Capturing The Friedmans` Creators Still Aren`t Sure What to Expect
By Richard Gorelick
The people who made Capturing the Friedmans speak, in shorthand, of a Movie A and a Movie B. Movie B is the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize-winning movie about an upper-middle-class Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y., family afflicted by a sex scandal, now opening in theaters across the country. Movie A, the documentary originally intended by first-time filmmaker Andrew Jarecki, was to be a study of children`s entertainers in New York, including the city`s most successful birthday-party clown, David Friedman. Among the people brought in to look at the developing footage of Movie A was the film editor Nancy Baker (Harlan County U.S.A., Streetwise), whose comment about an interview with a hostile, defensive Friedman--"Why is this clown so angry?"--resonated with the filmmakers.
As the project`s editor, native Baltimorean Richard Hankin, explains, researching David Friedman`s background, once in the filmmakers` minds to do so, was as easy as entering his name and hometown into Newsday`s search engine. There they discovered that his brother and father were accused and convicted of child sexual abuse in the late `80s.
The decision to shift fully into Movie B came soon after. For reasons of their own, the Friedman family, pariahs in their community, agreed to cooperate with the filmmakers, presumably to help create at least a sliver of doubt in a case that most people had long ago closed their minds about. The emergence of the Friedmans` home movies, which document the most intimate moments of a family beset by shame and scandal, came later, through the mediation of reporter Debbie Nathan. Watching the first tape, Hankin says, "I think our jaws did drop open, because it was unlike anything we had ever seen--the nakedness and rawness of it. We knew at that moment that this was extremely important footage to get a hold of."
More footage trickled in, including David Friedman`s painfully intimate "video diary" and a tape of a Friedman family Seder. The minute or two of the Seder tape that appears in the film feels like a long, sad night`s journey. "Try watching it in real time," Hankin says.
Capturing the Friedmans appearance at the Maryland Film Festival in early May, on the heels of its Sundance debut a few weeks prior, was only the second public venue for the film. On the morning after the first Baltimore screening, Jarecki and Hankin spoke of the movie`s impending screenings before the Long Island law-enforcement community, who don`t always come off well in Capturing the Friedmans, and in Great Neck itself. Jarecki was prepared for the kind of reaction he encountered from a woman at Sundance, who complained that the movie had some particulars of the case wrong (it turned out she was wrong) and was unfair to David Friedman`s mother, Elaine (who, Jarecki says, is pleased with how she`s portrayed). That the woman declined to allow in, let alone process, any information that didn`t align with her preconceptions relates significantly to a movie that investigates memory and the elusiveness of truth.

Arbeitstitel: "Berlin Friedman chicken".

Mafia Strukturen in allen Ländern des ehemaligen Ostblocks. Nimmer endende Milliardenzahlungen. Dann noch das Füllhorn aus der EG.
Geht man da gezielt vor?
Geht man da gezielt vor?
The Friedmans are a seemingly typical, upper-middle-class Jewish family
whose world is instantly transformed when the father and his youngest son
are arrested and charged with shocking and horrible crimes. Caught up in
hysteria and with their community in an uproar, the family undergoes a
media onslaught. The film inquires not just into the life of a family
but into a community, a legal system, and an era.
