fourth quarter of 2002.

Smart card adoption continues to gather force in most regions of the world. Smart card activity has been particularly strong in the Asia/Pacific region, where the number of EMV smart cards has continued to double each year - to 14.5 million cards today. The same basic trend holds true in Latin America/Caribbean, South Asia and Middle East Africa and especially Europe, which continues to lead the world with more than 200 chip migration programs now underway.

This widespread technology shift has helped to guide recent decisions by MasterCard`s regional boards in Asia/Pacific, Europe, Latin America/Caribbean, and South Asia and Middle East Africa, who have all recently enacted intra-regional liability shift policies calling for the full-scale adoption of smart cards and chip terminals in the 2005 and 2006 time period. Migration incentives are already in place in most of these regions as well.

"MasterCard and its customers are launching some of the most exciting and innovative smart card programs in the payments industry," said Dr. Toni Merschen, senior vice president and head of MasterCard`s Chip Center of Excellence. "By staying close to our customers, and providing the right technology solutions at the right time in the right markets, MasterCard is making the move to chip as smooth as possible."

One of MasterCard`s key European customers, Credit Mutuel Centre-Est Europe, will be the first bank in the world to issue M/Chip 4 on MULTOS in a massive, country-wide roll out beginning in early 2004. M/Chip 4 on MULTOS is the first EMV payment application to receive EAL4+ certification, the highest Common Criteria certification accepted worldwide.

"Credit Mutuel Centre-Est Europe is pleased to be upgrading at least half of its entire card portfolio with chips carrying M/Chip 4," said Claude Brun, executive director at Credit Mutuel. "We have selected MasterCard`s M/Chip 4 application based on our need to get to market quickly, our need for flexibility and our desire to offer our cardholders the highest security available."

To help ensure a steady stream of MasterCard chip products in the marketplace, MasterCard is working to equip the vendor community with the tools they need to support MasterCard smart card programs around the world. Card vendors including Austria Card, Gemplus, Giesecke & Devrient and Setec have committed to supporting M/Chip 4. MasterCard has also recently signed an agreement with Ingenico, making Ingenico a key supporter of MasterCard`s M/Chip deployment program.

      Global Support Programs

Last year, MasterCard announced OneSMART(TM) MasterCard(R), a comprehensive, global support program covering every aspect necessary to successfully launch smart cards. With OneSMART MasterCard, all of MasterCard`s global smart card solutions, technical expertise, and marketing support were consolidated under a single banner.

Expanding on this, MasterCard is today unveiling a subset of OneSMART(TM) MasterCard(R), called the "M/Chip Deployment Program," which provides a complete solution for MasterCard`s customers who are migrating their payment cards from the magnetic stripe platform to chip. The M/Chip Deployment Program focuses specifically on addressing all aspects of chip migration and consists of three components:

-- The M/Chip application and its enabling infrastructure

-- M/Chip Implementation Support Services provided by MasterCard

-- Industry products and services based on the M/Chip
      specification

      OneSMART Choice for Migration

To further enhance their smart card business case, MasterCard`s customers can leverage MasterCard M/Chip 4 as the technical basis to deliver a range of additional applications, including:

-- M/Chip Pre-Authorized - Allows the cardholder to place an
amount of cash in a "pre-authorized" account, which is
regulated by the chip`s "open-to-buy" counter. The cardholder
continues to use the card in an off-line mode until the amount
requested exceeds the card`s "open-to-buy" counter, at which
point funds must be replenished. This new application extends
the Maestro value proposition by enabling debit cards to be
issued to new customer segments and accepted by new merchant
      categories.

-- Chip Authentication Program -M/Chip 4 cards can be used in
conjunction with MasterCard(R) SecureCode(TM) to generate the
authentication data necessary to guarantee e-commerce
transactions. This program, called the Chip Authentication
Program, is a smart card-based authentication solution that
MasterCard is making available to its issuers as part of its
global MasterCard SecureCode solution. It can also be used for
Internet banking and other applications requiring positive
      cardholder authorization. Three significant Chip
Authentication Program implementations were announced this
week by Barclaycard in the United Kingdom, Bundesverband der
Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken in Germany and
      Redecard in Brazil.

      -- MasterCard PayPass(TM) - M/Chip 4 also supports emerging
solutions such as PayPass, MasterCard`s contactless payment
program. As M/Chip is a highly flexible solution that can be
customized to meet the issuers needs, it can be offered with
the PayPass contactless capability either on a single,
integrated chip, or as a "hybrid," two-chip (contact and
contactless) card. Either way, PayPass enables cardholders to
pay with one simple touch of the card.

"By building on M/Chip 4, we are greatly boosting the value proposition for chip migration," said Merschen. "When our customers adopt M/Chip, they receive immediate access to a range of applications and related support services that can strengthen their business case for moving to chip."

The OneSMART MasterCard program was recently expanded with a range of pre-configured smart card packages that will help our customers get to market faster. These three distinct packages all include MasterCard M/Chip and range in functionality from a basic, single application payment card to a more robust, Web-savvy card optimized for Internet usage:

-- OneSMART MasterCard Payment - provides an enhanced payment
      application

-- OneSMART MasterCard Authentication - ensures a higher level of
security for online shopping and remote banking

-- OneSMART MasterCard Web - allows cardholders to securely store
and manage a wide range of personal data (such as names,
addresses, URLs, log-on passwords) on the smart card chip

      Outlook: Tech trends
      By CAROLINE LOUIS

WELCOME 2004! As the planet bid adieu to 2003, soothsayers and crystal-ball gazers are busy making predictions for the Year of the Monkey. Some have predicted good times, with a year of buoyant economy.
Since talking of things to come is always the “in” thing every year, we’ve decided to join the foray and purchased a crystal ball to “predict” what upcoming trends are to be expected in the tech industry.
Mobile wonders: Make no mistake about it. The tech-savvy public hungers for innovations – and what better device to bring all that nifty ideas to, you’ve guessed it, the mobile phones. Just walk up to any man on the street and you’ll stand a pretty good chance of finding a mobile phone on him, (equipped with even a digital camera and Internet capabilities too!).
To meet this insatiable hunger for savvy tools, our crystal ball says that future mobile phones will incorporate smartcard technology and function as identification cards and electronic wallets. This allows users to make electronic payments for shopping purchases or train tickets. There will be services where users can download a concert or movie ticket from an Internet site and bring the phone to the theatre for fast prepaid entry.
If that doesn’t scream “innovative”, how about getting a phone that records and plays video clips, as well as stores large road maps for global positioning functions and more Web pages for use on high-speed mobile Internet? Sweet. If you ever own such a device, a word of advice from our crystal ball: never, ever leave home without it!
Click and snap!: A picture says a thousand words. So how about capturing those magical moments by coughing up about RM1,000 or less for a digital camera? It’s not surprising to find low-end and mid-range digital cameras that will meet your budget. And if you top up several hundred ringgit more, you might even get camera-direct printers and print your photos directly from your cameras. Some cameras can even record audio, or entire movies.
So what did our crystal ball have to say?
Expect cameras of the future to do more than just take pictures. The convergence of different sophisticated technologies will produce hybrid multi-capability cameras with tons of goodies on them, hence transforming them into communicator tools. Already there are mobile phones with built-in cameras, how about vice versa?
Or cameras that locate with the help of global positioning system (GPS)? Or receive signals from Bluetooth devices or radio frequency identification (RFID) tags?
Power chips:Using hi-tech devices will require the use of powerful chips and long-lasting batteries. Future mobile gadgets are expected to include a mishmash of complex technologies, including third-generation (3G) telecommunication.
It goes without saying that mobile phones are currently the hottest gadgets around. According to recent reports, the Intel PXA800EF cellular processor wireless-Internet-on-a-chip or single-chip Edge solution for enhanced applications capabilities in mainstream phones will be in production this year.
Our crystal ball says this is good news as these chips will give high-memory capacity for mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
Skin-deep: Much has been said about chips in gadgets. So on a quirky note, care to have chip implants? Implantable chips have been used over the years to track animals and pets. Our crystal ball, in its “glowing” report, says chips implanted under the skin will be common, like body piercing.
Chips implants will let us interact wirelessly with mobile phones, PCs, TVs, and remote controls, so that we can read e-mails, receive phone calls and much more.
For instance, the embedded chip, through a earpiece, can recommend TV shows to watch, news about the stock market, GPS tracking, monitor your health and identify diseases.
Our crystal ball, however, is against the idea of having it embedded on your shoulder so as to avoid being labelled as “someone with a chip on the shoulder”.
Biometrics: In troubled times that we live in, the safeguard of data and human lives are continously stressed upon. As such, the importance of security is not to be taken lightly.
Even PDAs now come with biometrics capability incorporating thumbprint security for owner identification. Other popular biometric methods include iris and palm identification. Our crystal ball predicts that biometrics will slowly inch its way into more household products. Biometric tools will not only cater to high-risk areas such as airports and corporations, but will also be made available to home and car owners.
Imagine unlocking doors to your car by just pressing your thumb against the handle and the car instantly recognises its owner. Or instructing your bathroom to prepare a hot bath via a voice command. Out goes the numerous passwords and logons.
We know that these technologies sound a tad too futuristic and may take years to fully blossom, but with hard work and the right technologies, such possibilities might one day become realities.
And our crystal ball’s final prediction? It’s heading for the office store room!
