Shares of Ivanhoe, an international oil and gas exploration and production company, are up 73 percent at 95 cents. Almost 39 million shares changed hands, making it fifth on Nasdaq`s "most actives" list.

The Vancouver, British Columbia-based firm (IVAN: news, chart, profile) will use the financing for an expansion program at its South Midway-Sunset field in Kern County, Calif. The plan includes drilling 30 oil wells, and upgrading surface transmission and steam-injection facilities.

In related news Wednesday, Ivanhoe said negotiations for a gas-to-liquids project in Qatar have been terminated, but the company`s still actively pursuing gas-to-liquids project opportunities throughout the world.

Ivanhoe to test oil-processing tech

Ivanhoe Energy saw its shares rise another 15 percent Thursday after saying it signed a contract with privately held Ensyn Petroleum International to test its rapid thermal processing technology.

In recent dealings, the stock was up 14 cents at $1.07.

The climb comes on top of Wednesday`s 69 percent climb, precipitated by Ivanhoe`s announcement of a $5 million credit line and expansion plans. See related story.

According to Ivanhoe, the oil-processing technology is designed to "upgrade the quality of heavy oil by producing high yields of lighter, more valuable crude oil."

The deal gives the Vancouver, B.C.-based firm (IVAN: news, chart, profile) the right to test its heavy oil with the technology in a 250 barrel-per-day demonstration plant in California`s San Joaquin Valley. Ivanhoe would also receive exclusive rights to the technology in two prospective foreign countries.

TORONTO, June 12 (Reuters) - Ivanhoe Energy Inc. (Toronto:IE.TO - News) shares rose sharply in high volume for the third-straight day on Thursday, as news of an expected production increase at its California project sparked interest in a stock that some say has been undervalued.

Vancouver-based Ivanhoe was up 19 Canadian cents, or 15 percent, at C$1.45 on the Toronto Stock Exchange (News - Websites) at mid-afternoon.

The shares have more than doubled from their close of 63 Canadian cents on Monday. Most of the gains came on Wednesday after the company said production levels could double at its South Midway-Sunset field in California after it receives financing to drill 30 new oil wells.

More than 10 million shares traded on Wednesday, and the volume at mid-afternoon on Thursday was nearly 3 million for a company that rarely sees more than 100,000 shares exchanged in a session.

One analyst who asked not to be named said the stock had been unfairly punished when it fell 36 percent on May 28 after Ivanhoe said it had terminated discussions with Qatar Petroleum to develop a block in Qatar`s North Field to produce natural gas products.

He said the news of the production increase was prompting renewed interest in the stock and pushing it up to fair levels.

On Thursday, Ivanhoe acknowledged its stock had been very active in the past couple of weeks, but said it was not aware of any other information that would cause such high trading levels.
